Thanks Kathy. I've heard about vanishing twin syndrome, but I've also read several instances of only seeing one baby during the first u/s and then finding a second baby in the next u/s. There are several examples of that in this particular string. I have been much sicker with this pregnancy compared to my previous two and twins run in my husband’s family and my grandmother was a triplet. My concern mainly comes from the technician that was performing my u/s when she saw the second yolk sack she moved away quickly and did not seem to search. I am going back a week from today for another u/s with the doc and will certainly be asking more questions. ↑
yea, maybe there would be a chance of it not being vanishing twin syndrome if you aren't as far as you thought. But, for 8 weeks.... you should definitley see a fetal pole with a heartbeat, without looking hard at all. You have the extra symptoms because of the extra hormones from having 2 sacs. Regardless of one or two fetal poles. I suppose you never know if the second implanted, but it doesn't sound likely to blame it on the tech. She probably pulled away quick because she didn't want you to hurt by what you seen. I guess the only way to know for sure is to see in your next ultrasound. Good luck on that! ↑
my wife was in and they saw two at her 7 week appointment and when we went back it was just one. sometime even with a high HCG level this happen, because a stem does not take much to show ↑
Hi! I am 7 weeks pregnant with my 4th child. With my other 3 children, I always measured small for dates. At my 6 week exam, my uterus measured 12-13 weeks but the baby only measure 6 weeks at ultrasound. The tech had a VERY hard time even finding the one baby. They also found no fibroids though. The doctor said he didn't know why...we would just wait and see. How common is it to miss twins at a 6 week ultrasound? Thanks! ↑
If your uterus measured 12-13 weeks, then you would see the one very easily... so, it doesn't seem like the gestational sac or twins... maybe your uterus is larger because you are producing my progesterone this time, or because it is your 4th pregnancy. My mom measured very small on her first pregnancy and slightly small on her next 2. Then with me (the 4th kid and the youngest of the 4), her uterus measured very large also. The dr. said that it could just be from having been pregnant before, but there was only one of me. I suppose I could have had a twin and that twin didn't make it... but, the technology then wasn't as hightech like today, so we will never know. At 6 weeks you should see the gestational sac or sacs. But, it is still a little early, so you just have to wait until your next scan. Has your dr. taken your HCG levels also? Are they doubling every 2 days?? ↑
I was running large for my pg and the doc thought it was because I have been pg 5 other times. The first 2 u/s I had detected only one baby (one done at 6 weeks and one at 7 weeks) At the 7 week I asked them to look around good and make sure there was only one. They saw nothing unusual. I had my 3rd u/s done at 12 weeks due to some spotting I was having...and that's when they found the second baby. It was hiding right behind the first, laying the same way and the sacs even lined up with each other. This surprised my doc as my beta levels when checked at 6 weeks...barely doubled. They were worried about possible blighted ovum at first....and then turns out in the end there were 2 babies even. So far so good...I am 28 weeks 1 day today and they are doing fine. I have been told I have a tiltled uterus before and that alone can make it more difficult to see some areas of your uterus well. For my 7 week u/s they used both the u/s wand internally and the hand held external u/s and weren't able to see the second baby. So it can happen. 13 weeks for a 6 week gestational age is awfully large for just uterus size. I agree, just wait and see. Things will get clearer to define in the next couple of months. Request a follow up u/s before your 20 week if your doc doesn't automatically send you for one. Around 12-14 weeks is good and they are able to see alot more. Your doc will be able to get authorization for additional u/s just because you are measuring large...just in case you are told insurance is a problem with extra monitoring. Many insurance companies will only cover a certain number of ultrasounds during a pg unless your dr needs it for diagnosis of a potential problem. I hope everything goes well for you! Post back whatever they find out, ok? ↑
I just had an ultrasound and measured 4wk 6d, we saw one gestational sac and a yolk sac. Twins are in my family, and I am a twin myself, do I still have a chance of maybe seeing a second baby? Does anyone know the statistics of missed multiples on an early ultrasound? I've tried to look up on the web how often it may happen, but can't find anything. ↑
If you see one sac, you should just be happy for one baby. Every woman thinks the possibility of twins, but if you keep dwelling on it, then your only opening yourself for a let down if its only one. More likely it is only one. Just be happy with that. Take it from someone that is also a twin herself and has 4 sets of twin cousins, none with fertility drugs... that has lost 4 pregnancies and one with twins. They seen it on the first scan though and lost that twin early and the second twin lost a few weeks later because of the first one left the uterus bad. Thank God that its one baby, that alone is a blessing. I ended up having that one baby after all the loses and he alone is a gift from God. Not saying 2 isn't... but, if you see only one then believe that it is one. If you later see 2, then be more the blessing... just don't dwell on it. ↑
You know, I think it’s really sad that there are so many people out there who just like to try and lecture others. Amanda, it sounds like there’s probably only one, BUT it’s too early to tell anything. From reading some of the other posts it’s not impossible. Good luck! ↑
Hey hey.. whats the hostility... who's doing the lecture? I think most the woman (or men, as I see a mike).. are just giving advice. I think JessicaAnn is just trying to say that if your hopes are too high for twins then that may open yourself up for a let down if its only one. __Anyhow__ there is always hope, and always a possibility. Give it time for it may be too early and just pray that the baby is healthy!! :) regardless of how many. ↑
Hey, the stats I found of twins being missed is 5% in the first tri. You DID have your scan very early so anything is possible, epsecially given your family history. Usually when twins are missed the sacs are the exact same size and shape and right in front of each other, one blocking the other OR twins sharing the same sac. BUT....it is still pretty rare. Good Luck. ↑
I had a scan at 6w5days and there was one clear baby - we were so thrilled and delighted. I went along for my 12 week dating scan with fingers crossed that all was well and the baby had grown as expected. Only to be told that there were two - we were expecting twins! So it can happen, although the sonographer couldnt believe that it had been missed at the first scan. My girls are now 7 months old and fab. ↑
I had an early scan at 4 wks 3 days that only showed 1 sac. One week later I had another u/s that showed 3 sacs. If the scan is very the u/s tech or doc may miss a sac, but it's unlikely. ↑
A lady on one of the ivillage expecting boards had several sonos, a couple which were 3D and she JUST had twins diagnosed at almost 27 weeks. Amazing, I guess she fell into the 1% that pp were reporting...hey it does happen. ↑
Hey, it does happen (very rarely, but it does).. and be greatful if it does. Just don't expect twins from the beginning after they only see one, just to get sad if its not. If you later find out its more then 1.. then thats just double the blessing. :) OR triple..hehe. I deal with woman all the time having multiple miscarriages and what they would do to just have one healthy baby. Just like others have said, thank God every day for the blessing inside you, no matter how many it is. :) ↑
Who is sitting around hoping for twins? Not me. All of these message boards are the same. Someone asks a logical, medical question and then there are these mothers of twins that want to tell everyone "just be happy for what you have" How about an answer to the questions every now and then, instead of the lectures. All I wanted to know is why my uterus measured 13 weeks and my baby only measured 6. Seems strange to me. I would be extremely happy if it were only one, in fact, I would be sad if it were twins. So, to the few of you that jump around to all these multiples boards giving out lectures....just save it and get off your high horses already! And to those who actually answer questions, THANK YOU! ↑
there are TONS of reason your uterus can be measuring big. Excessive fluids, your pg being close together, lots of pg, fibroids, scarring....or sometimes NO reason at all.
Multiples is just one reason, and I have seen more people NOT be pg with twins when measuring big than NOT. Many moms of multipels don't get big until 12-14 weeks. At 6 wks your baby is the size of a grain of rice...two babies aren't going to make your uterus any bigger than a singleton. ↑
to Shauna, I guess most of the ladies with twins are tired of the questions over and over from ladies who want us to tell it is twins. We don't know. We also cringe when people insist that the sono must have missed one because of a feeling or symptoms. 6wks sono misses twins about 5% of the time. Yes it may be twins, but not likely. ↑
You complain about woman just giving helping advice YET you want medical attention. GO TO YOUR DOCTOR!!!! Gee, this board can't tell you why your uterus is measuring big. Nor were the ladies even talking about your questions, so why you jumping to their responses!? Once again.. want medical attention and advice... SEEK YOUR DOCTOR!! ↑
Most likely, your uterus is larger due to your previous pregnancies. After our third child, my uterus was near my belly button at 12 weeks! It could also be excessive fluid or uterine fibroids that can sometimes grow without symptoms as they feed on the extra estrogen due to pregnancy. If you had a scan at 6 weeks, I highly doubt it's multiples. ↑
If your own DOCTOR doesn't know why your uterus is measuring large, WHY would anyone here know? I agree with the previous poster who said that the twin moms here are tired of women who come here wanting us to tell others that they're expecting twins, too. There are two ways to know for sure: a conclusive ultrasound and BIRTH! Geesh! ↑
REALLY??? I doubt the most common reason is because multiples. If you ahve ever been on any expecting board there is a large number of ladies who are measuring big and very few are pg with more than one baby. Where did you get your info? It is true that moms of multiples will measure big tipping off the doc to do any early sono, BUT....the opposite isn't true...that multiples is why ppl measure big. ↑
I was just reading all these post and cant help but to tell you my story. I have been pregnant 3 times. First 2 were of twins (also with no drugs) and last pregnancy was a single. I have 5 beautiful children. I just wanted to add that the first pregnant with twins, I wasn't measureing any larger than a normal pregnancy until like about maybe my 11 week visit. Even then, it was hardly more. Never thought twins until my first scan picked up 2 sacs right away. My second was about the same. My third baby, the single, I actually measured slightly bigger than the first 2. We thought twins again, but then it was only one. Honestly, you can't really go by the size of the uterus in the very beginning. Especially if you've been pregnant before. I measured below a single in the first twins, and more than my twins in my single. Best advice is to go by the ultrasound. They picked up my first twins at about 7 weeks on the first scan.. then the second pregnancy they picked it up real early like only a couple weeks after ovulation. 2 tiny sacs on the screen. They showed up right away also. The third pregnacy (the single).. only showed one sac, the dr. said that it could be twins again knowing my history, but was convinced that since she couldn't see another sac or yolk sac in the one, that its going to be a single. I thought twins again (especially since I was measuring larger then the first 2).. but nope. Ultrasound was perfectly correct. Only one!! The u/s equipment now a days are so advanced that its real unlikely to miss twins. Maybe if you use a real old machine and have a bad bad tech.. but, even then.. its still rare. Not unlikely, just rare. ↑
