My due date is exactly 3 weeks away & I have been focusing on breastfeeding lately (took a class, visited the lactation center at hospital, & am currently reading a book) - and I have a few questions for moms who BF. We are planning on getting our son circumscribed while in the hospital but I have heard that this might inhibit the breastfeeding experience in the beginning- which could cause later problems. Meaning the baby might be in too much pain to latch correctly & thus, not get off to the right start. Has anyone had this problem? Would you recommend delaying the circumcision for a week or so?

Also, what about c-sections? I don't know for sure if I'll need one or not but my doctor said not to be surprised if I do b/c my pelvis is on the smaller side & baby is big. Does this hinder the breastfeeding process in the beginning?

Thanks for your anticipated stories/experiences. I just want to make sure that I get off to a good start.

I didn't have a c-section or a boy baby either for that matter but I would let your nurses know your concerns. If they are aware that you very much want to breast feed your baby they will help you get through any obstacles that arise. Also you most likely will have a lactation consultant in your hospital that you can request to speak w/ possibly even before you give birth and then again right after. Good luck and I wish you a smooth labor.

I had a c-section and a baby boy 4 weeks ago. Aside from being a little tired the day of, my ds didn't have any effects from the circumcision and nursed great (had his circumcision 2 days after birth). There are also different circumcison methods. After reading about them, we chose a dr that does the gomo band (sp?) procedure. We just had to put petroleum jelly on it so it wouldn't stick to the diaper. It healed very quickly. I had the bikini cut for my C, and it was easy to keep him high enough to not push on my incision. I've heard people recommend the football hold for nursing right after a C, but I didn't have any problem doing the cradle. My son was also big (10lbs 4ozs), and the football hold didn't work too well for me.

Atira36- I hadn't heard anything about circumcision causing latching problems. My son is almost 6mos now - was circumcised the day after he was born and latched on pretty easily. I didn't take any lactation classes or read any books...plenty of people in the hospital were more than willing to shove their hands on my boobs and show me what do to. I was a little frustrated at first because even though he'd latch on...getting to that point was tough for me without another set of hands. I thought i'd never get it. I couldn't do the football position, and couldn't get the pillows propped right for the cradle position. Then when I got home..having to do it myself without help was that much harder. A few weeks into it friends suggested I try laying down with him and feeding him that way. Hard at first, but now thats our preferred method. As he got older I didn't have to worry about how his mouth was around the nipple, or anything really...he just opens his mouth, finds the nipple himself and goes to town. I wouldn't worry. Is this your first? I found I did a ton of reading before hand and in the end.. didn't need to. As for the circumcision, he healed up really quick. We also put petroleum jelly on it so it wouldn't stick to the diaper..then sooner than later, it was all fine. I'm sure you both will do fine! Good luck! : )
