Long term effects of copper IUD on embryo

I am 5 days late for menses. I have the paragaurd copper IUD and think I just might be preggers. I have only been this late once in the 2 years since resuming menses after breastfeeding for 18 months and that was on the 3rd menses after resuming. So if I am pregnant I will welcome another happily. I have not found any info online about the possible effects of the copper on the developing embryo and the possible effects on a later developing fetus. Any links to studies or personal experiences would be appriciated.

I just got this answer from 'justask.com'
I hope that this answer can eventually help someone with the same inquiry.

"If you are among the few women that get pregnant with a copper IUD, you can expect the following. Approximately 50% of such pregnancies end in miscarriage. therefore, most doctors will try to remove it if you are pregnant, to prevent the miscarriage.

If you do carry the pregnancy, and it was removed, there are no known effects to the surviving baby.

If you do carry the pregnancy, and the IUD remains inside the entire pregnancy (which can happen - you usually will pass the IUD with the delivery in such cases), there are also no known effects the the baby. the baby is actually protected by the membranes from the copper exposure. The IUD will get lodged between the membranes and the uterine lining.

So the major effect of the IUD on the pregnancy is that it often causes a miscarriage, and this is generally thought to be because of a poor implantation."
