Need advice after two ultrasounds

My LMP was Feb. 14, 2008. We had our first sonogram a week ago because I had a miscarriage in December. At the sonogram, the tech saw a gestational sac and yolk sac, but said that I was only measuring 5w 1d even though we calculated over 7 weeks. We went back a week later and the baby only measured 5 w 3 d with no fetal pole. The doctor wasn't concerned about me being behind because I could have ovulated late, but she was worried about the lack of growth in one week. She told me to go back again in 12 days for another u/s, but she didn't sound too hopeful. Has anyone experienced a lack of growth from one u/s to the next? Oh, and they were both transvaginal. I don't want to give up hope, but I want to be realistic.

I am sorry to hear about your recent miscarriage. I know that early on babies develop at their own rate. Not every baby is text book in this area. I would try to stay positive and just see what happens at your next appointment. My OB always waits until 8 weeks to do the first ultrasound. That way the heartbeat is either there and everything is fine, or it isn't and there is no guess work or waiting for the next week to know anything. It sucks that you have to go through this. I hope everything is alright when you go back. Please let me know, good luck.

Hi Diana, I would be concerned about the lack of growth, but stranger things have happened in the ultrasound world. Also, the measurement of growth is done by human hand and subject to human error. I'm an ultrasound tech and the measurements are all subjective to the person doing it on a particular day. So, don't read too much into it just yet. I have also seen slow growing fetuses play catch up at another week, so you're just going to have to see this through, but don't put too much emphasis on measurements, ok? HUGS!

Thanks to the both of you for your replies. It made us feel better. I do have some cramping, but it feels like it is in my ovaries on the side rather than in the middle. I read that is normal, is that true? Is it true that cramping in the middle of the abdomen is a sign of miscarriage? I go back on the 21st and will keep you update.

Diana- Sorry to hear about your past losses. my doc said that implantation can happen more like 2-3 weeks after the egg and sperm meet. Every website you look on says the typical 7-10 days.... but it can be more like i mentioned. Stay positive.

I had the same problem. My doc sent me to a specialist and all the good stuff and everything was fine. Had some slight other problems, but they had nothing to do with the growth. Im sure everything is OK!
