Think of the uterus like a balloon. The first time you try to blow up the balloon, it takes awhile and a lot more air to even get it started. After you have blown it up a couple of times and it is all stretched out, it doesn't take much effort or air to get it to a large size much faster. That is how I was told. ↑
I posted about having a scan at 6.5 weeks where there was only one baby and then at the 12 week dating scan there were twins...(see aboue)
well I didnt feel more than nauseated, I didnt put on any weight until after the first three months and you couldnt even tell I was pregnant until I was about 4.5 months. So I hadnt even thought about having a multilpe birth...mind you it was my first pregnancy and now my stomach muscles aint what they used to me! ↑
Congrats!!.. I also didn't put on any weight but maybe only a couple pounds total up to about 18 weeks with the twins. They are totally healthy and never had any major problems. Also, no one knew I was pregnant up until about 5 months also. lol.. I think that every womans body and every pregnancy is different. Regardless of twins or single. Heck, my friend did IVF with 3 and they all took... she was also about my size and didn't show until a few months and that was with 3. Its really hard to go by the very beginning. I mean, the size of the fetus is soooo small that even 2 isn't going to make much of a difference that early. ↑
Hey I went to the doctor today, and they told me that there were two sacs. I'm 6 weeks preg. but only one heartbeat, they say it may be a vanishing twin. I go back next friday. Wish me luck, say a prayer for me. ↑
i am in a similar situation and am just curious to know if anyone else has a more exact scenario to mine. I am pregnant with my sixth child. My last pregnancy started out as twins and I lost one at 10 wks. This pregnancy has begun very severly. I have been experiencing all day nausea, a protruding belly already and am only beginning my 8th week, very sore breasts and severe gas and abdominal cramping. I had slight pink discharge at 4 weeks but no blood. At 5 weeks the Dr saw an empty uterus. I had a little brown spotting following my exam but still no real blood. He had me go for HCG level testing 48 hours apart. The first showed 36,000 at 5 weeks, then 48 hrs later just about 37,000. He stated that although my levels were a little high they were not in twin range for 5 weeks. He repeated the vaginal ultrasound and this time saw one baby measuring 6 weeks and 4 days and a normal beating heart. I do not know why, but I have this strange feeling that he missed one baby- especially since he missed the first one all together the first time. I know it could be because I was so early in pregnancy but I just feel like I am six or seven months pregnant. Extreme fatigue, hunger, moodiness and large belly (I am normally a very tiny person). I hope that all realize that this is just a discussion board and we expectant mothers enjoy it as a way of communicating about things we may or may not have in common and to sometimes just make us feel better to know someone out there is going through a similar experience. Those who lash out at others for mere chatting or lecturing must just have their hormones in an uproar. I happen to rather enjoy other moms' comments and/or lectures just the same. LOL Michele ↑
Hi Michele! Your sixth pregnancy!!? My word, you must have the patients of a saint!:) As far as I know, HCG levels should actually double every 48-72hrs. No matter how high or low they are is not a valid indication for multiples. Exagerated symptoms are also not an indication. Some ladies on this forum had less symptoms with their multiples than with their singleton pregnancy. Also with every pregnancy a woman goes through, she shows earlier. So with this being your sixth, it would make sence that you would show quite early. All this being said, I am now 21wks along with twins & my nausea, headaches have been terrible since the begining. I didn't start measuring larger until I was over 12wks along. Keep in mind that every woman is different & every pregnancy is different. The only sure way to tell how many babies you're carrying is by u/s. Was your u/s internal or external? An internal will show more earlier on. Congrats on the new addition to your family! Keep us posted! ↑
We have a similar question....
We had two ultrasounds in the same day. One measured the baby at 6 weeks 1 day, the other measured at 5 weeks 4 days. Both appear to be taken at different angles. There are twins in my family. Could it be twins? Could this be a difference in machines? Blood pressure has been high, the onset of symptoms was very early. Any feedback would be very helpful. Thanks. ↑
Hello ladies. I am new here. I went for an U/S a few weeks ago and was told that I was 5w6d and they could not see anything inside. I went back a week later to find out I had a blighted ovum (again). I had a D&C the next day (03/21). Anyway ever since then, I have still been feeling pregnant, so I called my doctor and he ordered another HCG. Turn to find out my levels were still high; therefore, he ordered another U/S. I had that on Friday (03/31) and it was showing a sac (no heartbeat/blighted). Could it be that this sac went undetected during the other two U/Ss I had? Twins maybe?? I noticed during my first two scans that the tech was probing around in one area and in the third one (yesterday), he was probing a different area. Can anybody advise on this? When I spoke to my doctor I was in shock (have to have another D&C next week) and, therefore, didnt even think to ask him if I had twins. I'll check with him on Monday about it though.
I also miscarried in January 2006, and I dont know since I got pregnant so soon after if that's the reason why I miscarried. ↑
I had an u/s at 6 wks 3 days, according to the tech I only had one fetus, however, when I look at the pic it looks like two, she said it's the head and the body, but this is my third pregnancy and I am experiencing horrible morning sickness which I did have the first two times. I have family history of twins, could I have twins and the tech not noticed? ↑
I had an ultrasound on friday and there were 2 sacs and 1 embryo and heartbeat. The tech said the second sac could be a bleed wich is normal or could have been a twin but its empty now. I just got a call from my ob she wants me to go in for a second ultrasound to see if the second sac shows an embryo this time. Is this possible? Could I be pregnant with twins? ↑
okay so here is my situation if anyone can give me insight. i thought i was almost 9 weeks according to my lmp. i had an ultrasound the other day and the doctor saw one baby, yolk and one sac. to my husband and myslef it looked like there was another sac. it was a lighter shade like it was hidden or farther back. can this show that in an ultrasound or is it just one deminsional and that he is right. he also wasn't very straight forward he had a problem getting the new ultrasound machine to work right so he switched us to an old one. he then said i have 3 cysts on my right ovary. i know this is sort of stupid but could these cysts hide a second since there are 3 and two were quite large. almost the size of the fetus. i'm just trying to figure out my husband and i don't care either way we just want the baby to be heathly. we are quite worried about the cysts. ↑

I had an ultrasound at 4wks related to spotting. We found 1 fetus, but it was too early to see anything. I was spotting 1.5wks later, went in for another ultrasound, and they found a second yolk sac! My concern: the second yolk sac had a large blood clot in it. We were able to see a strong heartbeat from the first baby, but the blood clot was obstructing the view of the second fetus. I'm going back this Friday for another ultrasound. Ever happen to anyone else? ↑
Just went in for 9wk u/s. saw only one fetus. u/s was extremely clear. my dr. did not tell me my HcG levels, just ordered the u/s right away which is odd for my Dr. Has anyone had undetected twin on very clear u/s? also sac was very odd shaped...was squared off on one side. happen to anyone else? ↑
i origianly thought i was 10 wks pregnant, due to what i thought my last period was.... but had my first u/s today, and was told the baby is measuring to be 7 1/2 weeks.... i know i was exactly sure of when my last period was but im pretty sure im farther then 7 1/2 weeks at least 9 or 10...... i saw one sak, one baby, one heartbeat.... i have this feeling... its twins... this is my first pregnancy, but ive been very sick, and boobs are very very sore.... hoping one baby may be hiding? im very happy with one, but have had twins in my mind so long now, i feel a little dissapointed.... could one be hiding? i see one sac very clearly, but nothing else... ? ↑
Hi there, I had an u/s at 6wks and it only showed one sac. Then my next u/s at 20wks showed two identical boys and they share a placenta. I guess they can fool the technologists at such an early stage. the only other indications were a high hormone levels on the maternal alfa fetal serum tests. Good luck with your pregnancy! ↑
I have a question...I had my first u/s at 5 wks and they saw two sacs and i just had a second u/s at 8wks and they saw two sacs one with a heart beat and the other appered to be empty is there any way that they could not see the seconded one because it was vaginal u/s? ↑
I'm sorry to say it, but my understanding is that a vaginal u/s is much more accurate than an abdominal. The heartbeats of both my twins was clearly visible & they could be heard at 7wks by reg. u/s. ↑
I just had my first U/S at 7 weeks and the doc only saw one fetus, but I feel like I am pregnant with twins. Is there any hope that I could still be pregnant with twins, but the doc just couldn't see them? Please respond, I need to know if there is any hope that I could still be pregnant with twins.
Thanks. ↑
mscott... 19 wks with my first pregnancy. I have a question about your abnormal levels.. Was it your triple screen? I just got my AFP levels back from my triple screen and their very high, There are twins in my husbands family so I'm wondering if I might be carrying two, I've already had two US one at 6 weeks and again at 14wks, but they were short and I feel I might see another baby in the second one... Very curious, and worried about my triple screen. If it's only one kid it must be a soccer player cause it never stops moving. I have a repeat US and biophysical booked for a week from now. Say a prayer.. ↑
hi i had first u/s at 6 weeks saw one sac with one baby and heartbeat, they also saw something else beside the sac (looked like a second sac to me) anyway the doc went away and come back and said it looks like i have a hematoma so come back for a repeat u/s a week later. a week later i went back and had a different doctor do the u/s he said it looks like i have 2 sacs one with a healthy baby with heartbeat in it and the other with nothing in it. i was exactly 7 weeks at this u/s he said we will no more when we scan you again at 12weeks. can someone tell me if this has happend and the other baby showed up?? just curious. i am so happy to have one baby thats got a heart beat as i had a missed miscarriage in october last year. just wanna knkow if this has happend to anyone and what the out come was. thanks ↑
I too just went to the doctor today (6weeks 3 days) The doctor found two clear yolk sacs but only one fetal pole with a heart beat. I have to go back in 3 days for a follow up. ↑
I am 18 weeks pregnant and two days ago I found two different heart rates while I was using a doppler at home. There was a clear difference in the spead. But today it was harder to find. I don't know if it usualor hard to find the heartbeats in twins??? For those who are pregnant with twins, do you always find the two heartrates right away? This is my second pregnancy, and my symptoms were so bad in the beginning that I tought I was having twins, but my 1 U/S only showed one. After reading throught this blog, I guess it is possible for them to miss one baby, so I am anxiously awaiting my 2 U/S in 12 days. My belly really has been popping out in the past 3 weeks, my friends can't believe the difference in such a short time. I have been feeling movements really high and low and farely early on.I think it could be, but I am also realistic that it probably isn't as well. But hey I'm curious still! If anyone is pregnant with twins and has an asnwer about finding the heartbeats, let me know! ↑
Im 16 weeks pregnant with twins. I had an ultrasound at 6 wks 5 days to check dates since I had no clue how far along I was. The tech saw two sacs (abdominal US) - one with baby with heartbeat, but the other took about a half an hour of searching (vaginal US)... it was really hiding! In fact the tech wouldnt answer my question "Is that a second baby?" until she FINALLY saw the babies heartbeat when she decided to try doing an abdominal US again.
I have a quick little ultrasound in my doctors office at each appt to see the heartbeats since its hard to be sure youre hearing them both on a doppler, but the US specialists are the ones who have the newest equipment. So I cant wait until May 10... when I will finally have the anotomy scan done. We will find out the sex (or sexes), and possibly whether they are sharing the placenta or not.
Since this wasnt a planned pregnancy (my husband and I thought we were done after 3 children) I wanted the sex to be a surprise, but I cant wait anymore! I work in a hospital... I wish I had the guts to ask a tech to take a quick peek! lol But I will be good and limit the US's to what is necessary. Good luck to all!!! ↑
I was 6 weeks when they saw two sacs but no heart beat, On 8th week ultrasound they found two heartbat. Check HCG levels it should rise fast if you have twins. Hope all is well for you take care, dont worry ↑
yes! i had 2 ultrasounds before they saw the second baby. i am having identical twins so they say the eggs sometimes takes longer to split. but i was 8 weeks before they noticed mine. my hcg levels were very high also and i gained a ton of weight! good luck! ↑
For those of you wondering if you might be carrying twins due to your belly size - the size your belly reaches can be closely related to your physical size. If you're a petite person, you're more likely to carry your baby very prominently, and may appear as if you're carrying two babies (or twelve!) whether you are or not. If you're tall, though, you may not get as large or grow as quickly. I have a friend who gets HUGE when she's pregnant (around 9 weeks she look like I do at 5 or 6 months!), but she's also very petite. Every time she's pregnant people try to convince her that it MUST be twins (especially since she's a twin herself!), but she has always had single babies. So just keep that in mind . :o) ↑
This happened to a very good friend of mine. She had her first u/s that showed one and didn't find out about her twins until she started to measure so large that they finally did another u/s. I think she was about 4 months along by then. ↑
