When should I start taking prenatal vitamins?

My husband and I had a pregnancy scare this past month (Turns out I'm not pregnant! ) and we began to discuss when the right time to have a baby would be. We both want one & have decided to try after Christmas. December is 6 months away. My question is: When should I start taking prenatal vitamins? And should I go ahead and stop birth control and just use condoms? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! (I'm so excited!! ) :)

you should give yourself a few months OFF the pill to let your body get back to "normal".....start the prenatel vitamens at least a month or two before you start trying

Took me 6 months after going off the pill. I found out I was pregnant 1 month after beginning the prenatal vitamins. Doc said start asap, it's healthier to be on them anyway - no harm in taking them. good luck

Ok, thanks, Tara. I'm going to go ahead and get the pre natal vitamins & just discuss the BC pill situation with my husband tonight.

My doctor said it is never too early to start taking pre natal pills...as a matter fo fact when I went in February for my check up I told her we were planning on trying in the fall and she went ahead and prescribed me prenatals and folic acid.

agree with everyone-start taking now, the iron will help build up your hemoglobin levels, which tend to drop in early pregnancy and makes you even more tired. FYI... if the iron makes you nauseated, try taking with food, or at bedtime. Hope that helps you out

I agree with everyone else. It is not too early to start taking prenatals. My dd was born Dec. '06 and I never stopped taking them. As far as the pill goes I have heard you should be off of it at least a month before you start trying.
