What are your experiences with sippy cups and just plain ole cups? My dd is 6mo old and STILL refusing to eat at daycare...took 1oz yesterday from a bottle. I have tried 3 different kinds of sippy's but she just chews on them and hasn't figured out sucking. Do you think it is safe to try the "older" kind that it just kind of leaks out of? At what age did you guys try sippy's or cups? Should I post this on infant care?

tryingx, my dd had a hard time with the concept of sucking. Nursers don't really "suck" (at least that is my understanding). They create suction and then the jaw action cause milk to flow in conjunction with let down (correct me if I am wrong ladies!) Anyway, I actually had to get out a scissors and cut a tiny piece of the plastic off the sippy cup membrane so that some milk would seep through. That way, she knew that there was good stuff in the cup. Eventually she got better at it. I will say that at 11 months, she is just now getting good at drinking from the sippy - except when she holds it upside down! We use a cup as well as an empty plastic water bottle. With the water bottle, she puts her whole mouth around the lip. This tends to make less mess then the cup because liquids are contained by her adorable little lips. Take the wrapper off so you can see into the bottle better so you don't drown her. (Yes, we have dumped water all over our baby...numerous times). I would see what others think about this on the infant care site. They have some great ideas over there.

i used the soft nippled sippy cups with my dd to transition from bottle to a cup, it made transiton very easy. She loved them because she was still able to get the sucking effect out of them. They sell them in the walmart brand for about 95 cents a peice. They are great (parents choice brand). These also didnt leak for me. The type with the straws leaked really badly.

Just yesterday, dd learned to drink from a straw. It took her forever to figure that one out!

lol i remember those days. It is cute to watch though isnt it? I cant wait till i get to do all those fun things with my baby new baby.....he needs to hurry up and get here!

She reaches for my water bottle everytime she sees it, but I don't think she is quite ready yet - but that may be what we end up with too! Kristin - are you talking about the ones that actually have a tip that kind of looks like a bottle nipple?

Kristin11 - March 16th, 2007 12:15 PM

Yeah exactly!! They were great, My dd didnt even notice when the bottle disapeared for good and i was able to wean her from those to hard tipped sippy cups.

I think my dd would be GLAD to see the bottle go! ha ha She did eat at daycare yesterday - woo hoo! I'll look for those - I couldn't find any like that last I looked. I saw a child at daycare with one like you describe.

I bought them at walmart. They are in baskets and sold individually. They are usually on the bottom shelf near by the bottles and sippy cups rack. I think they maybe parents choice brand. darn i tried to see if walmart had them on thier website but they dont.

I'll take a look - I do remember seeing "bins" of sippys on the end of one of the aisles.

Kristin11 - March 16th, 2007 3:21 PM

They are very easy to clean too, my dd bottle brush always fit them grat, no little wierd peices to try to figure out how to wash.

alverran - March 16th, 2007 4:21 PM

Tryingx how is your dd with the sippy? My dd is 7 months old and just plays with it... What to do? Kellens Mom, as always thanks. I am limited here with sippys... Maybe I need to find a good Italian brand. I took the valve out of the cup and she just dumps it everywhere and plays with the mess. :)

I couldn't find the walmart sippy mentioned. I do have some of the disposable sippys. We had a stomach virus attack my dd this weekend and I found that I could squeeze the side of these sippys and a little pedialyte would go into her mouth. At 1:30 one morning she actually acted like she liked the sippy and sucked on it and talked to it. I think I will use those for a bit. My dd was 6mo on Saturday.

Sorry you couldnt find those cups, glad that your baby is taking to the disposable ones though!!

Tammy276 - March 21st, 2007 12:48 PM

why are you trying a sippy so early? I just think 6 mo. is early for that (personal opinion)...your baby is still a baby. If shes not ready, don't force it.

tryingx3 - March 21st, 2007 4:48 PM

I introduced a bottle at 3wks and she has hated them ALL the way - there are days at day care she will only take enough milk to get by until she can be with me again. My ped suggested cup feeding.

I know they say there is no need to give a sippy cup so soon (ds is almost 6mos)...but we did this weekend and he likes it. He's teething so he gums the rubber..which also drips out cool water in his mouth - overall soothing. I stick a cube or two of ice in the cup with his water. He gets really mad if we take it away from him.
