Hello there, I am BF my 4th child who is 3.5 months old. She has been BF only so far. I began to notice recently that my breasts felt lighter and she was nursing for only about 5-6 minutes per side. She still continues to sleep thru the night. 7pm till I wake her at 7am so you would think she was full and content but twice now I have found a completely dry diaper in the a.m. I took her in yesterday to weigh her at the dr's office and in 21 days she had only gained 5 ozs. I bought a pump and now have been feeding her first then pumping when my breasts have become empty hoping to stimulate more milk. I bought a bottle and formula today and have offered her it AFTER I feed her and she takes about 3 ozs of the formula. I REALLY don't want to give up BFing. We both enjoy it and with my other 3 kids I fed them till their 1st birthdays. I am wondering what could be the cause of my low supply? I am 39 years old and thought maybe it was hormonal? Any advice on how to keep my milk would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a lactation consultant to get herbal recommendations from? (ex. fenugreek) Motherlove.com has some good stuff like more milk plus. My daughter was the same way, nursing for just a few minutes and then I ended up having to supplement (I had mastitis though and my supply never fully returned). Good luck!!!

I started taking fenugreek on Friday. I noticed that DD started waking up hungry more at night and i was pumping only 2-2.5oz when I was at work, where I used to pump at least 6 oz. It seems to be working, yesterday I got 6 oz again! i was able to make DD 2 bottles for when she's at the sitters. I asked a LC at the hospital where I gave birth and she told me there are no side effects on baby. oyu shouldn't take it if you have asthma or diabetes though

do the herbal things cost a lot?

The fenugreek? I bought a bottle at a health foods store for about $9 for 100 pills. i take 9 pills/day. Three 3x a day. But I think its cheaper online and maybe in otehr stores.
