Kidney size

I had an ultrasound done at about 20 weeks or so and the doctor/midwife (midwife at the time) said that the kidneys were a little enlarged, but that the baby probably had to pee. The doctor called back and scheduled me for an appointment with a maternal/fetal specialist for an ultrasound. They told me that it was probably not a big deal but to keep an eye on it (this was in May). I had a second ultrasound with them on June 9th, and the doctor then said that they couldn't "see" anything wrong, but once the baby is born, it will have to see how they function since they are longer than they should be. The doctor's office called me back and said I had to go to the childrens hospital to see a fetal specialist for a consult...I am getting kinda worried. As far as they know things are ok, but......if that is the case, why the consult already?? Anybody have any ideas??

Hi there - I was just surfing this website and happened upon this question. It caught my attention b/c I just had twins in Oct and one of them had a dilated (enlarged) kidney at the 20 week. We had to get a more in-depth ultra-sound - which showed BOTH his kidneys were dilated. We also found a spot on his heart... Ugh. Given the fact that I was in my 30s, that this was a twin pregnancy and he had two issues, they were concerned about Downs' so I went to have an amnio. All came back perfect - and both twins were born happy and healthy. Once he urinated (after being born) for the first time - his kidneys were normal.

Btw, the ultrasound tech that kept monitoring the size of his kidneys said it was SOOOOO common. And I found a lot of other Moms that went through the same thing. Try not to worry!!
