Question: I am not pregnant right now. I want to get a tattoo on the lower part of my back. I have heard that during labor if you have a tattoo on the lower part of your back or on your stomach, and you take drugs to help the pain, the drugs ruin the tattoo. is that true? ?

Answer: I have a tattoo on the lower part of my back, and my stomach, and I'm pregnant, and they're are just fine. Just keep vitamin e on them. =
Answer: Actually, I have heard that if you have a tattoo on the lower part of your back, in the "injection" site (for an epidural) that they will NOT administer you the epidural if you indeed want one. Apparently the ink can get into your blood stream and cause infection. This is just what I have been told. =
Answer: You can get an epidural if you have a tattoo there, with no problem. =
Answer: No That is not true. It may stretch mine did but it went back to normal. =
Answer: I also heard that about epidurals and tattoos and I asked my doctor and she said it's not true at all.I have a tattoo on my lower back and I'm planning for an epidural =
Answer: Got a epidural on the 28 of june when I gave birth to my daugther ......and it didnt work .the only thing it did ....i dont have any sensation anymore on my right hand .......2 of my fingers are numb.....since I gave birth .......as for the ink that might get into your blood stream ...its already IN your blood stream .......getting a tatoo always get ink in your blood stream ......and you havent died yet .havent you? =
Answer: That is untrue I also have a tatoo on my lower right stomache , although it did stretch and it has two stretch marks in it and it doesn't look as good> =
Answer: I have a tattoo on my stomach, when I was pregnant, it barely stretched out, but when right back down. =
Answer: the only thing that ruins your tattoo is the stretching of your skin. the drugs don't do a thing to your tattoo. After you go back to pre pregnancy size, you're tattoo will look faded. that's all. I have one on my back and nothing has happened to it because I carried all in the front =
Answer: I heard the same thing about tattoos. I heard from a nurse that the doctor WILL NOT issue the epidural at all if there is a tattoo present in the injection spot. However, as someone else said, the ink is already in your bloodstream so, tecnically I have no Idea!!! Sorry!! =
Answer: I ALSO HEARD THAT THEY WONT GIVE YOU AN EPIDURAL IF YOU HAVE A TATTOO ON YOUR BACK, I AM PLANING ON GETING A TATTOO ON MY LOWER BACK AND I DO PLAN TO HAVE A CHILD WHEN I AM READY, SO I HOPE THAT ITS A LIE ABOUT THEM NOT GIVING EPIDURALS TO WOMEN WHO HAVE LOWER BACK TATOOS,BECAUSE IF IT IS TRUE....OH LORD PLEASE BE WITH ME, BECAUSE ITS GOING TO HURT!!!!!! =
Answer: i got a tattoo and a stretch mark went right through it during my first pregnancy and so my tattoo is ruined and looks aweful but the one on my lower back is unscathed =
Answer: I have one on my lower back and I just recently had the epidural. all that about tattoos and epidurals arent true. but stretch marks could ruin it and I would wait till after the pregnancy to get one. Also im not sure if it would do any harm to the fetus to get one while preggo =
Answer: i don't think that it would ruin the tattoo becasue it is on your skin not some marker that comes off with water so no i do not think that when you are pregnant that it will ruin it when you take drugs! =
Answer: If you are worried about the stretch marks you can always have your tattoo touched up. then it will be back to new! im planning on getting one on both my lower back and lower stomach, and to have a kid, if they get messed up i will just have them fixed :) =
Answer: can i get an epidural if i have a tattoo on my lower back
?
=
Answer: I heard that if your pregnant and you have a tattoo on your lower back you cant take drugs =
Answer: Jamie and Janet-there is no truth in that. you CAN have the epidural. i asked my doctor, plus I had one with a tattoo on my lower back =
Answer: I dont think the tatoo will be effected by drugs, only by stretching. I have a tatoo on my lower left stomach/hip I was wondering if it stretched would it go back to normal size? =
Answer: is it safe to have an VBAC if you have had to c-sectons =
Answer: depends on for what reason you had the sections, and if you can find a doctor who is good and willing to do it. =
Answer: you can get an epi even with a tat, my tat was in the exact spot but they gave me mine. I have 4 tats, none r ruined =
Answer: I have a tattoo on my lower back and have had it for over 6 years. In June 2003 when I delivered my son, I tried to get an epidural and they attempted 3 times and it didn't work! Since then though I have been diagnosed with spinal cord lesions a symptom of MS. I'm an RN and would really like to see more research into this. Could there be a link? =
Answer: I have a lower back tatoo and I had an epidural durring my delivery and I had no porblems. Its all a load of crap. =
Answer: There's new findings now that says that if you have a lower back tatoo, most doctors refuse to give you epidural. Thats because it not only would give you the risk of infection through the ink of the tatoo but also increase the risk of paralysis. =
Answer: I have a tatoo on my lower back and i am 38 weeks. My doctor suggested and epidural so i think that is a myth. =
Answer: im 18 and thinking about getting a tattoo near "groin" area, i dont really know what its called. its way below my belly button, and more to the side towards my leg. if i ever get pregnant is this a spot that will ruin the tattoo? i hope someone can help.. =
Answer: Ok, a little bit of a naive question but here it goes...
We've been trying to get pregnant for a few months, I think I may (and I say may because we all know how we create sympotms when our hopes get up) have had some symptoms of implantation the past couple of days. I'm supposed to go get my newest tattoo coloured in today. Safe or not safe? THanks for your help! =
Answer: I have a tatoo on my lower back and the doctor told me that i can not get an Epidural due to the risk of infection from the tatoo. =
Answer: i also heard that you can't have the epidural but a lot of people also say that you can have it. I'm woundering if it depends on the size of your tat. who knows. If you really want to know just ask your doctor and they'll tell you. That's probably the best thing to do. =
Answer: have any of you thought about what it may do to the baby? =
Answer: I think what it comes down to is that it's different for everyone. Yes, there's a huge possibility and even certainty that your tattoo will stretch with pregnancy. Maybe for you it will return to normal, there's no way to tell.
As far as epidurals, it's been proven an urban legend, but one that's so convincing, some idiot nurses and other medical professionals believe it. Epidurals don't interfere with the tattoo site and are just as effective. The ink is already in your blood stream, so the argument that administering an epidural could make it be there is ridiculous. I don't know how shots make ink go into the bloodstream, but that's just wierd. =
Answer: I'm dying to get 1 tattoo about the size & placement of an ovary, but I am oncerned about the effects pregnancy with have on the design. I am wanting a circle shaped-design & dont want to end up with an oval after the baby... Its just that I dont know how much stretching even does on down there. Help, Rachel =

Answer: I had an epidural and have tatoos on my back. not at the injection site but close and the drugs did nothing to hurt it in any way. Plus my dad is an anestheologist...the ink isn't water it woln't get in your blood stream and kill you and the drugs they inject are in a needle, they don't touch the skin. just make sure your tatoo is healed. you'll be fine. =
Answer: no that is not true but some women who have tattoos on the lowerback can not have epidurals. =
Answer: If you have a tattoo on your lower back, receiving an epidural WILL put you at risk for infection and in worst case scenario, paralysis. If you inquire about this with any credible doctor, he will tell you the same and those who do not want take such risks will not perform the epidural if you have a tattoo on your lower back. =
Answer: For Erica: It's the epidural that puts you at risk for infection/paralysis, not a tattoo. Any credible doctor will tell you that...and they make you sign a paper stating that you are aware of the risks of an epidural before you get it. =
Answer: i do not know if that is true but i do know that the tattoo will stretch out but you can always get it fixed up. =
Answer: A tattoo will not be ruined by an epidural or pain relieving drugs and a tattoo does not increase the risk of infection. Where do people read this rubbish. It's only a tattoo fgs. The tattoo may stretch depending where it is but this is caused by being pregnant and your tummy growing. My sister has a dolphin tattoo on the tummy and it looks ok since she had the baby.
An epidural is actually placed higher than the base of your back, I'd say it's more towards 1/2 way up and the ink gets into your bloodstream while your having the tattoo so it's not going to make a difference if it get's in during epidural placement. =
Answer: can you get a tattoo while your pregnant? will your baby get damage by it? =
Answer: I think anything like getting a tattoo that exposes you to the risk of infection / contamination with a dirty needle, is better off waiting till you've given birth. Germs or viruses could get into your bloodstream and possibly affect your baby. =
Answer: I'm16 years old and I'm 6 months pregnant. I wanted to know is it okay for me to get a tattoo while I'm pregnant or is it best to wait until the baby's born? Will getting a tattoo while I'm pregnant harm my baby in any way? =
Answer: Drugs will not ruin the appearance of your tattoo. The only thing with pregnancy that will ruin the tattoo is it will fade and your tattoo will stretch out and may not go back to the way it was. But as for drugs... nothing will happen to your tattoo. Just be careful and don tget your tattoo while yoru pregnant, the ink can get into your blood and harm your baby. =
Answer: i have never heard of not being able to get an epidural if you have a tattoo on in the injection site. When you get a tattoo you are getting ink into your bloodstream anyway.. you can bleed quite a bit when you get a tattoo. That said, if you have a lower back tattoo.. your epidural is more middle to upper back so don't worry. i have a lower back tattoo and my epidural wasn't even CLOSE to where it is. =
Answer: If you have a tattoo and it stretches out cant u get that mederma stuff to put on it? =
Answer: alright, so, it seems like there are quite alot of different views on this whole epidural with a tattoo thing. truth is ladies, you can have an epidural if you have a lower back tattoo, yes, EVEN if the needle passes through the ink, the ink will NOT be pushed through into your spine it stays within your layers of skin. Now, some doctors dont fully understand the world of tattooing, and some may never...you see tattooing is such a grey area and although they may be excellent at delivering children they are clueless to the facts of inking. as for the streching of tattoos during pregnancy, there really isnt any way to avoid that, yes vit E may help but once that ink under your skin streches, its very unlikely it will go back to looking the same. Many shops though do and can cover existing tattoos and many of you may consider finding a new tat to completely cover your old one.

Answer: I'm trying to have a baby and I have two tats one on each of my hips on my back. do you think it will stretch them out if i get pregnant? =
Answer: not true, I have a tattoo on my lower back right on my tail bone and never had a problem with getting an epidural or the epidural ruining the tattoo, I have had 2 epidurals. =
Answer: I had a piece of hip bone removed in 97',then got a tattoo to cover up the scar.In 02' I had my daughter and only got stretch marks that seemed to branch off of my tattoo on my hip.So I went and got my tattoo touched up and added onto, and you couldnt even tell there were stretch marks.Well, I'm 38 weeks now,and once again stretch marks branching off of the tattoo, and now on the other hip also.So Im already visiting the tattoo shop to see new art. =
Answer: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant also I know a girl who tanned in tanning beds throughout her pregnancy. Are tanning beds considered safe during pregnancy?
=
Answer: I think the only think you have to worry about is it stretching. It may not look the same once your skin gets back to normal.. but that's just a guess. =
Answer: I have nine.. and 3 on my back and a giant dragon on my spine... where they put the epidural... and it still looks better than ever...4 years 2 kids =
Answer: Nope. Had an epidural with my tattoo. The only thing that happened on my back were a few stretch marks but even they faded. Plus all tats have to be touched up every once in a while. =
Answer: Can i get a tattoo even though i'm 4 and half months preganant =
Answer: To Rachel--Most places will not give you a tattoo if you disclose that you are pregnant. If it were somewhere like your arm or something I don't think I would even tell them. They don't do this because it's dangerous but because they don't want to be liable in case something happens. Same as with hair salons, we cannot give chemical treatments to women that are pregnant, although it's never been proven to be dangerous to receive a color or perm every few months while pregnant. It's just a precaution many places such as this take in order to prevent law suits. But if you are going to get a tattoo somewhere on the torso region, I would wait until after the baby is born--because you could develop stretch marks that ruin the fresh ink. =
Answer: curious--read just above you and you have your answer. :) =
Answer: I use to volunteer in the operating room of a hospital. I also have a tattoo on my lower back and I brought up the question of getting an epidural with many of the doctors/surgeons in the lunch room. Half said it wasn't a good idea and the other half said it's safe. It just depends on the doctor. I'm nine months pregnant now and if they doctor that delivers me says no to an epidural, I will just ask him about proof of it being risky. =

I have been doing tattoos for over 15 years, and I hope that you will listen to what I say here.and if you have any more questions please feel free to email me tattz77@yahoo.com.........
1---you are NOT at risk of infection because you have a tattoo, when you get an epidural.the epidural itself is what runs you a risk of infection, just ask your doctor !!!
2---everyone is different.some peoples tattoos stretch out and stay a little messed up,and some don't.
3---I DO NOT suggest getting a tattoo if your pregnant, simply because you CAN wait. Why run the risk?is it really worth it?
4---sometimes doctors act like they know about tattooing because it is close to a surgical procedure.but they only know how to be a doctor(hopefully a good one)........

Answer: Is it fine to get a tattoo while you are pregnant even though you might not be that far along? =
Answer: I have a large tattoo on the lower part of my back. I ended up having a c-section and when they did the spinal, they said that it would actually help in finding the epidural spot, so no it is not true! =
Answer: BROOKE
I have a tattoo on my lower back and I was told that I have nothing to worry about from my doctor. I could also depend on the size of the tattoo you want to get, mines a chines symbol so its not very big, but if its a big tattoo and take up alot of the lower back, chances are you wont be able to get the drugs. Also, It doesnt hurt your tattoo because they dont place the needle into the tattoo for fear that ink could get into the bloodstream.
=
Answer: can you get a tatt when you're pregnant? =
Answer: No you cannot...the ink from the tattoo goes into your system and it may harm the baby. =
Answer: Okay I have a tat on my lower back and it was just a little harder for the anesthsiologist to find the correct spot for the epidural, but I did have one. So yes you can get an epidural with a tat. Answer to #2 yes you can get a tat while being preggo. Only if the artist goes too deep will it really get into your blood stream. Dont worry about that at all.i think a lot of people are misinformed. =
Answer: I was wondering if anyone else has gotten a tattoo while they were pregnant and if it was OK. I just found out I was pregnant a week after I had already started a full back piece, and I would like to get as close to finishing it as I can if it won't hurt anything. =
Answer: How long should I wait after a tatoo to get pregnant and be safe? =
Answer: can you get a tatto while you are pregnant =
Answer: i have a tattoo on the bottom of my back and nothing happen to it. they still gave me an epidural even though i have a tattoo. =
Answer: please take this question off of here .
you're confusing people!!!!!!! =
Answer: Not true at all! Tattoos become permanant after about 2-3 weeks. If you go in salt water, put things on them that your not suppose to etc during those 2 -3 weeks, it will ruin them. I have several tattoos and none were ruined by the drugs for labor pains, epidural etc. =
Answer: No that is not true. I have a sun on my lower back and had it before my first child. The doctor who did the drugs thought it was really cute and actually administred the epideral through the middle of it and it still looks the same as when I got it 5 years ago =
Answer: I have heard that after two years of getting a tattoo in the lower back that is fine to go on through with an epidural. =
Answer: No, tattoos are permanent. There is nothing during labor that could ruin your tattoo. I think what you are referring to is an epidural, where the dr inserts a needle into your back, but this would not affect your tattoo in any way. As for getting one on your stomach, it would stretch a great deal during pregnancy, and depending on stretch marks, may or may not ever look the same. But I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you ever do have a baby, you will love your baby way more than the tattoo!! =
Answer: I had a baby 2 weeks ago. I have a tattoo on my lower back and I had an epidural. The anesthesiologist didn't say one word about it. =
Answer: It dose not miss up your tatto! if you needed more information e-mail me at cakefrosting4life@yahoo.com =
Answer: I just want to say something to the people that are asking about 'if you have a tattoo on your lower back are you still able to have an epidural.'
I dont know the answer to that and i was wondering that myself seeing as im getting a tatoo there in 2 days. But I think you shouldnt leave a comment if you dont know the real answer. Saying "I heard..' is just adding to the myth and not helping any. If youve been through it and know first hand what really happens then you should go right on and tell us so we can get things straight. But to the other people. thats how myths grow and we'll never get the turth of it if everyone puts in their..'.i think this is what happens, i heard this is what happens.' =
Answer: I talked to a labor and delievery nurse today about the tatoo on the lower back thing and she said that it doesn't matter at all. She said she had given quite a few girls with tatoos on their lower backs epidurals. She said it doesn't even matter if the needle has to go through the tatoo, it is no problem. =
Answer: i have a tattoo below my back. and asked the nurse if i can have an epidural and she said, oh yah defiently. so i had NO problem with it. my tatty still the same. nothing on it as i mean stretchmark and stuff =
Answer: i have a huge tattoo on my lower back and i had an epidural, it did nothing to my tattoo, and the needle did in deed go directly into my tattoo. =
Answer:
I have several tattoos, The one on my lower back is fine epidural and all. Now for the one on my abdomen...it was a perfect tribal bat (the ones that fly and screech in the night) and the pregnancy with my son destroyed it. It looked like a big blob till I had it retouched. It looks a lot better but I'm still not satisfied. I'm probably going to get it removed and redone. =
Answer: I have a full back piece tattoo and gave birth to a healthy baby girl in 2003, with the help of an epidural. My tattoo looks the same as it did before pregnancy and the epidural. =
Answer: Ok, the reason there are so many conflicting views on here is because all doctors are different and have different opinions. Doctors are in a field where they kind of get to make their own rules, not on all things, but some things. Some doctors believe that giving epidurals when there is a tattoo in the way is fine and they will give you an epidural no questions asked. On the other hand you may get a doctor who believes that giving an epidural through a tattoo is not healthy and therefore he will not give you one. I suggest if you are worried about it to ask your doctor his policy on it and if you don't like the answer, switch doctors. =
Answer: I had an epidural when I had my daughter in 11/04 and I have a tattoo on my back. Everything went okay because the ink in already is your system. =
Answer: i'm like 14 weeks pregnant with my second and i'm wanting a tattoo is it safe to get one while pregnant?
=
Answer: I have 2 tattoos, one on my lower back and one on my shoulder and neither are ruined by the drugs I had while in labor/birth. I had an epidural with one child and demerol with my other and my tattoos are fine. And to the last responder, no you can't get a tattoo while you are pregnant. Sorry, you will have to wait until after the baby. =
Answer: Is it really that hard to read atleast the last five statments before you post a question that has been asked word for word atleast 20 times...? your going to have to read some of them anyways after you ask it to get your answer.. may as well save time =
Answer: well excuse me for asking a simple question my friend got two tattoos while pregnant and i was wanting to do the same but wasn't sure if it were safe for the baby. no i can't take the time to read the posts because i barley have time to write my own so i hope that answers your question. =
Answer: Not true at all! I have a full back tattoo and a smaller one on my belly and had a baby 3 months ago. My tats are fine. The common worry is that docs won't give an epi if your lumbar is covered with a tattoo. I spoke with an anaesthesiologist and this is just an urban legend, however, different doctors feel differently about this because there haven't really been many studies on it. My suggestion: speak with the doc before your due date about an epidural. If the doc wouldn't want to give this, another one surely would. :o) =
Answer: enough about the tattoos right now i'm currently 17 weeks pregnant and i can't seem to get rid of my bladder infections and its causing me alot of pain, did any of u other moms experience this problem??? =
Answer: can i get a tattoo if i am 5 months pregnant
=
Answer: no hone i've already asked this question and everyone has givin me a smart butt answer and to put it in a nice way for u the answer is no i think its because the ink gets into ur system or something like that.... =
Answer: absolutely not!i have a kitty cats face on my lower back and i'm about to give birth to my third son.my cat stiil looks great.. =
