bottle feeding problems

Ok, I have a 4 month old and have been having trouble feeding her through a bottle. She was breastfeed until she was 2 months and then I switched her over to the bottle. Which she was doing ok with but now......OMG...She wants to eat every 2-2 1/2 hours and when she does eat only eats 2-3 ozes. She is a big baby. She weights over 17lbs and is very long. She is wearing 9-12 month clothes. Anyhow.....when I feed her after 2 ozes she acts like shes drowning. I thought that it might be the nipple going to fast or put on too tight but that wasn't it. She is always chewing on her hands or thumb (she doesn't take a pacifier)....when the nipple is in her month sometimes it sounds as if she is slipping off of it...then milk comes gushing out the sides. I can't figure this one out can any one help me. Does anyone else have this problem?

I don't really know what it is, but oddly enough my LO went through that when she was around 4 months old too! I think she might have been going through a really big growth spurt. She would only drink 4 oz bottles at a time, but then wanted another bottle like not even 3 hours later, and I would try to give her 6 oz ones and she would never finish them. It sounds like your LO is really hungy which could be why she is trying to get the formula out of the bottle so fast but ends up dripping it all out of her mouth. I know that mine does that sometimes too. She is 10 months now and weighs 20 lbs and is in 12-18 month clothing. She had a huge growth spurt between 4-5 months when all that was happening. She was wearing 3-6 months clothes then all of a sudden she was in 9-12 month by the time she was almost 6 months. I just kind of went with the flow when she was having her feeeding problem and fed her whenever she wanted, even if she just ate. Then at 5 months I started her on solids and this seemed to help too,

Oh and you might need to experiment with different types of bottles and nipples too.

Thanks, but I have already tried all (it feels like) the different bottles and nipples. My drawer is full of different ones. LOL. But thanks for the support......

How long has this been going on? Sounds like she's teething. Sometimes their gums hurt too much to suck properly or form a proper seal when they are teething. Give her plenty of things to chew on, even try something cool.

I'm having this same problem. My 4-month old son will only eat 4 ounces at a time, but wants 2 or 3 more about an hour later. He acts ambivalent about the bottle, too. He wants it, but then he shrieks when I put it in his mouth. Then, if I try the bottle again 20 minutes later b/c he's still fussy, he drinks like he's starving. I tell you, I can't figure the little fellow out! Sorry I've got no help, just sympathy. I do wonder if it's a teething thing, though. - April
