My lo is a month old and I have been exclusively pumping since my milk came in about 5 days postpartum. Although my goal is to give my lo as much breastmilk as possible, I'm not sure how long my milk supply will last. I've been pumping 5-6 times a day and consistently produce about 15-17 ounces total daily....It's not that much, but enough to produce 5 bottles during the day..and have been supplementing with formula at night. Just curious to see if anyone is doing the same and how long the pumping sessions will continue. I go back to work in early September and thinking about switching over to formula..but I seriously feel guilty that I won't be giving her breastmilk...but at the same time do not want to be sooo tied to the pump.. anyone feeling like this??

btw- just wanted to add... the reason why i've been pumping is b/c my lo gets VERY fussy at the nipple..she latches on fine, but she prefers the flow of a bottle... what a lil princess ;-)

I'm doing exactly the same thing. My lo is 4 weeks old and also started pumping around 5 days PP due to latching issues. I pump 7 times a day and pump btw 30-35 oz a day. I'm able to freeze about 20 oz a day though. I've been lucky though since my MIL helps take care of her during the day since I also feel like my life runs around pumping. I plan on weaning down to 4 pumps a day in a couple of weeks though since my MIL goes back to work then (she works for the school system). I plan to keep it to 4 pumps a day as I go back to work in late Sept. My work is BFing friendly since they have a lactation room. I know what you mean about feeling guilty about havign to switch to formula but you have to do what is best for you. I feel like we're doing our best.....it's the most selfless thing we'll ever do for ANYONE! I mean pumping is much more labor intensive with all of the time commitment and bottles to clean than actual BFing. So, don't beat yourself up for choosing to switch over to formula!

I am also exclusively pumping as well, but am having to supplement with formula too just bc my supply isn't up yet enough to keep my little guy satisfied. My baby is 8 days old and I pump about every 3 hours and produce about 1-2 ounces per session, but since he requires about 3-4 ounces every 3 hours I have to supplement with the formula. I am hoping that my supply will increase to the point where I dont have to give him formula though. Guess I will start eating oatmeal and drinking mother's milk tea. GL

WOW 30-35 oz a day..that is awesome!! Although I work for a large company, we don't have a designated lactation/mother's room..boohoo! I may have to talk to HR about getting a key to one of the conference rooms..someone actually told me that companies are required by law to provide nursing mother's with a private room/key for pumping!! If my company can provide that, I may consider lugging my 50 pound pump with me to work ;-)
Eclectic66- let me knowif you are getting good results with the oatmeal and mother's milk tea!

Hi ladies, I have been pumping exclusively for 1 year now and I have been fine. i have never had to supplement with formula. i have noticed, though, that aroundthe time of my period my supply drops soduring those times i use fenugreek to help build it up again. dont pressure yourselves because what you are doing is so beneficial to the health of your babies and they will benefit. ep is hard work, i know, but i just thinkof the rewards.

I am glad to know that I am not the only one who is pumping exclusively. My baby is 3 and a 1/2 months old n since last 15 days my milk productin has reduced considerably (not even 3 oz in every four hours of pumping). I got my periods 3 days back, but just spotting. Is this the reason of reduction of milk production? I will start having fenugreek powder once again. Would see if this would help. Is ther any other way to increase milk production?

I am also pumping exclusively, my baby is 2 weeks old today and I bought some fenugreek capsules yesterday and this am i was able to pump out 3oz. (which was the most i have ever done in one sitting), but the rest of the pumps throughout the day I only get about 1 oz. I am hoping it picks up bc at this rate I feel like I will never produce enough to sustain him on breastmilk alone. Does anyone know when your supply normally kicks in and when should I worry if it doesn't???

i have read that several things affects milk production one being menustration. other things include stress, lack of sleep, not pumping frequently and not fully emptying your breasts. i hacve read that you should pump 5 minutes after the last drop comes out to ensure they are fully drained. also try to pump every two to three hours. hope that helps. good luck.
