Infertility and Acupuncture
Until recently, infertility treatments consisted mainly of medical solutions. Over the years, though, treatment for infertility has expanded to included non-traditional forms of therapy. Along with mind/body classes and yoga exercises, acupuncture for infertility has shown to be very helpful for numerous couples.
Acupuncture has been used alone to treat different types of infertility problems as well as in combination with medical forms of treatment, like IVF, for both men and women. Although it is not entirely understood just how acupuncture works, it is believed that the therapy helps to increase blood flow to the reproductive organs. This in turn improves ovarian function in women and sperm production in men. In fact, a recent study showed that men who received twice weekly acupuncture treatments for five weeks had significantly less structural abnormalities with their sperm compared to men who had no acupuncture treatments.
Studies have also shown acupuncture to be a helpful form of treatment when used in combination with medical treatments. In particular, several studies have found that women who receive acupuncture while undergoing in vitro fertilization are more likely to conceive and less likely to miscarry or have an ectopic pregnancy. With such positive results, its no wonder that the Fertility Centers of Illinois has teamed up with Pulling Down the Moon, a holistic center dedicated to helping people with fertility problems, in order to offer this service to their clients. Additionally, the Fertility Centers of Illinois regularly offer free fertility seminars where you can learn about acupuncture techniques as well as other natural fertility treatments.
