Hi all, my son is 3 1/2 months and we had a rough and slow start with the breastfeeding. He has been doing well for a while now but the last week or so I have noticed that my left breast gets sore sometimes after a feeding like it's still full with sharp pains in the nipple area and a bruised feeling on the side. It seemed to go away with the next feeding but this has happened a few time and he is very fussy on that side as well. There have been times when he only eats 10 minutes on that side and then becomes just too fussy to finish(he has been a slow eater up until now and usually takes 30 minutes on each side) my nurse said that he may get quicker as he gets older but no guarantee's. He has been sleeping from around 11 pm to 6-7 am so I haven't had to feed and I wondered if that slowed down the milk production for during the day? I guess I have a few ?'s. like is he just draining the milk faster on that side or does it sound like my milk is slowing down and he's not getting enough? I realize sometimes the fussyness is just a need for a burp but when I switch to the right side he takes it fine and eats still for 30 minutes. I should mention that the times when I have had the breast pain were time he had a full 30 min feed and not a 10 min fussy feed. has anyone else had this kind of a problem? He is sometimes fussy on the right side as well but mostly it is the left. I really don't want to stop breastfeeding yet but I am worried that I may not be producing enough which is why he is fussy when he eats and I"m not sure how to fix this problem. I welcome all advise please and thank you

it sounds like a clogged milk duct to me. i'm going through that right now, your symptoms sound very similar, which would be the cause of the pain/bruised feeling and baby being fussy on that side. keep breastfeeding! use warm compresses and massage on that side before nursing. also i read that it can be caused by baby not being lacked on correctly. try a different position, like the football hold when you nurse him, sometimes that can cause the duct to become unclogged. the main thing is to keep nursing especially on that side. He may be fussy because a clogged duct can slow down your letdown. Just be careful with a clogged duct because it can turn into infection if not delt with! good luck and keep breastfeeing. It is so rewarding and so healthy for your baby for at least the first 6 months
