| Answer: I had a similar experience. I had a collection of blood behind my incision due to a drug interaction with my anticoagulent meds. The pain was amazing. Dr. did not believe me at first that I was in bad pain and nurses gave me more Motrin. The Dr. was eventually aware of this and removed a few staples, the blood gushed out. I bled for two weeks afterward- a lot of blood. I am now 5 weeks post c-section and "oozing" fluid that two drs. say is "okay".
I see other posts "When can I have sex?" and I think..oh my G** sex now? yeck!
I guess so long as you do not have a temp and no redness or swelling, you are okay. Personally I am not upset about hte emergency c-section, but am about my lack of healing at this point.
Sorry no real answers here, just plenty of co-sympathy.

| Answer: Hi Sarah, I had an emergency c-section 3.5 months ago to a beautiful baby girl. She was in the NICU for five weeks, and I ended up being in the hospital for two weeks due to complications with my incision. After a series of high fevers, high blood pressure, my incision popping wide open after the staples were removed, blood gushing out of it, a series of different techinques to "pack the wound", a second surgery to clean up the incision site, and a staph infection I finally got to go home (after which I had to report to the wound care center daily to get the wound packed). Blood did gush out of my incision a few times while I was still in the hospital. The nursing staff didn't seem to think it was a big deal. Just a pocket of fluid breaking open and releasing itself. It didn't hurt when it happened (anymore than usual at least). They called it a hematoma. I'm not a doctor and can't tell you if this is what you had... but it sounds similiar to what I had, so I hope this helps! = |
| Answer: I had a similar experience. However, my staples were removed 3 days after my surgery, my wound opened about 4 days after that. I was also in pain prior to the wound opening. When it finally opened I felt soooo much better.
The bummer was that I now had to have my wound packed and bandaged daily. The wound was 6 cm long and 3.5 cm deep. They also found a tunnel that was 5 cm long. The good news is there was no infection. The bad news is I'm still healing and have to schedule my day around getting my wound checked. It is however healing fairly well according to the nurses. They are packing it with a substance called Accticoat. They also encourage me to take Vitamin C, drink lots of fluids, and eat extra protein.
I was wondering if this could have been prevented if my doctors would have done something differently. = |
| Answer: Nearly four years ago, when I had my daughter, my incision opened up the day I got home from the hospital! Blood was pouring out of the incision so we went back to the OB and she cleaned it out and packed the wound. I had a visiting nurse twice a day to repack the wound which was very deep but not too wide and fortunately, not infected. The healing process put a bit of a strain on my first weeks home with my baby but after six weeks, I was healed. I think anyone who has incision trouble should definitely have their own OB/gyno look at it and not leave it up to ER docs. Also, this is just my opinion, but if you don't believe that things are ok when your doctor says they are, I think you should demand an explanation from your docs as to why it's ok for you to be oozing fluid after several weeks. With a new baby to care for, the last thing anyone needs is the worry that things aren't right. = |
| Answer: eek.. I had a section just 11 wks ago. i had no problems at all with my incision. I didn't think it was very common to have complications, but apparently it is..Sounds pretty scary and painful. I would definitely get my doctor to take a second look. = |
| Answer: take it easy. i hope you feel better. i am mother to nine children just had number 9 10 weeks ago by c section #3. so far so good but my recovery hard also. so much scar tissue caused my bladder to attach itslef to my abdomen wall so that was the most painful part. c sections are very scary and take alot of extra care so stay off of your feet don't do any stretching or pulling. regular take it easy stuff. hope you feel better. i'm trying to heal for number 10. jrae@aol.com = |
| Answer: I had a csection on 3-8-05 and 4 hours after coming home from the hospital ended up in the er with fluid running running out of my incision. The ER doctor told my OB that they should have left the stables in longer and admitted me. I stayed in the hospital until the next morning then my OB released me with more antibotics. They say as long as I am not running fever that I do not have an infection. I am so worried that something bad is going to happen and they are just letting me sit here. Has anyone else gotten a response from the OB like this? = |
| Answer: I had a c-section on 3-17 and spent the next four days in the ospital. On the third day my incision began leaking fluid and blood and I was told it was normal. Later that night it leakd more and dripped on the floor and ran down my leg. On the 21st I was due to go home with my baby, my staples were removed, I went to sit on the toilet and blood gushed out of my like a hose spraying. I must have lost two cups of blood. My OB came to see me and told me it as a hemotomia and that my leakage would taper off and sent me home. Four hours later I got up from feding my baby and felt blood running down my leg, when I went to the bathroom I sneezed, my incision burst wide open and my abdominal wall and bowel were visible. I was taken by ambulance to my econd choice hospital and underwent the most painful emergency surgery imaginable. This (I hope is an uncommon occurrence) but I would definitely get an OB opinion or if your case is lke mine and you are scared, GET A SECOND OPINION!!! Good Luck in future. = |
| Answer: Its been 6 months since my c-section and I still have an infection going thru a whole bunch of stuff right now meanwhile my ob says I was stressed wasnt infected, got a second opinion Mri and sure enough its still opened and infected. I have been feeling miserable for months now I know why = |
| Answer: I had a c-section on 3/31 a week later I was back in my OB's office w/ an open, infected incision. A few days later the other side of my incision also opened up. My husband is now packing it twice a day for me and I have to go see my OB every other day. She says it takes awhile because the opening must heal from the inside out. The packing takes away the pockets of fluid that are leaking out. Unfortunately, the openings must stop leaking entirely before it is healed. Apparently, this could go on for a long time. It's been over a week for me already and I am hoping it doesn't take too many more weeks. = |
| Answer: I had a c-section on 2/21/05, my incision opened and i had 3 openings inside- one was 9 1/2cm, 5cm, and 5cm, the nurse was out daily for 4wks, then my husband started packing it. after 8wks, i am done with the packing, but now the outside must heal, when i was at the doctor she "ruffed up the skin" she rubbed it with gauze until it bled then took twisser to "tweak" the skin, the outside is now started to heal. it has been a horrible ordeal, and i still have no idea why this happened. = |
| Answer: I had the same problem with my C section and had to have a home care nurse come in everyday to clean and change the wound. for 2 week then (My husband did it when she wasn't there) It took about a month to heal. I thought I was busting open everytime I moved but it healed pretty good thanks to hubby's care in packing. = |
| Answer: My baby girl was born on April 10th by c-section. A week later I woke up covered in body fluid and blood, we went to er and they said it was a good thing a pocket of fluid had developed and needed to drain. The following Monday I went to my OBGYN who packed it and said to take care of it twice a day. We are almost two weeks into the care and now it smells funny and must be scrubbed out 3 times a day with gauze and re-packed. The Dr. asked me to do it myself midday - but I tried to touch it and it scares me so much. I feel like passing out and just keep crying - I am very lucky I have a great husband who is doing the packing for me and will come home for lunch to do it. I am still scared and on antibiotics now - I feel mutated and like I am rotting inside. This has been so hard trying to be a new mom when you have this opening of about an inch and are worried about infection. Everyone seems to think it's no big deal, but for me its hell I feel completely unattractive and can not wait for this to be over. It has to heal from the inside out before it can be re-stitched. Thank you for giving me a forum to express this nightmare, it helps to here others have gone through the same thing. = |
| Answer: please go have it checked out...sounds bad, ima serious. I had a c-section and took a long time 2 recover but its been 8months..ima good since 2 months ago. I was sewed..dr. did a good job but my body was super weak i guess = |
| Answer: Tristian,
Hang in there, it took my wound 9wks to heal from the inside out. The smell may be the packing you are using, i was using Aquacell- and it smelled horrible, i will never forget that smell. are you taking pain meds before the packing. I found that it helped. write back and let me know how you are doing = |
| Answer: Thanks lisa - doing much better. Got re-stitched back up last week. Hopefully it will not re-open.
Again thank you to all - this forum helped so much! = |
| Answer: I am SO sorry to hear about what you had to go through. I had a c-section 5 yrs. ago and the same thing happened to me. It's an infection. On April 11th of this year I had surgery to remove adhesions from my previous c-section. (my uterus was attached to my abdominal wall, the surgery preformed was more or less another c-section) Well I started running a fever of 103.7 the night I came home from the surgery. Went back to the hospital and started gushing fluid again while I still had the staples in. It was another infection so the Dr. sent me back to the OR and opened the wound and cleaned it out. I have now been off work for two months with a hole in my stomach that has to be packed daily with quaze and Dakins solution (bleach and saline solution). There was tunning as well so the total size was 10cm long and 5cm deep. It started off taking 75 inches of quaze and now takes half that. This has been the most painful thing I have ever been through and I feel for all of you that have incountered the same pain. = |
| Answer: Same thing is happening to me. I delivered on 4-12-05, and my incision broke open 5 days after coming home. I am still draining fluid and blood. I have a nurse visit me once a day to pack the wound, and visit my OB once a week. It is so frustrating! The incision isn't healing and I'm really getting sick of having a hole in my tummy! It started of being 8.5 cm deep, and has only healed to about 5 cm, and now it has stayed there for over 2 weeks. I am just praying it will go away soon. The nurses are using some sort of alginate, made of seaweed, to pack it...no smell...so that's good. The thing I'm looking forward to when it's over is taking a normal shower! = |
| Answer: TO MN MOM-Hang in there same thing happened to me however, i had a hole that was 9.5cm to the right and 5cm to the left. it took 9wks of packing to heal-i know how frustrated you are. = |
| Answer: MN MOM-
How are you doing? is your incision healing? = |
| Answer: I had my incision open because of bleeding. And, I thought I was receiving poor medical care. Upon removing my stables, my Dr. noticed the blood clots and prescribed home nurse care which entitled a nurse to stop by my home everyday to stuff my incision so that it would heal from the bottom up, not allowing the incision to close until everything was clear and okay. I have to do this for at least a month. So far things are going good. I have one week left. = |
| Answer: This is actually happeneing to me right now. I had a c-section of 6/3, released on 6/6, had a checkup to remove the staples on 6/8. While the Dr removed the staples, my incision started to gush clear, then a little blood. It never healed where the staples were, but the fluid needs to drain. This happened to me the last time I had a c-section in 2002, where the stitches busted opened. I was given a antibiotic then, but not now...wonder why? I will certainly call my OB on Monday and request it. I go back on Thursday for a re-check. In the mean time, my husband is cleaning it out for me twice a day with a saline solution and peroxide...no packing needed. It is probably 1 1/2 inches wide and a little less than 1 inch deep. I get grossed out everytime I look at it...Thank God for hubby. He thinks it looks like it is healing from the inside out. Guess I'll know more on Thursday. It does help to know that this is more common than you think. I just wish it was over...I'm tired of freaking out about a hole in my belly and wearing a pad to absorb the fluid as needed. = |
| Answer: SS you will be okay. I thought i would never heal. I had my baby on 12/14/04 an my incission entirely heald about 9.5 weeks later. I know it is a long time. I was walking around with a pad on my belly for at least 6 weeks. I was discouraged and horrified.I thought nobody in teh medical profession cared. I think that incisions healing slowly is no big deal to surgerons. They really should explain this better to their patients. It is very frustrating and discouraging, I cleaned my incision 3-4 x a day with peroxide and a touch of neosporin at night. You will heal. it just take some of us more time than others ( I don't know why). Keep up the good work hubby! Check for signs of infection. I hated being so weak after the preg and the surgery, then the never ending incission. I felt depressed.Don't be afrade to ask for help around the house and with the baby, even if you are feeling "okay".This will help you heal faster. Hang in there. You will feel so much better soon, and you will start to really enjoy that baby of yours. Good luck. = |
| Answer: Sarah i had the same thing with my 1 and it ened having infection and they had to cut out a big chunk it healed and i had 2 more c-sections after that and going to have one in feb = |
| Answer: This is awful that so many of us are going through this or have gone through it! I have one more Dr. visit left (at least I hope this is the last one) next week. This has been a painful experience that I would not wish upon anyone. My incision is now granulated tissue so a couple more weeks and it should be competely gone. I asked the doctor why this has happened to me twice now and he said I am just not a good healer. Well the home health nurses said the hole in my stomache was healinf amazingly fast. I think there is a natural bacteria or something that we must carry that increases are chance for infection following an abdominal surgery, or knows this is just my opinion. Best of wishes to everyone with your recoveries. = |
| Answer: You know what makes me mad? i am mad that this is not discussed anywhere. They say you can get an infection, but some of us have had no infection and and went through this lengthly oozing process. Doctors fail to recognize that this is a problem for us and it is not only alarming, but affects how you feel direclty after you have the section and how you care for your baby.
I wish ther were more discussions on this so women would not feel so isolated when it happens.
Best wishes and happpy healing to all. = |
| Answer: I too had this happen to me. 2 1-inch sections popped open a day after having my staples removed. It scared me half to death as I thought my insides were coming out!! It was just fluid and no blood. I had a nurse come to the house everyday for 4 weeks, and she packed the opening with sterile gauze to let it heal from the inside outwards. It wasn't a fun experience. But, on the good side, my OB said that it was a good thing that it did happen, or I would have been placed in hospital with a drainage tube. Nature took care of it for me. I healed up fast with no other side effects. I had been on pennicilin for infection before I was released from hospital but it wasn't enough I guess. = |
| Answer: I am totally sympathetic as I had an emergency c section 10 days ago. Several nights ago I woke up with blood pouring out of my incision. Completely panicked at 3 am in the morning I went to the ER, where an ER Dr. and my OB examined me and I was told that the wound opening was fine, no sign of infection but that I had hematoma at the incision site that would likely clear up on its own. I was sent home with antibiotics to ward off any potential infection. Days later I am still bleeding quite heavily from the incision site with no change in the hard painful hematoma in my stomach. I hope the fact that your not alone helps you cope better. Good Luck! = |
| Answer: I am so excited, I am finally done with this whole mess. My last doctors appointment was today. The incision now looks like if you were to fall and scrape your knee. It is still a little sensitive but nothing like the it was. I wish you all the best!!!!!! = |
| Answer: I feel your pain as if it was mine again. I went through the same thing. I had my 4th section and had tubes tied. the staples were removed on day 5, went home and at about 11:30 i got out of bed and felt warm fluid and blood gushing out of my incision. I wert to the er and they put some packing in and gave me some oral abx. and sent home. Had a fever that night and was sent back to the er where I met the ob residents. They cleaned and rinsed the incisionl and then packed it with gauze. I also had the added problem of being allergic to the sticky stuff they put on you for bandages to stick. My incision was surrounded by red, swollen and itchy skin around the wound. Homecare came and changed dressings twice a day. the bandages would leak alot in bed and if i was out on an errand. Fortunately my incision did close up again. so it took about 6 weeks. Now, i have an added problem that the dressing changes caused. I had a pocket or tissue on my right side. and when the gauze was pushedinto that space it caught on to the clips they used to tie my tubes. My uterus is now pulled to the right side and is attached to my abdominal wall. I have horrible pain by the end of the day,. It radiatesto the back and its that pain you have with crampy periods. But other than that, I have no problems with the actual incision since its healed. good luck and remember that it will get better. My baby just turned 9 mos. on the 25 of june. Try and center on your baby and family and take all the help you can get. this is the time for you to take care of yourself by resting and being with your baby. Congratulations, it will heal and you will still have your beautiful baby. Oh, i read some stats reading that the opening of the incision is about 35%. = |
| Answer: My son was delivered by emergency c-section on May 28, 2005 and on the day we were due to come home (6/1/05) my incision began to become red and swollen. They took out the staples, gave me a bag of iv antibiotic and a prescription for oral antibiotics and allowed me to go home with the understanding that I needed to see my OB the next day. Well, by the next day, there was the hole about the size of a dime. OB said it looked fine and to just keep changing guaze as it oozed. Since I hadn't any fever he wasn't concerned. Well, that hole was the size of a quarter or so by 6/5 and there were other holes developing. So I was back to the office, where they "dehisted" the wound. My wound ended up being about 11cm long by 3 1/2cm wide with one very deep pit. They told me that 4 other women that delivered within the same 24 hours as me had this happen to their incisions too and so they were reporting it to epidimiology. So now I have the visiting nurse (at first 2xs now 1x each day) and back to my OB once a week (about an hour away). It has really been hard - I am on maternity leave and this is affecting my time with my son before I have to get back to work, it has hurt my milk supply and ability to nurse comfortably, it definitely has harmed my self-esteem because it makes you feel so disgusting - I don't want to look at me so how can my husband?! Plus I thought my troubles were over - when I was 15 weeks pregnant I had surgery to remove my left ovary because of a very large tumor that was discovered during my first ultrasound!
I did a lot of reading and research on pregnancy and childbirth and this was not a complication of a c-sections that I ever read about! With it being as common as it is they really should tell you more about it! And to think some women schedule a c-section like a pedicure! = |
| Answer: I had my c-section on 2/10/05 and my incision opened up two weeks after the staples were removed...I had something they called a seroma, and I have been healing for almost 5 months now. I have packed it with all types of meds and solutions, as well as with gauze soaked in a solution. My daughter just turned 5 months old and I still have a hole in my incision the size of a half dollar. The skin has yet to close. This is my second c-section and I had no problems the first time...I think that there was negligence in the procedure. I will never have another c-section. = |
| Answer: I had my 2nd c section on 6/7/05. Just withing the last 2 days do I feel the incison burning and stinging. I believe I may even have some oozing. Is this normal? I didn't have this with the first section...HELP = |
| Answer: I had the same thing happen to me. They bandaged me up, and have been checking on me every 2 weeks. It feels like it is burning. I really can't see it cause of my stomach being still swollen. But I got a mirror and looked at it. The skin is not completely closed so it is still open. I spoke with a nurse that I know and she said it take about 4 mths for it to completely heal. = |
| Answer: Wow!! I can't believe how many of us have had similar problems. On july 5th I had surgery to remove a cyst near my kidney. They went through my c-sectiion scar and extended it laterally. On the 13th when they took stiches out there was extensive hematoma and 6 cm opened up with a 3 cm tunnel. It had been oozing alot for a couple days. I now have daily home nurse visits. I am very excited about something called a wound-vac. I am supposed to get one tomorrow! I am told my wound may heal in 2-3 weeks and with better cosmetic results too! Has anyone else used this? I'll let you know how it goes. Best wishes to all for a full recovery.

| Answer: THIS HAPPENED TO ME!!!!! You are the first one I have heard of this happening!!! WOW! The night I was discharged, I was laying on the couch and reached for the remote! Fluid gushed everywhere! I went in and they opened it ALL THE WAY! Cleaned it out and stuffed it with gauze that was dipped in sterile saline. They must have put about 3 yards in! Then they covered it with a huge maxi pad and taped it to my stomach and said it would have to heal on it's own! It was a nasty huge gaping hole that went hip bone to hip bone and was about 3 inches deep! I changed the gauze 4-6 times a day and it took amost 12 weekd to close. When it did close there was a huge hotdog type lump that eventually went down and a bigger than normal scar. You can really see where I had the section and that was 6 yrs ago. The doc said it was a great thing that it poped open, because all that fluid would have pooled and become infected and it would have been bad! I'm so sorry. It will be a long recovery, but it will close. = |
| Answer: i had the same thing happen to me and leaded to 10 months of nurses attending daily to treat my wound it then closed but yestarday had opend up again phone the nhs and they said they cant do nothing :O = |
| Answer: You should have called your ob and he/she should have met you at the hospital to look at you. Something is definitely wrong if your incision opens up after 5 days. I had my staples taken out after 5 days and my incision was scabbed over after only 2 days, no reason for it to open. Call your ob and make sure they see you right away, they shouldnt have discharged you from the hospital if you were open. = |
| Answer: im am so frustrated at this point i gave birth by csection on 5-5-5 to a beautiful baby girl aislinn. well the day i went to discharge i fed her, stood up and out came gallons of blood and ooze...its now been three months of packing cleaning with dakins and using zerophorm to get it to heal...my wound has healed from 6 inches deep by 8 inches long to 5 inches long and 1cm deep but the problem is a wide patch that will not pull up to the top part of the incision i am a larger girl so they are blaming that... its summer i want to go swimming where i want to!!! not just be restricted to the ocean and private pools i want to exercise to lose weight... i have a odor coming from it and i feel so unnattractive my husband cleans it for me and i go to a wound clinic twice a week now which before was everyday then 3x a week with a 2 yr old and a 12 week old its getting annoying i want my life back now there trying to tell me i need surgery like a tummy tuck... does anyone think that this could be neglect??whos fault is this why are staples taken out 4 days later?this is the first time i have expressed my self about this situation because i dont know anyone who was going through this it frustrates me to see all these women having to deal with something that seemingly good be avoided am i wrong? = |
| Answer: I have been looking for answers for so long and I am so happy to find this site. I had the same thing happen in May of 04. It was terrible and my husband or my dad had to pack my wound 3x a day. No one had answers and my own doctor would say I had an infection and then another would say I did not but It opened do to a lot of fluid because of my emergency c-section. Did all of you have emergency c-sections? I am still having pain in the incision area a year latter and I can not get any answers. Just medication. Anyone else having pain after incision closes again? Is there a way we can contact eachother personally? I would love to chat with someone who has had the same experience and may have some information. The doctors seem to think the pain is from scar tissue. Pleas Sarah go to a doctor!!! You need to care for the incision. You could get even more sick! = |
| Answer: My e-mail-darlenemc@sbcglobal.net. Also I developed a hernia from the first surger and incision opening and had to have another surgery to "clean up the scar tissue" and fix the hernia. I thought the pain would go away after second surgery but same pain came back on the right side. I also had a tubal ligation with my c-section. PLEASE HELP! = |
| Answer: I had something called a seroma after my staples were removed after my c section. I had to pack the "hole" with special packing and flush it with a slat saline twice a day for the last 7 weeks now. the hole started out 4 inches long and 3 inches deep, here i am 7 weeks later its about 2 inches long and 1'4 in deep. The only pain i have felt with all of this was the tearing out of dry guaze before each dressing change. It's been hell but my daughter was worth it all. Good luck to you = |
| Answer: im not a dr shelly but my wound specialist uses a wet dressing called zerophyorm it really works its a yellow dressing that is coated in a lubricated pteroleum jelly like substance it cause no pain and you can buy it at walmart the dry dressing will continue to keep it open due to ripping the skin i would try that = |
| Answer: Lauren,
My hole has not healed up either and now we are on our sixth month. My doctor has stitched me, but it pulled apart and I still have seeping and an odor as well... I understand the not feeling attractive part. This has made my life a nightmare. The doctors act so nonchalant about it. They keep saying eventually it will close or I will have to go to a plastic surgeon. When I had my first c-section, the doctor sewed me up, no staples and I healed just fine. Where in the world can we go to find answers? I feel as if the doctors will never have an anser. I am terrified of plastic surgery. What if that doesn't heal? What I don't understand is how they will stitch up and close small wounds, but they will not do anything about a gaping hole in someone's abdomen. I hope someone out there has some way that we can be helped and made feel normal again. = |
| Answer: sherry,i totally understand your frustration here i am on my 3rd month and in 2 weeks im going to have a consult with a plastic surgeon i may have to have a tummy tuck...i think maybe you should get a second opinion are you seeing a wound specialist? i am and hes really great but doesnt have answers either just that it happens with repeat csections well i think they need to come up with a better way of closing again dont you i wish this never happened sometimes but then again its all worth it for my daughter...sometimes i wish my husband would understand how i feel unattractive though the seeping and smell may be called fat necrosis thats what is coming out of mine!! i would try teh xeroform it really works also i would try a dakins solution which helps with the smell its 500 ml of water remove 1 tbl sppon of water and add 1 tbl spoon of bleach not the floral stuff just plain bleach it works really well for the smell i clean mine 2x a day and when i cant get a chance too i can smell the differance it makes it feel alot better too...dont be scared of the plastic surgeon we as women have been through worse between pregnancy and this that you can get through more to get it fixed!!! so sherry where are you from im from rhode island if you want yo ucan email me Lm0982@yahoo.com
talk to u soon lauren = |
| Answer: Go to your ob/gyn ASAP! I had the same thing happen and had an infectio and 4 surgerys after I am ok. Watch for temp.
good luck = |
| Answer: I posted a while back and just thought that I would update everyone... My wound is all closed now and I am enjoying my time with my son immensely. I have a nasty scar and my stomach is far from normal looking. My niece calls it my "butt belly" because my scar runs down from my belly button to my pubic bone and creates a crater effect that makes it look like a butt crack LOL I can laugh a little about it now because I am just so happy the darn thing is closed and not oozing and that I don't have to plan my life around nurses and doctors!!!!!! Anyway, I am slowly starting to build up my stomach muscles and hopefully it will flatten out and look somewhat more normal and less like butt cheeks... every day I see a little more progress. If it stops to progress, I guess I will have to think about some sort of plastic surgery but the idea of anymore abdominal surgeries terrifies me! My husband and I will really have to consider which way we want to go for our next baby. With James I had 27 hours of labor that ended in a c-section and I think that maybe all of the iv fluids they pumped into are what made my wound explode. I was so swollen and full of fluid it had no where else to go but out of my wound, almost like cellulitis. So I would hate to do another long labor that ends in a c-section but I am terrified of c-section too now!!! It is a genuine Catch 22. I am starting to use the silicone pads on my scar to make it less purple as well. I still wish that someone, somewhere had warned me about this fairly common complication of a c-section! Doctors have an obligation to tell their patients of this! But if you are going through this right now, just know it will get better! Eat your protein, listen to your nurses and try to enjoy your baby as much as possible! Good Luck! = |
| Answer: Go back to the ER or call your doctor immediately. What you are experiencing sounds abnormal and potentially dangerous. If they tell you to go home, demand to see someone else. = |
| Answer: i had a similar experience. my wound opened and i had to be packed twice a day regularly till the doctor could sucher it up again. my husband says it has healed fine...however, are your c-sections slightly indented or depressed? just wanted to know if was the only one. = |
| Answer: My little guy is now 3 months old and my incision has healed. It did take almost 9 weeks to do so, but it is closed. The Dr did tell me that I will have a *dimple* where it opened then closed again. I guess that is what it looks like. My skin kind of dents in, only about 2 inches of it, where it originally opened. I can deal with that. It's not like anyone will really ever see it, besides my DH.
A word of advice that my Dr's did give me. When we would clean the incision, I didn't have to pack it. I was to use peroxide and saline solution, then wipe it with a sterile gauze pad. Sometimes that didn't always make it dry. He told me to use a blow dryer, on a cool setting, and blow the wound dry. Worked like a charm! I wonder if the skin is dry, is it possible that it heals quicker? Anyway, thanks girls. I am amazed to really find out how common this is. I have heard of 2 other people, who I know, having this happen to them since I have birth in June. Dr's should give us a more of a heads up. = |
| Answer: well i went to the plastic surgeon and he was planning on doing a modified tummy tuck but my insurance company wont pay for it so he has now decided to have skin graft surgery and im totally opposed to it i just dont know what to do!!!! anyone out there please help i feel like all the drs are handing me off to each other and they all are dumbfounded on what to do!!! = |
| Answer: My daughter is now almost 8 months old and still no closure to to my wound. I have done everything to get this to close up and have decided that I am done trying. I will never have another abdominal surgery, nor will I trust anyone who says that 8 months later that it will take time to heal a wound. Would they let a gaping hole stay open on somebody's arm for months and months? Somehow I doubt it. I have absolutely no faith in any physician at the moment. = |
| Answer: Try going to an infection control Dr. If it isn't healing then you may have another problem. They had to take me back into surgery and sew me up and then after 2 more weeks i closed all the way up. Don't give up! I have had 4 surgerys in the last 1 1/2 months and no how you feel.

| Answer: hello...i am a wound care nurse so i wanted to pipe in....a few questions for you...how open are you, do you know the measurements? also, are you packing it with saline gauze or med. have you had any signs of infection in there? has anyone taken a culture? it is actually better to leave the wound open then for it to heal unevelnly that is when you get hernia's and weaker abdominal walls.....but 8 months seems extreme....who monitors you? do you go to a doctor regularly? = |
| Answer: Thank you for the encouragement, Heather. I keep praying that this will one day be over.
In response to the wound care nurse, I have taken many measurements. Right now, the hole is about 2 inches long and as wide. That seems small, however, it started out about half the size of the total incision area. I did pack it with some wound gel and gauze to keep it open to let it heal from the inside out. I then cleaned it with Dakins solution for several weeks. From there, I was stitched. In the meantime, I had another area open up on the farthest side of my scar. I couldn't believe it. That finally closed up in about a months time. Finally, the stitches dissolved and about 1/3 of the area had healed. My doctor has not planned anything else for me besides seeing a plastic surgeon and I simply do not trust that having another surgery in that area would ever heal. My doctor keeps telling me that it has healed to the top, but the skin is simply not closing. I am just not sure what to believe. I can not believe that there isn't a way to heal this up and get it to close permanently. = |
| Answer: if i were you i would seek either a wound care facility or an infectious disease doctor....and talk to someone about a wound vac....it is a pain in the butt but it would get you healed nice and even...if you have any questions feel free to ask:) = |
| Answer: I sure do feel for you. My opening was about the same but also had a smaller opening on the left side. My 2nd surgery was to open up my insision and do deep packing. Then my 3rd surgery they cleaned it out more and removed some blood clots and stapled me back up. The 4th surgery was to stich what didn't close. They had to pack me between all of this. Have they done a full blodd work up on you? I had an infection that wouldn't go away. It was resistant to many drugs so it's important that they get you on the correct one. Please watch for a temp? Keep after your doctors to help you. I am just so sorry that you have had all this happen to you. = |
| Answer: Hi. I have had similar problems recently as all of you have. I don't know what to think anymore. I had my daughter by c-section on 7/16/05. Seven weeks later I ended up in the ER with a huge egg sized pouch bulging from by incision. An OB/GYN doctor in the ER opened it up with a Q-tip by poking it and tons of fluid and blood came gushing out. There was so much inside that it went all over me and the bed. It was disgusting, but I felt instant relief. I had it packed for one week and then by OB doc told me he wasn't going to pack it anymore because it would take must longer to heal that way. I kept going to him every other day to check it while it was draining. It seemed to heal nicely. This morning I woke up and noticed there is a different hole in my incision now bleeding. I don't know if another hematoma has formed or my incision has opened up. I can't understand why this is happening ten weeks postpartum. It's radiculous. It's been so long, you might think I was healed by now. I just don't know what to do anymore. I am going to the doctor today at 215 to see what he says now about his new hole. I appreciate any advice that anyone has for me. = |
| Answer: Jen, Make sure your doctor is doing lab to check for infection. I hope he puts you on a big dose of cipro or something. Good luck! = |
| Answer: Hi Heather. Thanks for responding. Sorry, I forgot to mention some things before. My daughter was fussing and I was trying to hurry. I was on an antibiotic for about 12 days, then my doctor said I didn't need anymore because there was no infection. They did take a culture of the wound in the ER that night and I am going to ask my doctor about the results. He did say that I had a hematoma that had formed, but no infection. He told me that it was very unusual for a hematoma to from seven weeks postpartum, but didn't mean it was anything serious either. We'll see what he thinks today. This new hole is right next to the one that just healed up. Maybe it's just my incision that has opened. I don't know. Seems strange to me that it would open affter ten weeks. The whole thing is driving me nuts. I just want to be healed and move on. = |
| Answer: Hi there I had my son on 9/20 and I had my incision opened back up on 9/30 because of a seroma or collection of fluid behind the incision. When they did the c section on me they gave me a pain ball which is a catheder directly run into the incision with a tiny wire similar to an epidural and it released medicine regularly. It bugged me and I had it removed but it made the incision have more drainage than I would have had normally. If I hadnt had this they may have noticed the seroma at the hospital but I had it removed right before discharge. I leaked fluid for another four days after I got out then it really stopped. I had a cm long part of the incision that looked like it wasnt closing like the rest and I noticed a tiny bit of yellow stuff on the outside. I thought it may have been tape residue so I cleaned it really well then looked at it the next afternoon. It was back so I figured it was infected. I went in to the clinic and they found the seroma. she dis a bit of pushing and poking and fluid poured out. The doc says it happens about 1 in ten c sections though its not mentioned much. She said blood vessels contract when they are cut and as they begin to relax they flood the wound with blood and fluid and it does not allow the wound to heal inside though the outside of the incision looks like it had. The tunneling others have mentioned is where the blood pulls apart more of the incision from the pressure of the liquid. The pooliung of fluid often leads to infection if not treated. She said old treatment was to do wet to dry dressings three times a day. They reopened my incision as far as the tunneling had gone (about 5cm) as part of my incision had begun to heal properly. They cleaned it and abraided it a bit to get the blood going I assumed. They packed it with Calcium Alginate which is synthetic seaweed. It forces the fluid out of the wound and allows healing inside. I have to go back on Monday to have it redressed and packed. They sealed it with what looks like the clear plastic they overlay IV needles with but bigger. I have to wear pads over it as it leaks out the edges of the plastic and it soaks the pads too. I gathered from reading my doctor was better at explaining it than some of you other ladies docs were. My biggest concern is how long its going to take to heal and if the scar will be painful. I am so full of stretchmarks I dont really care if its ugly. I hope this was is or will be helpful to anyone going through this right now. = |
| Answer: Megan, Thanks for all the good information. As far as the healing goes.....my doctor said that it may hurt for a few months to several months. The good news is that I thought I would have a bad scar but after healing mine lookes good. Good luck with everything. It sounds like you have a really good doctor. I didn't undersatand why I got the infection untill after ready your story. thanks... = |
| Answer: This is all so horrible! I had 4 sections and while I had horrendous and dangerous bleeding, hypotension and one uternine infection I have NEVER heard of open wounds lasting for months. Knowing this I can't imagine anyone CHOOSING a c-section, WOW. Hope you all are finally healing. = |
| Answer: Hey Sarah. I had a c-section almost 3 weeks ago. A week after I came home (which was about 10 days after the c-section) I had blood suddenly coming out of the left side of my incision. I rushed to the hospital and the doctor checked me. He said i had alot of bad blood inside that needed to come out, and so therefore it was "normal". Then he spent about half an hour pushing blood out of my incision to make sure to take it all out. I bled a tiny bit for the next 2-3 days, and now everything is fine. Maybe you were doing a little too much which caused the incision to open. Heres a tip. Check the color of your blood. If its blood red then I dont think its as "normal" as the doctors make it seem. If its a dark red, as mine was, then maybe it really is bad blood that needs to come out to prevent any blood clots from forming and also to prevent infection. Good lucK! Dont stress yourself too much, it only makes things worse. = |
| Answer: Yes It happened to me in a way
I had my son , repeat section, and was closed with staples instead of stitches like the 1st surgery. I was in inscrusating pain for the week they were in, swelled up, area turned bright red, couldnt hardly stand up from sitting position. When the staples were removed I had to be held down it hurt so much. As soon as they were removed I was pain free. But I had to let it heal from inside out--- I went 9 months with pain, not able to get it like wet other than washing it (burned so bad) then when 9 1/2 months came I had to go into surgery and have the area around it cut and "redo" the closing..... now my tummy is a little uneven. = |
| Answer: Hi everyone! It is common to get a hematoma after any kind of surgery which is simply a collection of fluid (serum) and blood. That's what I was told that I had at first, though it was very strange that mine didn't appear until eight weeks postpartum which is very uncommon... Well, I went for a second opinion on Friday because I am 11 weeks post a C-section and my incision is still open in two places, well anyway, the doctor told me that I had an infection (staph aureus) from my c-section. It hasn't been very fun and a very long summer. I took Dicloxicillin for ten days and that's when I finally started to feel myself again. Hopefully now I am on the road to recovery. It's very ackward to have two holes in your abdomen. Cant' wait for them to close. The doctor that was telling me it was a hematoma was just covering his butt because he assisted in my c-section. He knew all along I had gotten an infection. I thought it was strange that he wanted me to continue the antibiotics seeing as though he kept telling me it wasn't an infection... you have to watch out for doctors sometimes.. The best thing that you can do is get a second opinion from a doctor that had nothing to do with your surgery like I did. That way you get a real honest opinion of what is going on. Hopefully, these holes close now and I heal. = |
| Answer: Me again. It's been not even a week since I saw that new doctor. Since I saw him, the hole that had closed has reopened and the new hold in my incision is even bigger. I just don't get it. I feel like I am going backwards instead of getting better. They are both bleeding now. May it's all part of the healing process, but I doubt it. My daughter is 11 weeks now. I am so tired of all of this. I just want to heal. I am calling the doctor tomorrow to see what he says. = |
| Answer: My doctor ended up, after waiting 9 months to heal, sending me to a general surgen that did wound closeures. That is who fixed me, removed part of the skin too test to see why it didnt close properly. Save yourself time..... once the baby is out if t dont close right- everyone points fingers so just find a good genereal surgen and go for consult. I wished I had earlier. = |
| Answer: Hi Sonia, Thanks for the advice. Did you have the same kind of problems I am having. The holes are actually looking a little better to me today. I am going to watch it through the weekend. They actually look like they are finally closing. = |
| Answer: Yes mine healed up to two holes one on each side about 3 n long. then one side closed and not the other for some reason that is the side that didnt close. it remaided about 3 in long til it was closed by the surgen. = |
| Answer: Hi Jen, I also had bledding from both of my openings. I wasn't healing either and so my doctor went in and cleaned me up and then stitched it again. It still didn't heal up all the way but it helped. One thing that did help me is a powder that they gave me and it helped to keep it dry. I hope it heals for you soon. = |
| Answer: Are ANY OF YOU ever letting them do a c-section on you again? I was thinking about asking for one in January, but never mind! I'll take some tearing and an episiotomy, thanks! I had a vaginal 2 years ago and it took a month or 2 to heal, but nothing like this! = |
| Answer: Some doctors don't like to do a VBAC. Other doctor will let you try it. It all depends. I would love to have a vaginal birth for my next one because of everything I have been through. It hasn | | | | | |
