ok...so as we all know y now, constipation is part of the package when pregnant. i have discussed it with my dr and have been trying everything reccomended ( stool softeners, suppositories, metamucil...and i drink a ton of water) i feel the urge every other day and when i go it hurts...and here is the embarrasing part...i swear its like trying to pass a corn cobb. :(..they get stuck and im miserable. can anyone give me any ideas...has anyone had luck with benefiber? or is there a better and safe alternative to colace? i am sorry for the TMI, but i am desperate. thank you.

Have you tried eating prunes? You can buy them bite size from the grocery store. I have been eating them every day, maybe 4 or so. They work wonders for constipation. I tried benefire, but I did no notice too much change wiht my constipaption. Also, All Bran Buds work great as well. My uncle is a pharmacist and told me to eat an apple with a glass of water. Good luck

I know your pain!!! if it has been several days, and you just need to flush it out...use milk of magnesia. It will do the trick, but it can be rather violent!! :) Also, I know that you aren't supposed to have a lot of caffine, but if you are desperate try a cup of coffee. It always got me goin (in more ways than one!) Good luck!

I had the same problem, although I described it as trying to pass a razor blade or a sharp rock or something. I found pineapple helped me. I don't know why but it did, and LOTS of water. I'm 6 mos. pp now and still have problems...ugh.

oh my gosh, Im not the only one! I have such trouble and its normal, so says my doctor. She told me to take Colace, I have perscription for it and to drink EXCESS amounts of water , that should help. I had it so bad a good couple times, I almost went to the ER!! So I completely understand... I just take 1 colace a day with lots of water seems to be working for me. Also you must get hemorrhoids? As I do from it, those will go away too. GOOD LUCK

Pineapple juice works for me - actually too good that now I have to stay away from it - I would think prunes would really work or if you can't stand prunes try dried apricots - those work wonders but don't OD on them right away to rush relief eat like 3-4 with a glass of water and see what happens - then if nothing happens in like an hour have 2-3 more ---while thankfully I haven't had constipation this time around I am 30 weeks the ghost of hemorrhoids past has reared it's ugly head! ARRGGGHHHH so I use preparation H wipes to help which might come in handy for you girls who might let loose violently eventually! Good luck to you all

You poor thing!! Have you tried psyllium seed husks? Its all natural and it does wonders even if you're not pregnant. Also there's prenatal vitamins called Prenatal Forte by Integrative therapeutics.

It has some great enzymes/bacteria. When I take it faithfully (3x a day) I don't have a problem with constipation. I like it because it doesnt' overload your system with one high dose of all those vitamins and you can spread it out over the course of the entire day.

my doctor recommended Miralax, but it hasnt really been working for me. I am going to try some of these remedies until my next dr. apt. then im going to ask him for something else to recommend! This constipation really sucks. I had no idea this was a "side effect" of pregnancy.

Milk of magnesia REALLY works well for me.

Milk of magnesia made me miserable for two days and only worked marginally. What trimester are you in? I had horrible constipation (nothing helped) my whole first trimester. How many stool softeners are you taking? You can take up to four (2, twice a day).

I have the same problem and high intake of fiber doesn't seem to help. I ordered Pre-Natal Laxative from DHERBS.com. Ingredients include CHAMOMILE, SLIPPERY ELM, IRISH MOSS, BIBITAKI, RHUBARB ROOT, GINGER ROOT, BUCKTHORN, PSYLLIUM HUSK, BILWA AND JALAP ROOT.

I HAD THAT PROBLEM! BUY SOME PRUNES AND EAT 1 OR TWO USUALLY THEY ARE VERY SMALL. I BOUGHT A BAG OF THOSE DRIED PRUNES AT THE STORE. I ATE 1 ON THE CAR AND BY THE TIME I GOT HOME I WAS READY TO VISIT THE JOHN! PAIN FREE

to moomaiden, I can't believe a company would put slippery elm into a prenatal supplement. Please do your research on this. Here is what I have found out: Herbs & Supplements Slippery elm
Other Names: American Elm, Elm, Indian Elm, Japanese Elm, Moose Elm, Red Elm, Sweet Elm, Ulmus fulva, Ulmus rubra, Winged Elm

When should I be careful taking it?

Precautions

The outer bark of slippery elm is known to contain chemicals that may cause pregnant women to miscarry. Although the inner bark, which is used in medicine, is not believed to contain these chemicals, pregnant women are still advised not to take slippery elm.
And who knows what those other herbs might do. Stick with the prunes, and High fiber cereals.

Try black licorice. Not the candy store kind but the real stuff from the health food store. Works great and tastes great. I made the mistake of using it as a potty treat for my 3year old and wow! It is powerful good!
It is totally safe too.

I drink plum juice and that has seemed to help. It is less aggressive than taking a laxative but not as strong as a stool softener.
