Doctors at John Hunter Hospital in New South Wales, Australia have had some success treating patients with heart failure by using adult stem cells. The trial involved treating 10 patients dealing with chronic heart failure with stem cells taken from the patients. The stem cells were then manipulated and injected back into each patient. So far, at six months after the stem cell treatment, the first three of the patients have demonstrated improved heart function, ranging from 20% to 60% improvement. Doctor’s expect that it will still be a few more months before the remaining 7 patients can be properly assessed to determine the results of the treatment. ABC.net.auSeptember 7, 2006
Princess Kiko to Donate Umbilical Cord Blood for Transplant Use
Japan’s Princess Kiko has said that she plans to donate her baby’s umbilical cord blood so that it can be used to help leukemia patients. The announcement came on September 6 from hospital officials in Tokyo where she had given birth earlier to the new Prince. However, the decision to donate the cord blood was made before the Princess underwent a c-section Wednesday morning. It is hoped that the Princess’ actions encourage more people in Japan to donate and learn more about umbilical cord blood transplants. MDN.Mainichi-MSN.co.jp
