Rocking to Sleep

So, I know I brought this on myself, but my 7 month old HAS to be rocked to sleep every night or he will not sleep. It has been this way since he was born. We tried the CIO method just one night, but it was a disaster - he just got madder and madder until he was hysterical and banging his head on the crib, which then took twice as long to calm him down. I really don't mind rocking him to sleep, except that now when he wakes up during the night he needs to be rocked back to sleep each time and this can be as much as 7-8 times a night, and can take up to an hour each time!!! Needless to say, I haven't gotten much sleep and am very frustrated. He is teething right now, but his mouth does not seem to bother him during these night wakings, but could it still be from the teething?? He has never really slept "all through the night", but he used to only wake up a couple of times a night. Is there any hope for both of us to get better sleep??? Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!!
