Hi, I recently found out that I am pregnant. I was using Klaron lotion (sodium sulfacetamide) for the 1st month and have been reading that it can cause birth defects. Yikes! Has anyone had experience with being pregnant and using this ↓
I know some acne medications that are taken orally can cause serious birth defects, but your doctor makes sure you aren't pregnant first and puts you on birth control. If it's a topical solution I'm assuming the risks are much, much lower, especially if you discontinue using it. Call your doctor and ask. Even if you have only set up your first appointment and havent actually gone in yet, they'll be more than happy to answer your questions and it'll ease your mind. I work in the cosmetics department at Walgreens and you can try something like Acne Free. Its just like Proactiv and you can get it there or at Walmart and it works pretty well. ↑
I took Accutane 7 months ago, and they test you every month by blood for pregnancy. That is the serious one that causes birth defects. If they don't do tests every month I would guess it is not as severe as Accutane but I would still talk to your dr.. But I did find some information and all the infromation talks about sodium sulfacetamide causing birth defects when taken orally. The most common side effect scene was a cleft palate (which is really easily corrected so it is not like Accutane which causes 3 eyes), but again that is taken orally. Here is what I read on when it is taken as a lotion on the skin..............Because topical sulfacetamide has never been specifically studied to determine its potential teratogenic risk, one cannot definitively conclude that it does not cause birth defects. However, because it is topical and, for the most part, sulfonamides as a class do not appear to significantly increase the risk for birth defects, it is unlikely that topical sulfacetamide causes a significantly increased risk for malformations............ I hope this comforts you and does not cause you more panic. ↑
Hi, thanks for the info. I went to the doctor last week and she practically laughed at me when I told her my fears about this drug. She said everything should be fine because not much is absorbed in the blood stream. I was really worried because of what I had read online. However, I am going in for a level 2 sonogram Jan. 28th and she told me that they will be able to see more at this point. I am ready for that day to come already.... ↑
