I'm breastfeeding my 5 day old and I have to take Kephlex for a postpartum infection. I would like to take acidopholus supplements to avoid thrush, but I'm not sure how much to take, and if it is safe for baby. Any advice?

Hi Miranda... I was wondering the same thing. I got bronchitis and have just been put on antibiotics (baby is 2 weeks old). I decided against the acidopholus and have just been eating ton of yogurt. I bet I will get a yeast infection or give him thrush... But am trying to avoid it. How will I know if he develops thrush?

yoghurt is a lot better, in a live form than the tablets. you must eat it when you have any antibiotics in order to replace the flora in your intestines and to prevent a yeast infection. if your baby has thrush, trust me you will hear all about it from your baby firsthand. it's very painful, white tongue (not from the milk) and a red anus. they scream to high hell when they have it. also, acidopholus is safe for the baby, the antibiotics on the other hand i can't say for sure.

I checked online and with my dr to make sure kephlex was okay - and it is. Also, thrush isn't always that dramatic, I had it with my daughter and she just had a couple white patches, she was fine otherwise and didn't seem uncomfortable. I was the one who was uncomfortable!! It made my nipples feel like they had needles in them every time I fed her. I am doing the yogurt too, decided against the supplements as well. Thanks for the responses.

I do know nursing decreases the chance of babies getting trush, however, if the mother is prone to yeast infections this may change things. I would continue eating yogurt, but ask the doctor how much. I heard ingesting too much dairy products is not good when you are nursing. Good luck.
