OK, I am sure that this is a bad idea, and I have NOT taken any hoodia yet, but I thought I would ask you girls about this. I am so fat after this baby, and want to start dieting and I have heard such great things about hoodia. I am breastfeeding about 50%, formula the other 50%. Hoodia supposedly has no known side effects, but I am wondering if it would also supress the baby's appetite if I took it. I certainly would not do anything to endanger my baby.

I wouldn't take any type of diet thingy while i was breastfeeding. but if you're really adament about it you should definetely discuss this with your doctor first. breastfeeding in itself is a wonderful way to lose weight, along with eating healthy and excercising.

I have never been the kind of person to lose weight from breastfeeding. I think breastfeeding might help the uterus come back to size quicker, but not necessarily the fat! Even with baby #1, whom I nursed for a full year, I did weight watchers and exercised like crazy and still did not lose those last 15 pounds until I stopped nursing. Then the pounds melted off effortlessly. Weird, huh?

Breastfeeding mamas need to carry about 300 extra calories a day, to keep their milk as full of the yummy goodness as possible. A healthy diet and regular exercise are definately known to help you lose weight and have no side effects on your baby. I would try that before I tried a diet pill.

I agree-I lost all my pregnancy weight within a month. I contribute most of it to breastfeeding.

i too have been researching hoodia because i am struggling to lose the baby weight after baby #2 (she is 6 mos. old now and i breastfeed). i have the same concerns as you, concerned that it might pass into my milk and suppress my baby's appetite as well. it takes a lot of effort for me to get the weight off - just eating healthy, nursing and walking doesn't do it for me. i can't find any info either - so i'm considering giving it a try for a few weeks, "pumping and dumping", and giving my baby horizon's organic formula while i'm taking hoodia. for me, it's about striking a balance - right now, i'm not a happy mama being overweight and feel that a few weeks without breastmilk will be just fine for my baby. if it works, and i get a jumpstart on losing weight, then i will be a happier mama, which will be better for baby and me. anyway, if i find any substantial info i will be sure to pass it along to you!

I asked the peditrican about taking something, not hoodia, and she said it would affect babys appetite.
