I am breastfeeding at the momemt and am planning to introduce the bottle to my baby so when I go back to work, she'll be able to continue to have breastmilk. The thing is I'm not sure how much I should express for each feed. Is there a huge difference between, say, 6oz formula and 6oz breastmilk? Which one will satisfy hunger more?

I don't think it is the same, I think that breastmilk is more concentrated but don't quote me on that. What I do want to say is that I know breastmilk is digested faster. So, that is why breastfed babies tend to eat every 2-3 hours and formula fed babies every 3-4 hours. Hope you find the answer to the first part of your question.

I expressed milk for a whole year for my daughter (she refused the breast when she was 5 weeks old). I didn't introduce solids until she was six months old and she required pretty much the same amount of breast milk as was on the formula tin. I was quite amazed because I thought there would be a huge difference - in my case it was pretty much like for like. About every three days I had to give her a bottle of formula because I didn't quite have enough breastmilk but I wouldn't have thought that would have made a difference.

It's the same pretty much but some breastfed babies eat more often because breastmilk gets digested faster than formula. Emma was an every 2-3 hour eater when she was first born. Now at 4 months she's starting to go 3-4 hours. I pump while she's in daycare and I send out two 8 oz containers as she eats about 4 ounces every 3-4 hours and she usually has some leftover for me on Fridays so I freeze it for later if at some point I can't keep up when she starts eating more. So far so good. I've got about a month's supply frozen for daycare if she needs it but otherwise I send 16-20 oz of fresh stuff every day. She would never eat more than 4 oz a sitting but her daycare mom said she's starting to eat 5 oz now. Thank god my supply has increased! I don't want to have to supplement with formula.

Thanks for the replies. I can usually express about 6oz but sometimes I find that I've expressed a lot of foremilk and only a very little bit of hindmilk. So I worry that it won't be enough to satisfy my baby's hunger as foremilk is only the thirst quenching part and the hindmik is the more satisfying part. Does it really make much difference?
