i think i may have a breast infection ( i breastfeed) but i'm not sure. the other morning i woke up and it was really sore at the top and right hand side of my left breast. i was wondering what exactly it could be and if it could be cured at home or not? i don't have a family doctor,dd has a pediatrician.Even if he could do something, i just wouldn't be too comfortable going to him and otherwise i would have to wait 5 hours at a walk in clinic. I don't know if it matters or they are related but i also woke up the same day with a huge migraine. dd is 10 months so it can't be some newborn thing. ↓
Sounds like maybe a clogged duct. My doc told me to put a warm compress on the area and try to massage it out. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what it could be. I had mastitis when ds was 4 days old and let me tell you, you'd be way more than sore. I was in the emergency room bawling my eyes out when I had that. Also an infection usually comes with a fever. ↑
thanks!! i think you might be right then because it's mostly just when it's touched. i had a fever with my migraine the first night. i also felt cold, yet had a fever. it seemed to happen at the same time as the soreness. i never had any infections until now . The soreness isn't as bad as the very first day,but still there. This is about day 3. Anyone know how long it lasts for? Gabby, mastis sounds horrible! I'd no idea how much it hurt to have that. Sorry you had to go through that. ↑
Jenna, do you have a red spot anywhere on your breast? Did you have cracked nipples at all? Not that really want to hear my whole tale but I had the cracked nipples as well as a red spot (hot spot) and had to take antibiotics. I only had 1 night of cold chills and had to get dh to hold me, not that I minded! :) I never did check for a fever. I would call your ob and ask them about it. I have now been having after feeding pains so I have had another round of antibiotics, a diflucan pill (yeast infection cure) and I am using Dr Newman's cream on my breasts. Just call them and describe what is going on. Maybe they can call something in for you. Btw, my ds is 8 weeks. Good luck. I hope it gets better! Frances ↑
You won't necessarily know from the pain if it's mastitis. I have a high pain tolerance and didn't know I had mastitis for over a week. Even then I wasn't sure until I went to the Dr. I experienced a burning feeling and it was sort of like being engorged all the time. It started out seeming like my daughter just wasn't eating enough on one side and it was over-full. I had a fever for days, though, which is why I finally went to the Dr. and then when I was in the office I looked at my breast and it looked sunburned. That's the best way I can describe the redness. Also when I nursed my daughter it felt like she latched on wrong because it hurt in the nipple area. Mastitis won't go away on its own, you need antibiotics. ↑
Sarah21-what you described is thrush, not mastitis, I ve had those symptoms, sun burned like nipples, horrible pain, like a wrong latch... it is unbearable. I went to ER and they said I have mastitis, they had me take diflucon, i took it for a week and it didnt get a bit better, went to another dr who said its thrush (my baby had this about 3 wks before this happened, so i got it from him) she prescribed other pills and cream, in a day i already could feel the difference, in a week i had absolutely no symptoms and was back to my old self. ↑
No my nipples were not sunburned-looking, it was the rest of my breast tissue, which was mildly sore. It wasn't yeast related because the antibiotics took care of it within a day and they will make thrush (yeast) worse. ↑
