my boyfriend wants me to work. I just had my son 3 weeks ago and i cant imagine getting a job any time soon. I didn't work at all through my pregnancy, i wouldn't mind working, infact i'd like to make money so we can get a place of our own (we live with his parents) but i dont see how its possible. My little man needs me all the time. Im breast feeding, and he's always hungry. I cant pump enough to keep him full i just have to let him latch on. Also, he always wants to be held, and he doesn't want to sleep alone. My mother in law says i shouldn't hold him, because when i want to work i wont be able to get a babysitter because he'll need to be held all the time, and nobody would do that. But i think if my little guy wants to be held, i should hold him. I dont believe in just letting him cry. what shoud i do??? will holding him really make it so i wont be able to leave him and go to work? what about his eating habbits?

There is no such thing as spoiling or holding a 3 week old too much, so you just hold away! At his age they should want to be held. Also, remember most mothers who take maternity leave take atleast 6 weeks off. You are still getting used to being a mom, don't rush towards change so fast. You need to be home to feed your son. YOU will know when it is the right time for you to go back to work, so YOU make the choice, no one else. If you do not have a really need to work at this time, then don't. I think you should enjoy being a mom, and get used to your new job you will have the rest of your life.

I totally agree with you CarolA, I went to work a few months after my first son was born and I deeply regret it now. He is 3 years old and I missed out on a lot. With the second baby I spent as much time as possible breastfeeding on request and holding and cuddling. It never harmed him and I never found problems when eventually I did go back to work.

This thread is just a little old, but I started working when my son was 3 months old, but I only worked 6:30pm to 11:00pm, with a maxiumum of 30 hours per week. I had all day with my son, and my work was great about giving me 2 days off a week. I spent a lot of time with my son. When you do go back to work, make sure they know you have an infant, and you make your own availability, tell them you can only work after 4:00pm or something because of daycare issues. If they want you and need your employment, they will work with you.
