Hi Everyone,
I am 17 weeks pregnant and 39 yo. I was diagnosed last week with a marginal placenta previa. Now today my Ob office calls me and says I have an elevated risk for Downs (1 in 120). I was going to get an amnio tomorrow and have heard that it can agitate a placenta previa. I am also getting a level II ultrasound. I am hoping the ultrasound will decrease the risk of DS. If not I may have to get the amnio. Has anyone every had an amnio who has Placenta Previa? Do you know anything about if it is contraindicated? Any info would be much appreciated. Trying to not get too nervous but it is difficult.
Thanks, Kerry ↓
I am 32 weeks along with a complete previa. I am 34 years old and opted not to get tested for downs. I think just because of our age we are considered "risky" for downs. My doctor asked me if I would abort the pregnancy if the test came back positive and of course I said no, so she recommended to not even have the test. As far as ultrasound, I have had 6 up to this point, both regular and vaginal. I have faith in the ultrasound and the diagnostic ability of them and baby looks perfect. Your previa has a great chance of correcting itself, your still early in the game. Take Care! Kris ↑

Hi Kerry. 1 in 120 is definitely not an elevated risk for someone our age. It also means that you have a less than 1% chance of having a baby with Downs (.008%). My Doctor told me at our age the blood tests will always come back with what they call an "elevated risk" across the board. She says she has older patients who have healthy babies all the time. She also believes that amnios are done way too commonly (and often because the doctors want the money from doing them without any real reason for them). She also does not think they are warranted on a 1% risk factor. Her advice was to have the level II ultrasound. If anything showed up on the Level II, then we would consider the amnio. My Level II was clear and at age 39 I had a perfectly healthy dd. I hope this helps. ↑
