My son refuses to eat baby food...

I dont know what to do. At my DS's last dr's appt (6 months) doc said that he needed to up his baby food/cereal feedings to three times a day. We have been working on it, and have been doing really good feeding him every night for dinner, and he has been eating an entire jar of stage 2. He wont eat during the day or in the morning anything but milk. So all of the sudden, he wont eat ANY kind of baby food. Everything I have tried he eats one or two bites, and then closes his mouth so tight I feel like if I do feed him its like I am forcing it. He is now 8 1/2 months old and his doc appt for 9 months is quickly approaching. Also I should mention he doesnt have any teeth yet. I just dont know what to do. I know most docs dont agree, but I put rice cereal in all of his bottles, and he eats 8oz every 3 hours, and eats either 4-5 bottles a day... so I know he is getting enough food, I just know he needs to be getting something besides just the formula.... any suggestions would be much appreciated!

hi cblack. my baby went thru this too. your son just feels ready to feed himself!! i know i spent a couple days stressing out that he wasnt eating, pretty much forcing food into his mouth everytime he opened it before i figured out what he wanted :) start him off on really soft cooked veggies, those gerber puffs or cheerios are good, ummm trying to think about what i was giving him. cooked apples with cinnamon sprinkled on them were a big hit! tofu he likes a lot. back then i was still trying to give him his baby food as well (i still had a lot made up in the freezer) so i would give him some finger foods while i spoon fed him and that seemed to keep him distracted from the spoon. anyway, hope this helped, good luck!!

Maybe you should stop with the rice cereal?

Cblack, I agree with kim, your son will just eat when he is ready. My dd is 14 months and there are days she only drinks breast milk and some ceral from the bottle. She never ate much at all. IF she is hungry then it will take her sometimes 2 days to eat an entire jar of baby food. Now she just eats what she can put in her mouth herself. Granted she is on the skinny side, but perfectly healthy. My doc never worried nor told me to up the food. She was bf until 6 months exclusively. Dont worry and enjoy!

My son was eating solids around 5 months then at 6 he completely refused it but now at almost 9 months he eats a lot. (just not baby food) He only has two teeth but they don't need teeth to eat most things. And I wouldn't worry about him not eating solids yet. My nephew is 11 months old and will NOT eat anything, just breastmilk. no cereal or anything. And he's a chubby baby. I'm sure your baby is fine. I just waited a week or so and tried solids again with my baby and after a few weeks he started eating again. He just didn't want baby food was all. He wanted to pick it up and feed himself. Steamed veggies are a good idea, cut into bite size pieces. same with pretty much anything that is soft or gets soft. My son LOVES graham crackers!

If your putting rice cereal in all his bottles he is filling up too much to feel hungry, I don't blame him for not wanting to eat it/anything from a spoon, why bother if he can drink it. Also have you tried food that doesn't come out of a jar/can? Both my dd & ds hated processed baby food with a passion (except pureed apple or custard), but would eat nearly anything that I cooked. Babies often love mashed banana, purred pear/apple, cooked mashed sweet potato & other fruits & veggies that are slightly sweeter, & you can add rice cereal into any fruit/veggie mixture. As for his teeth you will be surprised at what babies can still eat with no teeth. dd didn't get any til about 10mths & she enjoyed small pieces of ripe banana/other soft fruits, & sucking on milk arrowroot biscuits from about 7mths.

GOOD NEWS!!! For some reason DS finally decided to start eating baby food... I just kept consistent and he finally is getting the hang of things. He is eating a small jar in the morning along with (afterward) a bottle of 4-6oz. After naptime, he has a large jar or two small jars. Another naptime, and a bottle,4-6oz, then about an hour later he eats dinner... again either a large jar or two small jars of baby food. He usually wont eat anything after that last meal since its so close to bedtime, but sometimes he will have one more bottle 4-6oz. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Now we just need to get better about the sippy cup so we can try and get rid of the bottle at one like the doc wants. :) Thanks again!
