Working At Home

I have to work at home and may have to hire a nanny. I'm a new mom and I am terrified of hiring a person who is incompetent. Does anybody know where I can get some references / background check on a nanny? Is there perhaps some sort of a nanny union I can contact? I live in Chicago.

when I was in the process of looking for a nanny to take care of my daughter I found it beneficial to call each applicants references. I ended up hiring a woman who had worked for another family for 10 years. They told me all about her so I felt comfortable leaving my daughter in her care.

If you are working at home and your nanny will be taking care of your child at your home why not tell your applicants that part of the hiring process will involve the chosen candidate working on a trial basis for a week or so. They should be paid the regular amount, but this way if you take someone on a trial basis you can figure out for sure if you will be able to trust them for the long haul.
