Hello- Mine grunts all night too! I think it's gas -my ds is also 5 weeks. Hell grunt and grunt and eventually it turns into a cry. also I notice that when I have music on or water/nature sounds on hes quiet- as soon as it stops, he starts to grunt. I spend the whole night getting up and turning back on his music. I'm sorry I'm not much help- I have a peds appointment on thursday and I'm going to ask her about the grunting and the gas. I'm really frustrated too! |

My recommendation is to pedal his legs for 15 minutes after he eats. This will help gas that has built up to travel through his intestinal tract more easily. Ever feel the urge to poop or toot after running? It is the same idea...it helps work stuff out. Anyway, try it for 3 days to see if it seems to help. If not, abandon ship and revert back to life as usually. I'd put money on him feeling better. Good luck. |

Definitely sounds like gas. We peddle our sons legs every morning and pretty much every time we change him. He has fun with it...and it definitely gets the gas out! He used to grunt alot more than now...but when he's backed up with gas -like last night - all because of me and what I ate...bad mommy - he'll wake up countless times thru the night because he needs to fart. He'll cock his head back, arch his back and twists himself so that he spins a full 360....all the while kicking me. It'll get better though. Promise! |

I just got off the phone w/the nurse at my pediatrician's office. My ds will be 5 weeks old in 2 days, and he did this exact thing all day yday--back arching, kicking, screaming, and a noisy night's sleep. The nurse said it is likely reflux. My dr is out and is calling me tomorrow to resolve it. I will try the pedaling as well, if it keeps up today. |

Oh yeaH! Reflux...definately a strong possiblity. You may want to elevate one end of the mattress tonight. We put a very firm pillow UNDER the mattress. It helped. I also found out that stuff I was eatting was not helping with reflux. Chocolate, soda (acidic) and anything that I ate too much of (oreos dipped in milk! brownies, mexican) Sorry we did not think of that earlier! |

I've read that babies go through some digestive system developmental changes around that age. My ds went through that a few weeks ago and I really believed it was reflux-- all the symptoms were identical to what you guys are describing. But, he's been gradually getting over it, like he's outgrowing it.... However, for a small percentage reflux is the issue, so definitely get baby checked out to confirm/eliminate reflux as the cause of the problems. If it turns out it isn't reflux, hopefully your babies will outgrow that difficult phase in a few weeks! |

I just wanted to give you an update. My dr agreed that my ds has reflux. He prescribed some baby Zantac. I gave my ds his first dose yday, and it is a night and day difference. My little guy is a happy baby again and is sleeping peacefully--7.5 hours last night--yea! It is such a relief, because it was breaking my heart to see him so uncomfortable. I've heard that they grow out of reflux, so I hope that I can ease him off meds before too long. Since your ds doesn't want to eat, he may have reflux as well. Not wanting to eat is a big symptom. I hope your lo is doing better. |

Ann my dd has reflux and is on Zantac, before she was diagnosed she spent 3 and a half days straight screaming. I felt so terrible. It's helped her so much. Right when I was reading that he arches his back I thought of reflux. My dd doesn't/didn't grunt, but she was in so much pain. I'm glad you found out. Does he spit up a lot? We have everything "propped up"...changing pad, pack n play. My dd spits up tons. Poor thing smells like stomach acid!! But some babies have silent reflux, where just the stomach acid creeps up into their esophagus. I'm sure you know all of this now...Good luck with your little guy. |

My ds spits up quite a bit, but when his reflux was really bad, he projectile spit up and coughed/sputtered to get it out while he was screaming his little head off. That has stopped completely w/the Zantac. He still spits up but it seems like a normal amount to me and he is happy. We have him propped up while sleeping, and we try to keep him completely vertical for at least 30 minutes after eating. The Zantac was just what he needed. He had a bit of a crying fit last night and didn't want to eat at his 11pm feeding, but he is soooo much better. A friend of mine's baby had silent reflux. Her (now ex) dr didn't listen to her concerns until her ds had been suffering for a while and had sores in his esophagus...I would be so mad! |

Hi ladies! Thanks for all your comments. I wanted to give you an update on my son. We went to our ped on Monday. He said he was grunting and squirming because of dry skin so we should give him a bath everyday and moisturize. (doesn't a bath dry out skin more???) Anyway, didn't make sense to us, so we thankfully got a second opinion. Immediately the new ped said it sounded just like reflux and his rash is not dry skin but sebbohratic dermatitis and we should only bathe him 1-2 times per week and moisturizing wouldn't help. He prescribed Prevacid and since it's a compound medicine our insurance won't cover it. I hope it's worth it! I just hate to see him in pain and uncomfortable. Thanks again for your comments. It helps to know that other's are going through similar things. |

I am glad you got some answers, and I hope the Previcid helps your ds! |
