I was wondering if you are sick with a cold does it effect your breast milk? my sister has a cold and is scared that her breast milk is making her little one sick and he's only almost 2 weeks old. he has a little cold aswell:(

Hi, I created a post similar to this in the infant forum (see: antibodies in breastmilk & getting sick), anyway ... my 3 year old son, my husband, & I all have bad colds & I'm breastfeeding my 3 month old daughter. So far she's not sick at all, but from what I have read on the internet & the replies I've gotten from other moms say that the best thing to do is keep breastfeeding because your body will create more antibodies & white blood cells in your breastmilk when your sick so if the baby does catch it (which you kind of can't avoid when your nursing) they will get better faster & wont get it as sick as the mom. But I have been sick for 2 days & my son & husband for over a week now & so far my daughter is totally fine.

I had a bad cold when my daughter was 2 months old and I was breastfeeding her and it freaked me out, I was sure I was going to give it to her. But she never did end up getting sick, even having that much close contact. It provides the best protection against illness and all babies get sick at some point. It's still best to nurse, even through most illnesses.

i've heard that your baby starts receiving antibodies against your cold before you even know you have it, so keep on feeding.
