I just went to my son's 9 month check up and his pediatrician said that he can start eating soft table foods such as cheese, bagels, crackers, cooked vegetables and peeled fruits. I am absolutely terrified! I feel so comfortable with the pureed foods and I just cannot imagine letting him try to eat these foods! He only has one tooth, and it just popped the surface, it's not even all the way up. I can not picture him eating these foods without having a problem. Does anybody have any suggestions or advice on what I should do or any past experiences? ↓

I forgot to mention... We tried feeding him Stage 3 Gerber foods about two weeks ago and he acted like he was choking on all the pieces the whole time. So that doesn't give me too much hope on table food... :-( ↑

If you aren't comfortable I would wait. Especially since he only has one tooth. My dd is 18 months and when we aren't going to be home when it's time for her to eat I just take a stage 2 with us and she eats that. You could do applesauce as it is fairly smooth. ↑

Sometimes when you first try a chunkier food, like the 3rd foods they will gag a little I think it is the texture more than choking. 3rd foods are so soft if you give him little bites he can mash it with his gums and he will not choke. I would get him use to the 3rd foods and then start with some very small diced carrots, peas, green beans, and then move to more harder things like gerber puffs or cheerios,or small peices of chicken. The 3rd foods are made to help them learn to mash with their gums and get use to texture. Start with them first and he will get use to it after a few feedings. Also Wal- Mart has a cracker like thing called mum mums, they disolve really easily and my dd could eat them at about 8 months with no problem. I should add that she was late getting teeth too she just now got her 3rd tooth and she is 11 months. ↑

my dd is 7 months (started weaning at 4 mos) and is just starting to eat "soft foods". She doesnt get any jared foods, I make everything she eats and I am starting her on Minestrone...I think this will be a good transition food for her. Not only is it packed with veggies (tomatoes, carrots, celery, zucchini) but it also has noodles. I will puree this, but not all the way...I will still leave small chunks of soft veggies/pasta for her to chew. Although my dd has one tooth, babies can chew well without any so I wouldnt worry so much about that. Good luck! ↑
My lo didn't get his first tooth till he was 11.5 months old. And by that time he was eating all sorts of stuff. He loved cheerios and those little puffs. He would also gag on stage three but I don't advise you to wait to much longer as this is a excellent time for them to start self feeding skills. I never really fed my lo to much stuff out of the store. Banana is good at that age cut in small pieces. I bet he would love to have a cracker. Just watch him I think that he will be great. I think that we are the ones who are not ready sometimes not them :). My lo is 16 months now and still only has 6 teeth. He eats bacon, smokies, Chicken and everything. It doesn't seem to bother him and never really has. Good luck ↑

Many children don't get their first teeth till a year old and it usually doesn't impact what they eat. My daughter was eating most table foods with us by 8 months. They do remarkably well and I agree with countrymom401 that you don't want to wait much longer then this...self-feeding skills are really important to develop. Also, my little on never would eat stage 2 or 3 food...we went straight from puree to table foods....she loved having the choice as to waht she would eat next, loved the feel of the foods and I just made sure all the pieces were really small at first. ↑

My son is 8 months old and is eating all the stage 2 baby food. I also give him those hard breads from the baby aisle and just started Cherrios. He was having an awful time picking them up at first and after only a week can get most of them into his mouth. I think you would be fine with starting solids just sit near by him. ↑

I homemade my dds food and she was eating a lot of table food by 8 months. Cheerios were started by 7 months. She didn't get any teeth until 10 1/2 months. You could try cottage cheese, scrambled egg yolks or just use a fork to mash things like bananas and pears. He probably is just having trouble adjusting to the texture of anything besides purees. Keep trying and he'll figure it all out. ↑
