I am now 15 weeks pregnant, and last night while standing in my kitchen and talking to a friend, I had to lean back against my pantry door because my heart felt like I had run six miles in a dead panic. It lasted about two or three minutes. It happened again this morning, but less intense.
I was very worried, and felt faint and dizzy. So far, sitting down, calming down and taking long, slow, deep breaths has helped, as well as drinking ice water.
VERY relieved to read that it seems kind of common. Still going to call my OBGYN today and let her know! ↑
I have noticed heart palpitations as well. I am 12 weeks pregnant with twins. I am on blood thinners for a predesposed blood clotting conditon, so this is scaring me. I have an appointment next week with the docotor. Thanks you for easy my mind that I'm not throwing a blood clot or something, ↑
Kristin, i wouldn't worry about the clotting connection, i don't think it works that way, seems to be just a normal pregnancy thing that some people get, especially those of us w/ twins. I delivered last week, and my pulse is already almost normal, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks so much for all your replies to this problem. I've been having this problem too. I am 6 weeks pregnant and have not mentioned it to my doctors yet, but certainly plan to. It is comforting to know that this is common and probably not something to worry about. ↑
I just found out that I am pregnant, which puts me at 4 weeks. I have been experiencing the rapid pulse off and on all day. It has ranged between 95-105. It is very uncomfortable and disconcerting. Good to know that this is apparently normal. I wonder why it is happening so early in pregnancy? ↑
Hi I am about 13 weeks pregnant and I have been experiencing the same thing, mostly at night or early in the morning when i am taking a shower and i feel out of breath. It really scares me, I would like to know if its normal or not. ↑
I'm also at about 4 weeks and my heart has been beating rapidly. I'm wondering if it nerves and I don't know how to settle down or what. I just found out yesterday that I was pregnant and I think I'm just nervous. ↑
hmmm... i have that same thinq and i thouqht it was part of braxton-hichts(im 34 weeks) i may be wronq. but you should try elevate your back more make it easier to breathe i know youre not that far alonq but this helps me. sit up more in bed, pile some pillows =) qet comfy ↑
I'm so glad that everyone here is having the same symptoms as myself. I'm 21wks pregnant and being having these extreme heart palipation for no odd reason. Regardless if I'm Sitting or laying down. I haven't called my doctor yet regarding this issue but I do have an appointment on the 27th of next and I'm going to mention it too her. But I would like to thank each and everyone of you for posting your concern and symptoms on here! I think it's a great way to relate to each and everyone..Good Luck to all the mothers on hear and God Bless you all. ↑
I was just lying on the couch resting and I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest just about 10 min. ago. I figured I would look up on the internet before I panicked. I will be 13 weeks on monday. Is this normal? ↑
I am no doctor but this has been happening to me this entire pregnancy. I am now almost 22 weeks and my heart rate seems to be elevated even more than in the beginning. All this my high risk ob told me would happen at this stage and is very normal. Having had said that, it doesn't make it any less unnerving. Hang in there. I would definately discuss it with your doctors but in the mean time try not to worry. Tarra ↑
I experience a similar notion. I can hear my pulse beating in my ear when this happens every other sound fades away.. i am scared and need to know if I should worry. It happens while I'm at work. ↑
i have had a high heart teat after i gave birth to my first child. now with my 2nd im on meds for it but in the mornings or if i get upset it startes to go all out of control. im 14 weeks now and every no and then it will go up to 120 but if i lie down and try not to feel so stressed it will go down to the 90s.....the docotrs tell me im just wired this way. thats all they can come up with. ↑
Hi lesley. When I was pregnat with my daughter I experienced this a lot. My doctor said it was panic attacks. Showers usually help or drink a glass of water that sometimes help also. There is not much you can do, when this happens ther more you think about it is the more it flares up. So try to focus on something else and talk to your doctor also maybe he/she will have some more ideas. ↑
I am having the same trouble. I am 17 weeks. I spent 4 days in the hospital last week. At my doctor appoint. my pulse was 176. However after I sit down it went down to 130. They did an echocardiogram and an ECG and had me on monitors to monitor me but everything came back fine. My pulse will go down in the 70's, 80's and 90's at night. It will go to 90-105 sitting up but the minute I stand up it jumps to 120 - 130. My doc acts like its just part of my pregancy and has not put me on any meds. I'm hoping it will go down. I'm tired a lot and I'm trying to take it easy. I did not experience this with my first child. However, I did develop toxemia with her at 28 weeks. I hope I don't get that again. ↑
I am 29 1/2 weeks pregnant. I too have had palapitations and a rapid heart beat. I was experiencing this before I was pregnant though. Doctors always said it was due to anxiety. After becoming pregnant, it has been a much more rapid heart beat, and wakes me up a few times a night. I thought it may be due to dehydration, so I drink water like a fish. I am going to the cardiologist next week to check get put on a monitor. Heart disease does not run in my family, and my bp is fine. I don't believe I have a life threatening problem, but I know it makes me uncomfortable. I don't feel comfortable taking meds while pregnant, but if it safe I will look into it. For most of you all, I am sure it is pregnancy/ anxiety related, but it is better to be safe than sorry. It has been three years since I first experienced this uncomfort. Hopefully, I will find something that helps. I hope the same for you all as well. Good luck and best wishes. ↑
At 31, I am 6 weeks with my first. Until week 4 I was running 25+ miles a week with a resting heart rate of ~62. Now, only two weeks later, I'm winded sitting at my desk and my heart rate is hovering around 85. I can't seem to take deep enough breaths and have had a very difficult time getting to / staying asleep (although the racing heart rate & need for deep breaths is not only limited to bedtime). Seeing Ob for first appointment on Friday, but until then all the previous posts have helped a great deal. Wishing you all well! ↑
Hello all. I have read all the postings and it all sounds about right. I am 14 weeks pregnant with my 7th child, I am 31 yrs old and I have always had a fast heart rate but it does go up during pregnancy. Normal resting bpm is around 100 but as soon as I get up to do something it goes to around 120. It has even went up to 180+ before. I have had test ran for thyroid and sugar all came back negative. I had a EKG aslo and everything was fine. I just dont understand that why I continue to have this problem even when Im not pregnant. That is what scares me. I know its normal while your expecting.... but after or before? About a year ago while walking on a treadmill at the gym , I wasnt pregnant and my heart rate went to 177 and I wasnt even jogging or that. That is really scary. Has any of you experienced the rapid hear rate while you wern't pregnant? Thanks to all and God Bless! Renee ↑
Hi Renee,
I am pretty sure that this is just pregnancy related because I can't remember feeling like this constantly before I was pregnant. I can remember times while being really anxious pre-pregnancy that I noticed a rapid heartbeat. I am really curious to see how I feel after delievery. I pray it is better. The rapid rate seemed to ease up for awhile in the beginning of the second trimester but I am now almost 26 weeks and I am noticing an increase lately. I also have had a ekg and an echocardiogram that came back normal which was a huge relief but nonetheless still upsetting that this problem is going on. Did you feel this with any of your other pregnancies? This is my fourth and it was not a problem with the others. Take care of yourself and your baby and we will all pray that this goes away when we deliever. ↑
Yes im so happy i found this site, my rapid heartbeat has started to scare me. I am 21 weeks pregnant and like many respondants it also gets worse at night and after i eat. Thanks for reassurance everyone! ↑
i am having that right now... i m so relieved to have found this forum.... the heart beat is so loud that i can almost see my body move with it... it's scary but i guess after reading u all's comments it's normal.. i m 23 weeks. ↑
i have it too and went to a heart dr. who said it was nothing because it wasnt irregular, just fast. my dr. is concerned though. my pulse is always very fast (90-100) and although my blood pressure is fine (112/73) i think the fact that im so young (21) makes her worry that its a bigger problem. she even mentioned that my husband and should i take it into consideration before having children in the future. ↑
I am only 9 weeks pregnant and I can't even walk a short set of stairs without being out of breath and feeling like my heart is jumping out of chest. I work in a doctors office and my blood pressure was only 129/73 and my actual pulse was 88. It is not so scarey to know that others are feeling the same way. ↑
let's not forget that when pregnant our blood volume increases, which does create some more work for the heart. that could be the reason alot of you are noticing this only while you are pregnant. ↑
I am 12 weeks pregnant with number 2 and yes it occured to me with my first pregnancy I did take a beta blocker a minute dose every once in a while when I felt like it was getting out of control which helped- my healthy baby boy is now 2. It also occurs to me after eating or when I wake up the morning - I can't get out of my house without lying down and trying to relax b/f I can walk out the door. But the symptoms do resolve after delivery slowly but surely and I also believe extra Iron supplements along with your PNVits help
Good luck with everyone ↑
I had the same thing at 17 weeks that I ended up calling an ambulance because I was home all alone and got really scared! I have heard it can be normal. but at least to mention it to the doctor. Good luck to you! ↑
My pulse has been very high all of a sudden for the past week and I'm 14 weeks pregnant. I've always had a little anxiety and I've panicked before I was even pregnant every so often about my pulse but I always knew it was due to being anxious at the time. Now my heart beats very hard and fast even when I'm lying down and not even worried about anything. IT SCARES ME! I've had an EKG and it was normal. All my blood work came back normal, I guess they checked my thyroid? Everything fine. My heart rate at one point was up to 135!! It didn't last long but has pretty much been about 100. Sometimes I get breaks for a while and it will be around 80 like right now but very rarely any lower than that.
I'm only 23 and have never had health problems but when I'm trying to sleep at night and my heart won't calm down I feel like I'm gonna have a heart attack or something!! If this truly is a symptom of pregnancy it for sure is one I hate : (
God bless everyone here and that you all have very safe pregnancy's!! ↑
i had a serverly rapid heart rate at 12 weeks, and i had to go to the hospital for dehidration. If i were you i really would find out what the rate is. Normal is 80-90. ↑
