If it helps, I never HAD a period while breastfeeding. We nursed until 7 months and then my ds weaned because my milk supply was affected from a new pregnancy. :) I was only nursing when I became pregnant, so it's not always true what they say. I'd even heard that if you exclusively BF for the first six months that that's "birth control" We got pregnant when ds was 4 1/2 months. Not having ever had a pp period I can't give you a personal experience, but I don't think you should expect your period to be back to normal. It takes several months for some women to get back to their normal cycle and some get a totally different one. Good luck and congrats on your son! Boys are so much fun!

Hi browneyes... my dd was born May 31st and I have already had 2 periods. Just getting over the 2nd one. I too am afraid of getting preggo so soon so dh and i are using condoms. I am looking into the Merina*sp insert. I am strictly bfing so I too find it wild. I guess just take a test to rule out pregnancy then ask your doc for some type of BC. Good luck

Unfortunately not getting pregnant while breastfeeding ONLY applies to those who have not got their period back yet. As soon as your period returns there is a very good you have or will be starting to ovulate soon. I would suggest using some form of birth control if you don't want to get pregnant, your doctor can give you advise on what's safe while breastfeeding.
