[Original Post]

My son is 6 days old and is on Enfamil Lipil w/Iron. When we feed him, it seems like he doesnt like the taste he make that facial expression, but stil drinks it. Somtimes he puke/spits up but rarely. It seems that while we feed him he poops, I mean you can hear it, it just comes out, i dont know if its a diarreha or what, also he may drink 1/2 or 1 oz then he'll eat 2-3 oz and back to 1oz, is this normal? Do I need to switch formula? Thanks

I wish I had an answer for you, but like most of the mothers on this thread I know very little about formula. You might want to ask on the "infant care" section. Best wishes!

sounds like your baby may be lactose intolerant. you my want to try the soy based formula. mix half and half of the old stuff and the soy until you've made the transition.

It all sounds normal to me, but it has been a few years since I fed my first formula, and then she was several months old. My b/f baby commonly poops while eating , though. I'd say as long as there are no signs of dehydration (no or few wet diapers, sunken soft spot, etc.), that he is fine. BTW-as far as the taste-the stuff smells disgusting, I can't imagine it tastes any good : )

Formula is bad tasting. It is full of vitamins and nutrients that the baby needs, however, vitamins taste horrible. We all know how wonderful those prenat vit. were. Your son will get used to it. As long as he is pooing do not worry unless it is very frequent he is very fussy, and there is blood in the stool. This is a sign of a milk allergy. Changing the amounts he drinks from one feeding to the next is normal. As long as he is getting enough in a 24 hour period he is fine. He is still young and formula is hard on babies systems. It takes them longer to adust to this than breast milk. Good luck. I have heard enfamil is better than than simulac. Everyone I know who used simulac had fussy, babies with alot of gas and constipation problems. They were health, just had stomach pains for the first 3 to 4 months. I hope this helps.

I agree with the other "to kristina" post. Have you ever tasted baby formula??? It's pretty bad. Babies don't eat really well to begin with after they are born. Honestly, why aren't you breast-feeding? Just be patient. If your baby is fussy for what is seemingly no reason, he may have gas. Try Mylicon drops. It's like
Gas-X for babies. It's normal for babies to poop when you feed them (they are making room) this is probably when they are most relaxed. My daughter still (she is 19 mos old) poops when she eats. Just make sure you are paying attention to what is coming out of your baby... if he is still passing meconium, it should be dark pine-green, with a tar-texture. If he is on to normal bowel movements for a baby, it should be yellow to light brown, and runny, not slimy or stringy. If you notice red streaks, or an unusual color/consistency, tell your pediatrician.

I B/F and supplement with Enfamil Gentlease. It has the same ingredients as the Enfamil Lipil w/iron but its new and is made for babies with gas and fussiness.I really like it.They don't sell it evereywhere yet but at least wal-mart has it.Give it a try.

bad formula? - September 27th, 2005 12:35 PM

how weird! I just had my second son Thursday, and the hospital sent home the same formula as free gift-samples. He had the exact same symptoms. He would drink about 3 swallows, make nasty faces, and quit drinking. My husband was feeding him, and noticed that there was a lot of curdly looking milk in his mouth after trying to get Dylan to eat. We switched to soy formula, and he is much happier. But reading your post, I wonder if its not the formula?

Oh, and we tasted the enfamil lipil and it tastes like the grain dust we get covered with when we are setting up the grain bales for our cows. I wouldn't want to drink it either

Was your baby c-section or vaginal? My baby was born via c-section and for about the first 3 weeks she spit up ALOT! Her doc said it was because she wasnt pushed through the birth canal. Also at 6 days old he still doesnt get the whole sucking thing. Everything is a new taste to him so I wouldnt worry about it right now!
