When I am bf my ds, he loses suction, even though he has a good latch. It hurts my nipple, and it makes him swallow air. Anyone experience this and have anything to help? It seems to happen more when he starts eating. I have tried expressing some milk in case my breast was too firm and have tried different holds and more/less incline (didn't help). He also does it when I pump and he takes a bottle.

Do you have access to a lactation consultant in your area?

Yes, there are 2 on staff at my ped's office that moms can use for free, but I thought I would check the board first,

sorry - I have no ideas... :-) I know there is a baby at my dd's daycare that is older and the attendant has to help him with his bottle all the time - a suction thing for him too. I don't know what you can do at the breast. I wonder if a shield would help?

I have a shield, but it doesn't help either. Thanks anyway. It is so strange, because, not only is it mainly when he starts to nurse for the first 3 minutes or so, this just started about a week ago and my ds is 5 weeks old! Maybe he is just trying to eat too fast at first.

Sometimes when I BF my daughter I produce so much milk that it makes my nipples and areola a bit slimy because it flows so quickly. Usually if I wipe of the breast she can latch back on nicely. That's my experience and I don't know if you have the same problem, but it works for me.

I have the same issue, too (can pump 8oz in 5 minutes or less), and I never thought about the flow/"slimyness" being related to the suction. I bet that is it. Thanks!!
