ok, i have heard a lot of mixed arguements on this issue but i don't know what to believe. I try not to microwave the baby's expressed breastmilk but when my mom watches her she always wants to use the microwave even though i say not to,she likes to do things the quick, fast way all the time. I know it creates hot spots but is it true that nutrients etc. will be lost while microwaving as well or is it a myth or something??

Yes. DO NOT MIOWAVE BREASTMILK!!!!!!! Breastmilk has living cells in it and you are destrying them by microwaving the breastmilk- its not just the hotspots (that is for formula) You are destroying the living cells and the immunity that you give through breastmilk. What I do is microwave a mug of hot water for 1-2 min and then stick the bottle in the hot water to warm up- or use a bottle warmer. Never hear breastmilk on the stove or in the microwave.

Excited is right - don't microwave the bmilk. I think my MIL thought I was being paranoid as well, but microwaving the water and letting the bottle sit in there for a few minutes is almost as fast and you don't lose the nutrients. And boiling water on the stove is fine too. My dh actually heats a bottle on the stove with the temp down as low as possible. I only use the medela bottles to heat the milk since they are bpa-free.

Heating the bottle of breast milk in a cup of boiling water was exactly how I was shown to do it on the intensive care ward so I'm sure you're fine!

Jenna, have you thought of buying your mom a bottle warmer? It's just as fast. I had the Avent bottle warmer that costs about $40 (I know a little pricey but definitely worth it) and it takes about a minute for every ounce of breastmilk that you are heating up. Both my MIL and I each have one and it was one of the most used baby items in both of our households!

I would not microwave breast milk. I have the first years bottle warmer which cost 17.99 and that worked great for heating my milk. It is a bit tricky to figure out the measurement guide so I just made my own. My friends daycare uses the small "dip size" slow cookers to heat bottles, they just add water and let them simmer on low and put the bottle in to heat when it is needed. Those little slow cookers cost around $10, so that is another option...

thanks everyone. i've been thinking about buying a bottlewarmer. if i don't this time it's a must for next time.this is my 1st and i spent a lot on stuff i don't need as much. how long do the bottle warmers take to heat up now? She was saying that she used to have one but it took like 10 minutes to warm up ( but that was back then).

CROCK POT - put it on low and you will be amazed at how fast it will warm a bottle. Put it on high and you will probably kill all the nutrients of the bm. I kept a crock pot on for my mother-in-law when she kept my dd - she loved it. Obviously - keep it WAY back from the counter if you have other little ones around.
