My daughter is 4 weeks...when I pump about how much milk should I be getting? How long should I be pumping? I have only pumped 3 times now and the first time I got 3 oz and then the 2nd time I got almost 2 oz and then today I barely got 1.5oz....this is from a double electric pump, pumping both breasts at the same time--it is the combined amount from both breasts. I feel this is a small amount but the lactation consultant didn't seem concerned. She also told me to only pump for 15 minutes, no longer.

Sounds normal. That's about how much I'd get. I would pump until I got a let-down and the milk stopped flowing. I always got less milk pumping than nursing, too.

Sounds normal but to be honest I found the only way to get more than a few ounces off was to continuously pump in between feeds and I could get an easy 8oz. This took a few weeks because what i was actually doing was tricking the body into thinking baby was taking extra feeds and so the supply built. Pumping after a feed is practically useless because the baby (if feeding well) will empty the breast. I found usually an hour after a feed and just pump for about 8-10mins on each side BUT ONLY if you are getting milk. Pumping without milk is just plain painful. Pumping more frequently will get your supply up and it is now that is the best time to start building a breast milk reserve for weaning. As long as you have a deep freezer you can keep it for 6-9months. With a door freezer it is 3-6months but check because different rules apply here as we have found before.

Thank you Tory! :) I was all excited because I pumped this morning before 8am about 30 mins after feeding Ava from the breast and I got 2 oz from each breast! Wow, so that is 4oz in all which is twice what I had been getting. I think I will try again one more time this morning. I would love to get my supply up, but I worry about what will happen once I get a good stockpile of milk in the freezer and then stop pumping so much. Will the reduction in stimulation cause my milk to dry up? By that time Ava will probably be feeding less often too. Our freezer is a regular door freezer (we don't have a deep freezer) and we don't have a lot of room in there for storage. What do you think?

STEF your breasts have to adjust to you pumping that happened to me too.... when do you pump? after feeding? I need a little more info and I have been told that too don't pump more than 15 mins at a time.

Tina, for the past two days I decided to pump about 15-30 minutes after I feed ava for her first morning feed (around 6am) and both yesterday and today I got 4 oz total! 2 from each breast so I feel that is much better. I am able to get 2, 2oz bags from it so I'm only doing it once each day for now to build up a little stockpile. Our freezer doesn't have much room in it anyways.
