I went to the dr on Wed. for my first U/S and they saw two sacs but only one had a fetal pole and what we thought was a heartbeat. The other looked empty. I only measured at 5 wks 6 days with one and 5 wks 5 days with the empty one. I go back for another U/S on May 9th. Could there be two and the other one just didn't show yet???

I had my first u/s at 9 weeks and the tech only detected one fetus. Then at my 13 wk appt doppler couldn't pick up a heartbeat so we did a quickie u/s in the clinic just witht he NP to see the heartbeat. A very clear fetus popped up immediatley and she printed a pic for me to take home. I didn't think anything of it but EVERYONE sees a second fetus in the picture and it is driving me NUTS! Granted the NP wasn't looking for two, but surely it couldn't have been missed by both her and the tech. Someone has told me that what looks like the hand of the 2nd baby is probably just a cross section of cord...but it has 5 "fingers". It really is enough to make you grind your teeth.

I had an us recently and for some reason above the babys head you can clearly see ribs and spine but the doctor has not told me that im having twins and im very confused

I just found out we are having twins a few days ago. At the first u/s 6w4d we could only see 1, but when I went back at 10w6d there was obviously 2 there jumping around like acrobats. :)

im 27 weeks pregnant and i had my first and last u/s at about 18 weeks and the technician saw only one baby, but i'm going crazy because everything in my heart is telling me that i'm having twins. i'm bigger now than i was at the ninth month of my last pregnancy. should i just listen to the doctors telling me that this is normal or should i get a second opinion?

In response to Christina... I see you haven't posted in a couple of weeks and were having problems, I wish I would've seen your response sooner so I could've responded. I just had a d&c on April 1st, becasue I had two sacs - one of which was totally empty and the other had just a yolk sac and was starting to lose it's shape. My hcg levels were super high (90,000 when I was about 7 weeks) and then started to drop, but at first the doc thought it was just because one twin wasn't making it. The u/s doc and my ob both said after a second u/s that it didn't look like anything was going to be happening with them so we went ahead and removed them. I never bled or anything, so it was hard to let go. My ob was hesitant to do the surgery when he saw how unsure I was in the operating room. But I figured they know what they're looking at so we went ahead with it.
I hope everything is well with you.

I had a very early ultrasound (a bit before 6 wks) that showed just one sac. I specifically asked the sonographer if twins was a possibility (runs on my husband's side of family). She said, "I only see one here, unless something's hiding." And then she laughed. Never thought of it again. Spent the three months vomitting constantly and so sick I could barely stand it. Now, I'm better (17 wks) and for some reason can't get the twins thing out of my mind. I keep feeling the baby move on BOTH sides of my uterus simultaneously. So either my baby is an acrobat, or something else is going on. Second u/s in a few weeks, but isn't it torture not knowing these things for sure??? I wish we could open up our tum-tums and peek inside!

I've noticed that many of you have many questions as to whether you are having twins or not, but mainly because I see that your scans are only every few months and therefore you have to wait and see if your "one sac" is actually 2. I was very lucky and had a scan every single month and therefore knew everything about what was happening inside me. If I was concerned half way through a month I would pop into the dr and he would do another scan just to make sure all was ok. I guess I was very lucky. It made me stress less, that's for sure

To Tasha: no question is stupid when it comes to being pregnant! I don't think that twelve weeks is to long for a first appointment.

I was told by everyone close to me that my larger than normal belly size and overexaggerated symptoms meant twins. When my dr measured my uterus 6 weeks ahead of schedule, she too thought of twins, and I had an us at 18 weeks. Only one sac, but I am still larger, and at 28 weeks appear to be full term (this is my 4th pregnancy, so I know how big I usually get) How do I get my dr to order another ultrasound without thinking I am crazy? I would love for there to be two babies since this is my last pregnancy.

I just had my 5 week ultrasound done. They found two sacks but only one baby, the other sack was empty and they said its possible it was a multiple birth but one was miscarried already. I'm still waiting on the doctor to get back to me about what's really going on. I'm really excited to know if I am having twins.

I had an us today the doctor says I'm 6wks along, my hcg levels were off the charts, I look like I'm 5 months pregnant and they only detected one sac. Is it possible that there is more than one?? any similar stories??

Has anyone experienced an undetected twin in an early u/s at 6 weeks?(u/s due to high hcg level) if so how far along were you before the twin was detected?

I have aquestion also. I just had an u/s and I was 7w 5 d pregnant. There was one sac and we saw the baby and heartbeat. My doc did the measurements then printed me out a oic. This pic however, looks like 2 babies. I saw what might be the second(head) when he was measuring the baby and I asked, but he said it looks to be a yolk sac. When he printed out the pic thpugh, it appears to have a body also, just lying in a differnet position.. He wants me to wait until my next appt to check again. I am so confused. This will be my sixth baby(maybe seventh, if it is twins)., and I really need to know as I am moving and need to make sure I buy a big enough house. I will email the pic to any experienced person who can help me, just let me know. Please help!!!! Thanks!

Just had my 1st u/s at 6 wks 6 days. Saw two sacs but one is smaller. Does anyone think the smaller one could still be viable?

I had my first ultrasound at 5 weeks and they saw just one. Then at 6 weeks they did another ultrasound and there were two little heartbeats!

Hi djcoursen. When you did your first U/S at 5.5 weeks, was it a vaginal U/S or the normal one?I also have the same situaltion. My hcg level was too high and I got a vaginal U/S done and they could see just one sac. So I was wondering if a vaginal U/S can actually miss another sac.Anybody in the same situation as I am in?

Hello there. In the past, I had a multiple pregnancy that went undetected until I was 19wks with an extremely high AFP reading. I had three ultrasounds in the beginning of my pregnancy, and only one sac was detected and only one heartbeat. I don't have twins in my family, and high HCG levels were there, but no one suspected twins. I was so surprised to learn I was carrying fraternal twins when I was 19 wks. I thought that my baby had a neorological problem, and was shocked and relieved to find out that I was having twins!
Anything can happen!
I now have healthy twins (boy and girl) who will be four yrs old on August 13.

Good luck to you!

It has! I am now 28 weeks pregnant with twins!! My first u/s only was one heart beat and one sac shown. Now... The u/s tech was kind of befuddled that there were 2 heart beats!

Dont feel so bad. I had my u/s at 9 weeks and everything looked normal and looks as if there is only one baby and no indication that there is another one. I was hoping for twins too. Just the idea of it seemed so perfect. I go again next week and still hold some hope that maybe a second one will pop up some time that had no been detected or something but I know its not there.

I have a ?! I went yesterday, and the OB found a sac, but it was empty. He rolled over to the right, and there was another sac, that took a little longer to see, but there was a baby in the 2nd one, with a heartbeat. I asked him what the 1st sac was, and he said it might have been my uterus, but his first response was........there's the sac! It looked identical to the 2nd sac. i'm 7 wks along, and also have a tilted uterus, which he said might cause us not to see that well....plus, his u/s machine was an older model. I go back when i'm 11 wks along. Will i be able to see more about the 1st sac? Does sometimes another baby won't show up until later? I'm really wondering. I've been more exhausted that goes way beyond being tired. I'm wondering if we'll see another baby in the 1st sac, with the next visit!!

my twins (triplets actually but one died week 12) were detected by ultrasound at my first appt, at 7 weeks. My aunt, however, went right up to delivery with her identical girls before someone figured out there was another baby in there after all. Her girls are now 18 years old, but she did have one ultrasound that showed only one baby... can't remember how far along she was at that ultrasound. She was getting big, but because she is so short and tiny, they attributed her larger than normal belly size to her being small. Ha. Surprise!

Hi I was reading some peoples response, and some had a ultrasound at like 5 weeks and only saw one baby. Then another at like 18-20 weeks and found another! But in between that time didn't they listen to the heartbeats at doctor visits? because I believe I am pregnant with twins but my 4 week u/s showed just one but i say otherwise. Now I'm 13 weeks and we've listened to the heartbeat w/out an u/s and still only one. And people tell me around this time they would be able to hear the second one on the doppler is that true? Or could they still be missing it? Any help would be great thanx

I have the same feeling!, just had an ultrasound, was told only one... yet I feel more then one! dreams and instinct tell me more. I think there may be a baby hiding behind another that doctors dont see. Mothers I believe know more!
