My son is 11 months now and we've been trying to transition him to a sippy cup. We bought the Nuby ones with soft spout. Well, he can drink out of it, but the flow seem waaaaaay to fast for him. He never moved past stage 2 nipples on his Avent bottles - stage 3 was just too fast for him. Now, when we try the sippy cups the formula flows down his chin on his shirt and he can't keep up with the flow. He throws his cup down, plays with it etc. but cries for the bottle. Also, he doesn't like juice - any type of juice - we've tried sevral flavours and he never took a liking to anything. He likes his formula very warm, so I tired to make juice warm too and still nothing. I'm worried that he's too dependednt on the formula - he wakes up around 7 in the morning, has a bottle and then falls asleep again until about 10 or 10:30. I tried keeping him up at 7, but he just falls asleep or is very crancky and rubs his eyes etc., which tells me he's just tired. I'm worried about his transition to sippy cup and milk, becasue I know milk is not as filling as formula, which is a meal in itself. Anyboby else has this problem? Anyone can offer advice? I need help please!! ↓
I wish I had some answers, but I'm in a similar boat. My 9 month old daughter is in sippy cup training too and also doesn't like fruit juices, unless we put it in her bottle. She'll drink water sometimes from a sippy, but usually only if she's reclined like strapped into her car seat carrier. She doesn't seem to understand she needs to hold it up and tip her head back a little. We also moved slowly through the nipple sizes, just putting her on stage 2 a week ago. I'll be reading the replies, hope you get lots of advice! ↑
I just give my youngest a sippie cup with water in it with every meal. He only gets bottles at bottle time (wake up, before morning nap, before afternoon nap and right before bed). At meal time (4 times per day) I give him the sippie with ONLY water. He loves it and I am having the opposite problem right now. He's 5 weeks away from his first birthday and he refuses to take the bottle. I wasn't going to take it away until his birthday, but I guess he doesn't want it anymore. Also-the straw sippies are my favorite! All 3 of my kids used them from 5 months old on. It's amazing how quickly they pick up using straws. I assume it's similar to the idea of nursing. Hope I can help. ↑
I am having a similar problem. I have 2 boys. The oldest will be 3 in December and the youngest is 13 months (born 5 weeks early). Anyhow, they are both late bloomers and it seems to take them a while to transition to a new skill. I get so frustrated sometimes, then I have to remind myself that it might just take them a little longer to figure things out! I'm trying to get my 13-month-old to transition from the bottle to the sippy cup. But he is very fussy about nipples! My other son was the same way! There are only a few types of bottles and sippy cups that he will use. I recently bought some beginner cups that have soft nipples, but he completely refuses them! There are only about 2 or 3 sippy cups that he will drink out of and so I am constantly having to wash them out! I keep trying, but after a few minutes of frustration and him crying and pushing it away, I finally give in and pour the formula in a bottle and then he drinks it! My other frustration is that I still can't get him on 3rd foods! He gags and chokes and acts like he is going to throw up! He only has 3 teeth (didn't get his first until 10 months, his second about a week before his birthday and the third a couple weeks later.) Do you think that he just needs more time to adjust to having teeth? ↑
hey ladies... well i started offerin a sippy with water to my daughter at 3 months old... and she loved it from the beginning... I did start her off wit the nuby ones because i thought it wouild be the easiest and she did fine but you are all right they flow too fast. I mean she figured it out but she loved making her self all wet and realized all the had to do was squeeze the spot to make it come out... so then i got the gerber graduates ones... they sell them at every store... they look like they are going to be hard spouts but they r not... but they also have a valve... which make it so the baby only gets as much as they want from the sippy... she loves this kind and it works amazing... she also has a few from avent... which is actually a hard spout with a valve and she does fine with that as well.... i started her off with water because i didn't think she was ready for juices yet... about five months i started givin her a sippy half water and half apple juice... she loves that kind of juice best... i only offer it to her once or twice a day because they say a baby doesnt need more then 4-8 oz of juice a day and other then the juice she is breast fed... and hopefully when she turns 1 i will be able to transition her from breast milk to the sippy instead of a bottle... good luck ↑
Teska...try Playtex. My son never really took to the Nubys...one worked for about a week until he decided he really did not like them anymore. I noticed they changed the spout on the Nubys from the first one I had boought. the second one just did not work well. Playtex, on the other hand....are awesome. They have sipsters in all sizes... I transitioned my son to sippys by circumventing the water altogether. I'd let him be good and hungry and would give the sippy then. He likes his formula warm too....but i noticed he doesn't mind cold juice or cool milk. Beechnut makes some pretty good baby juice/yogurt combos that have added fiber as well. I think your son is just frustrated with the sippy and might do better with a different kind of sippy. Try the two-handled sipster first...that's the earliest stage. Also...the playtex sippys leak WAY less than the Nubys did. Once your son gets used to the sippy...he will do what my son did and turn his nose to the bottle....bottle makes them have to work much harder. My son is a sharky little dude...he wants the MOST grub for the least effort...lol. Good luck!! ↑
thanks docbytch. i have to admit I got so frustrated with finding sippy cups everywhere full of formula that I just gave up. I went to the store to look at playtex ones and there are so many!! any specific ones that you'd recommend. The nuby's I got also have two handles, so I don't think handles are the problem. I think he still needs to figure out that he doesn't need to lie down to have a sippy, like with the bottle. When he lays down, he can't control the flow, where as if he sat up, he could just untilt the cup and it would stop dripping. We'll try again this weekend and see how far that will get us. ↑
Teska..if you want to start him on a soft[spout sippy that's more similar to the bottle....get the Playtex 'First Sipster" It's the only one with two handles in that whole line of sippys. All the playtex sippys use the same valvular system BTW. I started Derek on the first sipster....he progressed pretty rapidly. The only real difference in stages once you get to stage II (the harder spout) is the cup size. The IIs are about 7oz (are you canadian? it seems you might be by the way you spelled "flavours" ...thus oz may mean nothing to you)...the IIIs are 9oz. So either get "the first sipster" which is 2 handles.....or the stage IIs. They are easy to drink from...but just give hiim a little to start so he doesn't choke. If he's hungry enough at this age he should figure it out. But don't worry....my boy is awesome with food...but he doesn't talk yet lol. Babbly as heck...but no real words yet! JUST about walking... ↑
