"Implantation" refers to the embryo attaching itself to the uterus. Sometimes women experience spotting or even light bleeding as the embryo burrows deep into the lining. (Some don't; either is normal.) This process can happen in a day, but in some cases, takes a full 4 days for the embryo to completely attach. Implantation generally occurs between 6-12 days following ovulation/conception, with the majority (over 80%) occurring between 8-10 days past ovulation (DPO.)
Once implantation is complete, the embryo begins producing hCG, the pregnancy hormone. It usually takes about 2-4 days for the implanted embryo to begin producing hCG at a high enough level to be detected by a sensitive pregnancy test. So, if you have experienced spotting or bleeding, and you believe it may be related to implantation, you should probably wait about 2-4 days to test (using a sensitive, early-detection test that measures at 25 mIU/mL or lower. If you are using a test that is less sensitive, allow more time. See the HPT Overview for a list of various HPT sensitivity levels.) It is possible to experience a negative test at this point and still be pregnant; if so, wait another couple of days to allow the hCG to build up in your system to a level high enough to be detected, and test again. Mary, I had the same thing happen to me just as you described (pink then maybe a light brown)- but I never had more than enough than for maybe a panty liner. But if there is anything I have learned with pregnancy is almost no two pregnancies are a like and those stupid 'test 5 days before your first missed period' test did NOT work for me! lol! We were very lucky and got pregnant on the first try, I had JUST gotten off my BC and didnt think it would happen so quick, but wasnt sure what my body would do. I never spotted before af, and I thought that is what it was but, ta-da here I am at 26 weeks! ;) Good luck to ya! ↑
I've been reading this long line of posts with great interest. Thanks everyone for posting! I can't tell if I'm pregnant. Implantation happened yesterday morning. I know this because I got some bleeding and abdominal cramps. Since then, I have continued to have some bleeding but not too much. That was until this afternoon. The bleeding has started to become a little heavier and now there are some solids. I don't know how to describe it except to say that it looks like some placenta. The bleeding isn't enough to call it a period but I'm worried. Has this happened to anyone?
Can anyone give me some encouragement? I am now 12DPO. I ovulated on day 12 of my cycle as was confirmed by ultrasound. My husband and I BD on day 10 and twice on day 12, morning and evening. I have been lightly spotting since 9DPO. I used to spot for 4 or 5 days before AF but that hasn't happened since I started taking Metformin. No spotting at all my last cycle, it was textbook perfect. But anyway, 9DPO is really, really early for me to spot if this were AF. The spotting was pink the first day and has been brown the last 4 days. It's only been the size of a quarter so I barely needed a panty liner and it stops in the evening. I took a pt at 10DPO and it was negative but that may have been too early. I've been really light headed lately and hungry and really tired and a bit naseous but I'm afraid that might be PMS or all in my head. My boobs aren't really sore like they were last time I was pg. And last time I was pg I didn't spot at all until I miscarried.
Do you think that light spotting from 9DPO that lasts for more than 4 days could be implantation bledding?? ↑

This could definately be implantation bleeding. I had implantation bleeding with my 2 1/2 year that lasted a week+. I thought it was my AF so I did not find out I was pregnant until I was 6 weeks. Wait at least a few more days and test again. Good luck! ↑
Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and have been reading all your experiences and have found it to be a great help. My story is that I already have 2 chilren and am now trying for a 3rd with my new partner. I recently had a coil removed and am on metformin for PCOS. First month of trying I am now due my period on 13 April. I have been experiencing nausea, very sore boobs, insomnia and lower back pain for the past week. I started to bleed on 10th April but only when I wiped, it then went away and has come back today but again only when I wipe. I feel as though my period will not come but still have some slight discomfort cramps. I just feel different. Do you think this could be IB. I have tried a hpt today but is showing -. What are your views. ↑
Hi. I am new to this site. I read almost all of the answers above. Long! Anyway - Here is my story. I was suppose to get my period on the 7th of April. I am a pretty consistant girl of 28 days. So when my period did not come, I was pretty worried. Well Tuesday, I started to spot very very light and I thought it was implantation bleeding. It was only in the morning and went away. Wednesday it was a little heavier with a few small clots. But again, nothing like a normal day 2 for me. Stopped and started all day long drops here and there. Nothing to even fill a pad or light day tampon. Thursday back to bright red. I put in a tampoon thinking "oh period is here" and just went about my day. After taking the tampon out, lightly streaked like a day 4 kinda of thing. I was shocked. Where was the blood I was expecting to see? Friday - same thing. Saturday woke up a little heavier again, but it also is lightening up. Morning is usually the heaviest but after that first pee, it starts to decrease all day or stop and come back.
I have fatigue like crazy, a dry mouth (which I get my 8 glasses of water), hungry / yet dont want to eat due to feeling "not right" yet not hungry. I thought it was implant bleeding but to go on for 5 days now? It is just so unusual and not normal for me. I took a test and it is neg. I keep waiting for a heavy day two but don't get it. It's like I bounce back and forth between day 1 and day 4.
I keep feeling like "something" is up with me. This is not normal but due to my bleeding, I don't want to go to the doctor. I honestly feel it would come back negative and him look at me like I am stupid. Like I don't know what a period looks like.

so people are saying implantation bleeding is on going. what could this be? i had spoted it was gone in a wipe. and now 7 days later there was more blood (this time a lil heavier) and then wiped and was gone... nothing since im not due for my period yet. and its not my period because its gone, what was there? is this IB????? ↑
my turn, 5 days late, light reddish/pikish blood with cramps. only noticed when i wipe. i have the cold type of feeling with a funny dry mouth type funny taste, blue veins are showing in right bb. extremly nausous and tired. i have done 4 hpts 10po, day 1-2-3-4 of missed periods. so i was told this is a sign of pg and to test in 2 weeks. i have never been 5 days late and spotted before. not sure what to think. so im there with ya guys, i have had symptoms since 3dpo. ↑
Wow! I have literally spent the better part of the day reading all of this information. I actually feel much better now. Maybe I'm not crazy. My husband and I have been ttc since Aug 2006. I went off Depo Provera after about 7 years of being on it, so I wasn't expecting to get preg right off, but the wait still sucks. I started bleeding yesterday (10dpo) and it was light at first, but became heavy enough to fill a light tampon throughout the day. Last night before bed, the 2nd tampon was almost completely dry -TMI :( so I didn't wear anything to bed. In the middle of the night, I felt wetness and had a few clots when I went to the bathroom- heavy and dark red. Today, it is reddish brown, still nowhere near as heavy as a regular period and absolutely no cramping. I wouldn't be due for af until Monday the 30th and I am extremely regular- 28 day cycle. Breasts are very tender and my arms feel tingly. Slight metallic taste in my mouth. I hope these are not all in my head b/c I want to conceive. I am 32 and this would be our first. hi i am kaylz, i was due my period today and i had light cramping this morning and thought it was period but it seems lighter and it was bright red blood so i dont know if it is my period or am i pregnant ? and i started to get sore breasts nd feeling really exhauted and really tired and feelin really sick ,is bright red spotting normal for implantion bleed or am i being stupid ? i really hope i am pregnant otherwise i would be devestate ↑
My status update. I was not PG. I didn't put two and two together until recently. Two years ago I had a PG scare just like this past one but not PG. Then I realized that I also two months before had an Ovarian Cyst burst on me. Just like this time. So when the ovarian cyst burst, my next month cycle was normal because I ovulated on the other side. When it went back to the cyst side, I did not ovulate / completely heal and therefore my period was very small. I started reading about missed periods etc on the internet and it says sometimes a girl will not ovulate for some reason and her period might come a few days late and be very light. I guess that is what happend to me since I was not completely healed on my side yet. So it you get ovarian cysts at all, that could very well have been the cause of the PG scare. Oh well. I would have been very happy had I truly been PG but at the same time a little relieved. I always wanted to be married before the baby. Good luck to all of you though! Oh yeah... funny thing. As soon as I came up with my conclusion, its like I felt the stress just melt off of me and all of my "symptoms" went away within a few hours. Hey everybody. I've read through everyone's posts and it seems that every experience is different. here's my story. I got my period on the April 23rd. We had sex on April 28th, May 1st and 2nd. last night we had sex and when i went to the bathroom I noticed a little blood, but just mostly really really pink. i passed a clot about an hour later (dime sized, sank straight to the bottom, pinkish-red). could this be implantation bleeding? I don't keep track of anything and I have no idea when I ovulate but my cycles are short (25 days). I don't usually spot like this and it seems to be right around the time it should be. Help!! ↑
Okay, I have finally finished reading through everyone's entries. So here is mine. I had a chemical pregnancy miscarriage last month. About a week after that maybe a week and a half my dh and I bd several times throughout the next few days (he was leaving the next Tuesday for 7 1/2 wks for basic training for the USCG) so anyways, my symptoms are soar breasts which are swollen, pain in my nipples (which I have never had before, no feeling at any time in my nipples), nausea, dizziness, faint feeling, frequent urination, cramping in lower abdomen and lower back mainly, very gassy, cry very easily, and thats all I can think of right now. 2-3 days before expected AF I started spotting brownish red, but only when I used the restroom, then there was a time when I used the restroom later on that night that I had a good amount of dark blood, then the next time, nothing whatsoever. I woke up this morning with just brown discharge when I used the restroom and the rest of the day has been dark red when using the restroom. Could this be IB or just a weird AF?? ↑

here is my story: I have been having a problem. I thought I charted right but on the 31CD I started bleeding lightly. it was pink and brown but by that evening it was red but still light with justa slight crampy discomfort. I figured it was my monthly satarting up. 24 hours in it stopped and I was confused, not normal. Then it started again the next night and lasted about 4 hours before stopping. a day and a half later this past saterday I started spotting again in a pinkish brown but it was for like 2 hours than nothing. yesterday when I wiped there was a brownish blob substance that reminded me of a mucus plug and still nothing.My periods are normally heavy deep red with clotting and pain. Took a pregnancy test today and it said negative. I don't want to give up hope but I'm going out of my mind. I just want to scream "whats going on". Any advice would be appreciated. :) ↑
Hi there, yes this sounds like it very likely could be implantation bleeding...I would wait another day or so, or are you late yet or not? Then do a hpt! Good luck to you and keep me posted!

Just an update... I took several home preg tests and one blood test in the past few weeks- all negative. My symptoms have pretty much gone away (or maybe they were in my head). Anyway, if it was a period that I had, it was extremely light and very early. I'm waiting until the 24th when I should start again and we will see what happens. Either my period was irregular for the first time ever, or I will be REALLY suprised and be pregnant going on several weeks now! From everyone's entries it is clear that every woman's bodies and symptoms are different. Makes it kind of hard to know what to expect.... ↑
Here is another story just to illustrate how different everyone really is. I was away on holiday in canada for 3 weeks and two weeks after my last period got what I thought was another period. I didn't think too much of it as I had had a short 21 day cycle before. It lasted 5 days and was a light period, but not so light that I took much notice of it. I had sore breast and was extremely tired, but thought it may be prolonged jet lag. After the bleeding stopped (after about 5 days) the next time my husband and I had intercourse (about 3 days later) I had bleeding, it was red and brown in colour and I thought it was left over period bleeding. A few day later we had intercourse again and I had more bleeding. I didn't have any spotting at any other time except after sex. We still had a few days left of of 3 week holiday so waited til I got back to the UK to get it checked out by the doctor. I was still feeling very tired all the time and my breasts were still sore and a bit swollen. by the time I got back and headed to the doctor I had spotting of a very brown thick substance, daily. The doctor checked my cervix first and had some tests done to make sure there wasn't anything wrong there, mainly due to the bleeding after sex. I waited a week for the results to come through and finally got them on a friday. They all came back normal so booked an appointment on the monday to see what alse it could be. I still had spotting this whole time of the brown substance. I wasn't feeling right and something just felt weird so I got a home pregnancy and it came up positive! This was all very confusing because by this stage I had been spotting for 2 weeks and had what I thought was a period before that. The monday appointment confirmed that I was pregnant and was sent to have a scan to make sure it was all ok. The scan revealed I was 7 weeks pregnant and there was even a heartbeat! They said that it was implantation bleeding and in some women it can last days or weeks. I am now nearly 8 weeks and I am still spotting the same brown substance (old blood) and the doctors said it could last another week, or another month there is no telling. Implantation bleeding is very confusing, as I had what I thought was a period and spotting for weeks now. I hope this helps someone else out there. ↑
I started spotting on the 13th of this month and have had some each day since...it has varied from brownish to light pink and just a little when i went to the bathroom to a few drops on a pad. I would have started my period on the 13th as well, which would be 14 dpo. I have NEVER had such a light period before so i took a pregnancy test....I'm PREGNANT!!!!!! ↑
I have been nauteous for three weeks now. Not feeling well , tired, cranky, I have been having mild cramping for two weeks now . I am supposed to get my period on Tuesday. But I had verrrrrrry light pink when i urinated this afternoon. I don't remember having implantation bleeding for my son that was almost 16 years ago !! I hope this was inplantation bleeding . I am soooooo nervous. I have the blue veins showing up on my breasts and the dark line that shows up below your belly button. I had never heard of implantation bleeding before this. ↑
I had light bleeding like what you get at the very start of a period but no actual AF for 3 days and that was when I tested with a HPT and ended up with a BFP. ↑
I am due for Af tomorrow. Today when I wiped it was pink. I have very light period cramps. Is Implatation Bleeding ever accompanied by light cramps. I miscarried in March and I dont feel like I did then, but I am scared. Any stories would help!

Thanks for the feedback. When you say "light bleeding" what do you mean? It seems that since I wrote that first post, the bleeding became "spotty" brownish/maroonish. Does this sound positive or do you think its AF? I guess the only way to know is to take a test, but just wondering about others stories! ↑
It was how you describe...at first it was light pink, as the day went on it became darker and more maroonish and was gone the next day. Thats why I came to the pregnancy conclusion and went and got a test. It was like I went through all the stages of my period in one day, but not heavy at all, so I knew something wasn't normal. I would say if you don't get your normal af soon, definitly get a test. ↑
On 24DEC06 Ihad my son. Ihad my first ppaf 18FEB07. Since then nothing. I'm also breastfeeding. Well on 19MAY07 I went to ER because I was sick they did a preg test and it was -. So later that day I had some pink spotting only when I wiped that ended 21MAY07. So should I take another test or not? ↑
Well if you are breastfeeding, that may be why your af is not normal. My af didn't return until 7 m after my daughter was born, because I was bf. When it did return, it was abnormal, until after I stopped bf completely. This may explain why you are having spotting and why it came and then left. It all has to do with the hormones that are released while lactating. I would probably wait to see if you have any additional signs :-) ↑
Okay first let me say that I had this same thing with my 2nd child so anyway my husband and I are trying ttc and I should have started on the 25th of this month but instead on the 24th I had like pink drops on my panties so I thought well it's strange that I haven't had cramps because I usually cramp soo bad I cry but no cramps then the next day still just a few pink spots, I used a panty liner and that has gone on for a couple of days now today it's brown slime kind of. sorry for the graphics but anyway so I thought maybe this could be IB so I took a test and it came out neg...now I'm bummed :( I have normal periods every month so like the rest of you I am soo confused.
