Having the baby early

I was 36 weeks with my first child when my water broke and I went into labor. He was out 8 hours later and my question is... Is it normal for a baby to come out early on its own or was my due date screwed up?

I asked my doctor about the baby being born early. If the baby is born before the 37th week it is considered pre-term, however my doctor told me that it is not uncommon for babies to be born 2-4 weeks early. A General pregnancy term is said to be anywhere from 37-42 weeks.
