9 mo - table food?

My lo is 9 mo and has 6 teeth already, cutting her 7th now. Anyway, we have tried the Gerber Air Puff things and she loves them, tried bitter biscuits already and she loves them. Do you think it is too early to start trying table food now? If not, what to try first? I did this a very long time ago and do not remember when my ds started with table food. Please take into consideration we have tried every single baby food already and she has been eating baby food for about 5 mo now and cereal for 7 mo (per doctor so please don't lecture me). Any advise on when you started would be great.

I forgot to mention we have tried the inside of grapes, french fries, and a few other SOFT foods, and she did great on them.

Hi sfrog. My dd will be 10 months tomorrow, and we started her on finger foods at 7 months. After a few weeks of cheerios and bananas, she decided she wouldn't take a spoon anymore. So by about 8 months she was eating all table food, and by 8 1/2 or 9 she was eating whatever we eat, pretty much. I just give her pretty small pieces and she does fine. It sounds like your dd is doing really well with food, and should be fine with new things. Some big hits here are mac & cheese (Annie's is whole wheat and organic), toast, any kind of fruit but especially banana and baked apple, and cheese. Oh and any kind of meat that's soft enough for her - chicken, ground turkey or beef... Good luck!

I homemade all my dds food, so it all transfered to table food pretty quick. I'd say by 8 months she was eating most of what I made for dinners and such.

Quick question regarding this, when you all started your lo's on table food did they all already have teeth?

I've been wondering the same thing myself. My daughter is 8.5 months and is really good at chewing now. (she has 6 teeth, but really they use the back of their gums to chew anyways) She is increasingly not wanting baby food and jsut wants what we're having...The problem is it takes FOREVER for her to eat and gets bored of eating before she's full..so I"m finding I have to feed her 4-5 mini meals instead of just three. I'm also worried abotu nutrition becuase there is so much nutrition packed into the organic baby food I buy...I guess this means I finally have to become a good cook! : )

I let my LO eat some of my food, she is 9 mos. I've let her try french fries and mashed potatoes, a little rice, any kind of cooked vegetables or soft fruits that I can break up into small bits. Little bits of chicken and beef too and she has no teeth, but she is very good at chewing with her gums lol. I think as long as you stay away from too much dairy and the food is small enough to go down incase she decides not to swallow than there shouldn't be a problem. My 2 oldest were between 9-11 mos. when they stopped eating baby food and ate just regular food. My lo now loves the 8 mos+ babyfood with all the chunky veggies and stuff in it. She won't eat the begginner food anymore, so it won't be long for her either. Oh, and you could also try the toddler foods that they have too.

My DD didn't get teeth til after 10 months. She was an awesome chewer. Really ask a mom who breastfed and got bit or chewed before the little one got teeth, their gums are very tough. It would make my eyes water! Just make sure the peices are small enough for your littles comfort and can be "mushed."

Thanks for all your help. We have now started trying new things and all is going well. She had chicken nugget cut up very small last night and loved it.

My son just started getting his teeth almost a month ago. he now has too but he's been eating table food for longer. He loves cottage cheese! and graham crackers. Mac and cheese. chicken (shredded) cheese. yogurt. steamed veggies, and fruit I can't think of what else he eats but they really don't need teeth as long as it's soft enough. Just try new things and watch them carefully. you'd be surprised at what they can eat!

Hey sfrog! So my dd is the EXACT same age as yours and she has about 1/2 of a tooth! She's been eating cereal and baby foods since 4 months (she has reflux and the solids really help her) and we've just begun to explore table foods. I feed her Earth's Best baby food and all the little puffy snacky foods, but now I also try to cut up little things because she just really enjoys feeding herself. I make waffles and homemade strawberry jam and cut them up really small and with the jam it makes the waffle kinda soggy so it goes down well. Also, scrambled eggs. Anything from the food processor. Tonight I took the pasta and grilled chicken I fed the family and put it in the food processor and Ava totally loved it. I also made finger jello and handed her some and I don't know how much she ate but she totally enjoyed playing with it!!! She bathes nightly in the kitchen sink since she's started feeding herself but she enjoys mealtime. Good luck!!!

I think it is actually better to start table food earlier rather than have your lo eat baby food for a long time. One book I read by registered dietician says that you never really need baby food--just mash up softer table food so there are more textures. My first ds took jarred baby food for a long time and my second only took it for a short time before going right to table food. Now my second is such a better eater and I wonder if it is because my first was so used to a really mashy texture.

Sorry I did not exactly answer your question--I would say I started my second son on table food at about that age and it worked really well for him!

Thanks for all the responses. We have since started table foods and let me tell you she is a champ. She just chews away and eats everything I give her. (We stick to the softer foods of course), but daycare says she is eating everything there too and loving it, so we have pretty much come off of the baby food all together now.

Gloria: If I am not mistaking you are the one that had Ava the same day as I had Alexis. 9/3/07

My kids go straight to table food. You are fine. Stay away from the fires and butter and grease. Anything else-just watch your lo, and do small bites. GL!

BTW-no, they did not have all their teeth-just front teeth. Babies tend to do well at gumming thier food though.

Hello, my daughter is 10 months at is eating shells and cheese for the first time, as I type! She has 6 teeth. I give her the puffs and biter biscuits and bread. I still get nervous on what to give her and when and I have two other children already!!! I am still not sure if I should try cheerios and other crunchier foods yet, but she doesn't like her baby food and cereal much, never really has. She has been eyeing up our "big people" food since she got her first two teeth at 4 months! I have been giving her softer table foods so far. I gave her cut up bananas, but she couldn't quite pick them up, they are so slimy when they are cut up! I think peas would also be a good thing to try, even though they are small, they can still pick them up and gum them or chew them, peas are pretty mushy. Even if they start to gag a bit on them, they go down same as noodles. I haven't tried hot dogs yet, but I may try them without the skins. Not the healthiest, but it is good practive for them!
