Can you do both? I am just wondering i want to try to breast feed but i would love to do both breast during the day and formula at night? Is this even possible?

My baby is almost 6 weeks old. I breastfed her for the first two days of her life and then because of many medical complications she was strictly bottlefed for the next 3 weeks. I started breastfeeding her during the day and formula feeding her at night when she was about 3 weeks old. We are still doing that now. I know that you can do it because I am doing it right now, but I'm trying to switch to breastfeeding day and night. When I wake up in the morning I'm very engorged, so that's a problem, but it's possible. It might decrease your supply a lot though, I don't know.

My girl is 6 weeks old as well, and we formula feed during the night (she sleeps longer in between feedings) and breastfeed during the day. It's a great help because my hubby can help more during the night. Like EricaG said though, if you wake up really engorged, you could very well decrease your supply. But if you pump during the night at the same time you formula feed your baby, even if it's only for about 5 minutes or so each side, you'll be fine. I pump at 10pm, then at her 3am feeding, then I skip the 6am, and pump again when we get up.

As everyone said, there's nothing wrong with breast and formula feeding. Just keep in mind that many babies develop nipple confusing and prefer bottle to breast if offered a bottle too early. Bottles are much easier to suck than boobs, and babies may fuss when offered the breast. However, breast is best, and you're doing the right thing choosing to breastfeed. I would recommend not starting your infant on bottles and formula until he or she has a well established latch - usually 4 to 6 weeks. In fact, you shouldn't give your baby anything but a nipple (no pacifiers or bottles) for the first 6 weeks - but obviously you'll know your baby best and use your discretion.

I breastfed at night and formula fed thoughout the day because I had to go back to work and I was unable to pump enough milk for my son. He did wonderful. My son never developed nipple confusion. His dad started him on a bottle and pacifier at 3 weeks old. He has quit taking a bottle but continues to breastfeed at 15 months.

With my 2nd and 3rd we did mostly breastfeeding with 1 or 2 formula bottles a day for each of them. I really wanted to with my oldest, but I waited too long... 4 weeks or so... and he wouldn't take the bottle at all. We started at one week with bottles with my 2nd and 3rd. There is always a chance of nipple confusion, fortunately mine never had it...

Everyones right also one of the most important things is your little ones tummy so say you BF for a while & all the sudden want to do Form. becareful about the sudden form. feeding might cause a tum ache so I'd mix my Pumped out milk w/ a sm amt of form. for several days My son was fine when we started the change although he was already 8mo but everyone had we so scared of the form. but I mixed it together for a little while & he was great & so was his tum.

I was strictly bf for 5 months, then at 5.5 started to add some formula (not mixed with breastmilk)- she had no problem. And, she didn't have any problem with nipple confusion either- had a bottle after 2 days in the hospital. It didn't set anyone back, but every baby is different. I did start doing just formula at night and have noticed a SIGNIFICANT decrease in my milk supply. After one night of just formula, I have no engorgement and don't feel any pain...so am really wondering how much it diminished. I am ready to stop anyways- but just a warning to you! It might go too fast. I was planning on stopping bf slowly too.
