should my newborn be straining to poop?

Hi everyone. I have a 3.5 week old. I was mostly breastfeeding for the first two weeks and was supplementing with alimentum due to possible allergies. We recently switched over to the walmart gentle formula and I stopped breastfeeding about 4 days ago. My son is now straining to poop and some of his poops are harder and formed (although the next time he poops, it could be compeltely normal). Anyway, is this normal? Could it be from switching over formulas and ending breast feeding? Is he too young to have a laxative like miralax?

Hey, how are you doing?? The pooping issues are most likely formula related and the fact that you just switched, makes me think that is definitely the problem. Is he getting upset when he tries to poo? If not, then he will probably work it out on his own. However, I would probably call the pediatrician and see what you can give him. My son will be 5 weeks on thursday, and hasn't had a problem, but our daughter had a horrible time with constipation. Our pediatrican had us put Karyo Syrup in her bottles, disolved in warm formula. It really worked and she liked the sweet taste. It takes a few feeds before it starts to work, and it is better than using a medication. Your pediatrican, or nurse should know how much you should put in your little man's bottle per feeding. There are two different types on Karyo Syrup, brown and clear, and they sell both at any grocery store. I hope this helps.

Hi mjvdec01. I am well. My son will be 4 week on Friday, so just slightly younger than Nate. The second time around seems so much easier, which I am grateful for. I'm hoping Ryan's poops return to normal witin a few days as he adjusts to the formula. OUr first son also has trouble with constipation, so this isn't really a surprise.

Well, I experienced the same thing... My Ped said it was the iron in the formula. I was told to add more water and alittle less formula and my twins were fine.

Some straining is normal. The formula will make their poop more solid but it should still be like putty in consistency. If they are straining and their poop is like hard rabbit pebble poop then they are constipated.

BTW MsMonet I don't know why your doc would give you that advice. There is a reason by formula companies give specific directions as to the amount of water vs formula. If you add less formula they will be getting less calories. IMO always measure out one scoop for every 2 oz of water.
