Bladder Infections and Antibiotics.. anyone???
Name: GD | Date: Sep 1st, 2005 9:14 PM
[ Original Post ]
I have a history of bladder infections or UTI's. Every time i go for my montly check i get to do the urine sample thing and well every single time came up with bacteria. My doctor always sends it for a culture which comes back negative.. since i don't have any symptoms i don't get any medication. This last time it turns out that there is an infection and i have been put on Microbid. I had taken this antibiotic before but i am so worried about anything happening to the baby that i don't want to take it.. i know i should because it is worse to leave it untreated but i would not forgive myself if something happened to the baby.. i did my research and i only found 1 case where it could have been coincidence but a woman was put on this antibiotic and she miscarried at 5 months.. Has anybody here been on this or any antibiotic for UTI's??

Yes I was put on amoxil at 8 weeks for a uti. I'm now 30 weeks and the baby is fine. My MIL had a uti and didn't treat it, it lead to a kidney infection, her being violently sick and miscarriage at 6 weeks so you should definately take the antibiotics. You'll be fine but you do need to take the antibiotics.

I was recently on macrobid for what I believed to be a UTI. The culture came back negative for typical bladder infection bacteria, but I had a large count of Strep B cultured. They had me continue the antibiotic course, in hopes of controlling the bacterial count for the Strep B, and even spoke of continuing treatment, should my next culture come back with a high bacterial count. Macrobid must be the antibiotic of choice in pregnant women, and I would wager that it is extremely safe. I have been off of the treatment for about 4 weeks, and go back for a check-up on the 12th. All is well though, and I am sure it is better to treat, than to end up with a kidney infection. I had one of these prior to getting pregnant, as I had an asymptomatic UTI, and I found myself in the hospital hooked up to IV antibiotics and fluids....noone wants this, in particular a pregnant women. Best of luck, and congratulations.

I am 24 weeks and I have had two UTI's since. I was put on Microbid one time. I seem to carry the bacteria. I was reluctant to take it, as well. But everything seems fine. Good luck.

PLEASE DON TAKE ANYMORE OF IT. the only drugs of antibiotics that are safe to take during pregnancy are amoxicillin and cephalexin. microbid is a double antibiotic of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim and both those drugs have not been found safe to take during pregnancy. of corse you may be fine taking the tablets as some people are, but as its not been medically assured i would advise you get a different prescription

My sister has had 2 children and both times she was pregnant her OB put her on macrobid and both of her little girls were and are perfectly fine. My sister was prone to them while she was pregnant. If you are really uncomfortable with taking it call and ask your local pharmacist for some reassurance. I am sure your physician would not put you on a medication that would be harmful to your baby. UTI's left untreated are very dangerous and Justine is right it will travel to your kidneys and you may actually start bleeding when you urinate, that is a symptom that you let it go too long without being treated and make sure that you take it for the full length of the perscription, bacteria grow really well in warmth so even if you start feeling fine and you no longer have any symptoms you may still have the bacteria...I know that sounds gross...but I hope this helps you.

I also wanted to tell you that Macrobid does NOT contain trimethoprim, which can cause birth defects. It contains
Nitrofurantoin, a good website to look at is drugs.com and look up Macrobid it actually has information on the drug from the PDR or physician's desk reference book.

I had a bladder infection that was found on August 22. The ER prescribed me Microbid and I was hesitant to take it. I had a doctors appt on the 23rd and asked my doctor and he said it was perfectly fine to take. 2 weeks later we are doing much better :)

i was on trimethoprim ( cant remember how to spell it) i was not well, heart rate shot up to 120, its always 75, i felt like crap for days, but the doc refused to prescribe me anything else, so i went with it for a while then gave up on them, luckily i didnt have a urine infection for long, but i wouldnt advise that, but when you have an infection, what choice do we have??

Wake up! Why would anyone take a chance & take any drugs while pregnant. There is no way to know what the effects may be present or future. My daughter is due with her first baby & suffers from UTI's. Her doctor scared her into taking microbid but she went off it after 5 weeks. She drinks lots of water & natural cranberry juice (no added sugar) What happened to good nutrition . I had three children & wouldn't take an aspirin while pregnant. Now everything is prescribed while pregnant, why not keep smoking & drinking too. Can't be any worse than pharmecuticals.
Let's get healthy & get off the meds.

I had to take two doses of antibiotics for UTI during my first trimester. It is very common and fine for the baby. Don't worry. I am now in my 8th month.

If a UTI is not treated it can become a kidney infection which is very serious. Antibiotics are only taken for ten days and they do clear up the problem. There is no evidence that it causes harm. GD don't worry about it...all doctors check for UTI and infections to prevent a worse problem like a kidney infection that can be life threatening. This is the reason that we have to pee in a cup every time we have an appointment. This is not taking a chance like taking an allergy pill to clear a stuffy nose...this is to prevent a life threatening situation like a kidney infection that can lead to cause more serious problems that in turn could compromise a pregnancy. I did consult more than one doctor and my pharmasist before taking the antibiotics and they all said that it was fine. I cannot tell you the difference between the antibiotics...ask your pharmisist they are usually pretty good with this.

TP this dates back to 2005...not sure how your found this thread. Sorry for my post...it obviously is outdated and you probably have a healthy 1 year old by now, GD. I can see TP that you have a strong feeling on taking medication during pregnancy.
