when is the best time to pump breastmilk? I breast feed and would also like to get my fiance involved as well by feeding the baby breast milk in a bottle. Any help would be appreciated.

Apparently somewhere between when you get up and 2pm - after 2pm the quality reduces. Also, I would advise that you pump just after you feed the little one normally as you can always run the risk of draining yourself to near to the next feed. However, I often found at the begining that I was running out of time to do it before 2pm some days so whilst this is the best time it's not exclusive and it would be okay to pump one evening if baby is getting expressed in the bottle and you're going to be full. Hope this helps. Good luck.

i hear at night is best. ok i find the more i breastfeed, the harder it is to pump, does anybody know if that's normal? Maybe my boobs just get too filled to fit in the little shield thingys.

I was advised by my lactation specialist to pump after I had fed my son until it's empty. The milk that comes in after 10-15 mins of nursing is the good rich hind milk that has more fat. I found that it really increased my milk supply - jenna - sometimes I had to massage my breasts a bit so it would fit in the shield thingy - I don't think more than a few drops was wasted when I massaged! Good Luck

I've never heard that the quality of breastmilk reduces after 2pm... rj80, did you mean to say "quantity" instead of quality? I agree with the others to pump right after you feed the baby, or, if you are trying to increase your supply you could try pumping in the middle of the night (assuming you aren't already b-feeding then.) fyi - my dh has been giving our baby his first morning feed by bottle since he was a month or two old, and it works out well... he goes to bed earlier and gets up earlier than me, and that way I stay up late to give the baby a "dream" feed every night, and don't have to up as early. If your fiance gave the baby the first feeding of the day, you could pump then instead of b-feeding...

I've heard in the early morning is best if your trying to pump. I've always had a lot of luck late at nite tho, about 10-12. I could then pump and not have to worry about having enough for the next feed, as she didn't wake up then. Now she does but I don't pump. JENNA - I slowed down with pumping as it was just so inconvenient. Now I can even get an ounce total out of both sides, some ppl just can't pump or end up not being able to get much. I used to be the one getting ounces out of each when I pumped.
