Alright, I know I am going to start a whole snowball effect with this question but I really need help on this! Last night I went to a party and had about 4 hits off of a marijuana joint. No I am not proud of it, I dont know what came over me. Does anyone know if I have to stop breastfeeding or what I shoud do? Does anyone know the effects it could have on my 3 month old? What if I pump and let the milk refrigerate for a day before I feed it to my baby, is that ok? Thanks for your help, please dont think I am a horrible pot-head of a mother, I am very ashamed!

THERE IS ANOTHER THREAD ON THIS BELOW> I HAVE COPIED ALL OF THE STUFF THAT HAVE ACTUAL STUDIES TO SUPPORT THE INFO. The amount of THC found in breast milk of cannabis users is low despite accumaltion with regular use. Only heavy cannabis use will result in amounts that possibly are relevant for the baby. Occasional or low regular use will probably not be of relevance. Franjo Grotenhermen Marijuana has no reliable impact on birth size, length of gestation, neurological development, or the occurence of physical abnormalities. The administration of hundreds of tests to older children has revealed only minor differences between the offspring of marijuana users and nonusers, and some are positive rather than negative. (...) While it is sensible to advise women to abstain from all drugs during pregnancy, the weight of evidence suggests that marijuana does not directly harm the human fetus. Zimmer L, Morgan JP. Marijuana Myths Marijuana Facts. A review of the scientific evidence. New York/San Francisco: The Lindesmith Center, 1997. Should be pointed out that smoking marijuana has the same effects as smoking tabacco. Ingestion maybe an option, but I found no supporting documentation on that. http://www.erowid.org/plants/-c

Wow don't freak out. I know lots of friends who have done the same thing, and everything turned out fine. You sound like a great mom, don't beat yourself up. :)

No one is perfect. If you are really concerned, just pump and dump.

I don't smoke pot while I brestfeed. That is my choice. When I'm not nursing I use pot like a tylonel. If I am really sick and feel like s**t I would have a hit of pot. All it does is take the edge off and make me sleep. While I'm nursing though I don't touch it or anything stronger than an extra strength tylenol. A lot of women take drugs (prescribed) while nursing though. My question is. Is pot any worse than those drugs?

Jenn - December 25th, 2005 6:19 PM

YES pot is worse then prescribed drugs due to the fact that a larger amount of pot passes through the breast milk. Compared to prescribed drugs that only pass a small fraction amount! IT'S NOT SAFE to smoke pot and breastfeed. It's harmful to the baby and is irrisponsible of the mother!!!

April - December 25th, 2005 11:01 PM

Jenn - How do you know that? Have you read a study on it? I would be very interested to read about the effects of pot in breastmilk.

xXx-Lesley-xXx - December 27th, 2005 9:22 AM

Well considering they don't know much about pot and breastfeeding I think it's hard to go by facts! It's all personal experiances, or hear say that people will tell you. I honestly have no idea on the situation. I don't smoke normal cigarettes never mind joints. I had a mate who smoked the stuff all the way through her pregnancy, she didn't breastfeed though, but still smoked it after birth. Seems you only had 4 I can't imagine it getting into your milk supply.

I believe everyone has to do what they think is right. do the research and get the facts and then make an informed decision. I think that during breastfeeding it's important to have breastmilk pumped ahead of time so that if something like this ever happens agian you can feed your baby prepared breastmilk, before contamination, giving your body enough time to excrete any negative substance acquired.

KrYstaL - January 12th, 2006 7:20 AM

my cousin used to smoke all the time and breastfeed and her daughter is fine. I, myself would never do it, but hey not everyone is the same

me - January 16th, 2006 6:50 PM

DONT BE ASHAMED! Just don't do it again. I smoke all the time. It's NOT tobacco.

febbaby - January 18th, 2006 8:10 PM

I am trying not to be judgmental as I read these posts. I just want to add that responsible parenting comes from making choices that we wish our own children will make in the future. I am a teacher, and I can see how students think its "ok" to smoke pot if mom smokes. This can be a dangerous path to take. Please consider your decisions.

AutumnsMommy - January 19th, 2006 12:02 PM

I honestly don't think it should be a big deal...I quit smoking after high school, but I did quite a bit of research on it as my husband is currently in prison for selling it. I don't condone it at all, but while there isn't a lot of research on BF'ing and smoking pot, almost all the other research I've done shows that it's no worse than drinking alcohol. (except alcohol is legal) was it really strong stuff, or just shwag? Well, regardless, I wouldn't worry...just don't do it again! :-)

jglover - January 30th, 2006 9:15 AM

i too have tried to continue my old habits but with much guilt and regret i only smoked for 2 days once a day before i panicked my milk supply dropped dramatically from 8 ounces to 2 so now i'm very worried and i dont know what to do to get my supply back if any have any advice on that part please let a worried guit-ridden new mom know.

Schmookie - February 5th, 2006 10:07 AM

You and your babies will be alright. All of you. According to the scientific community, 4 hits or 2 days isn't much. The studies were done on HEAVY smokers - more than 14 times per week. There were no measurable differences with occassional smokers vs non-smokers. Remeber, most of the studies aren't conclusive, yet, just suggestive. I would think that the stress due to your feeling so guilty is what might be lowering your milk supply. If you weren't such good mothers, you wouldn't be fretting over this so much :-) To increase your milk supply, you might want to try meditation, yoga, and Mother's Milk Tea (found in health food stores). This tea is a steeped in traditional medicine and works wonders. As for the 4 hits getting into the milk supply, it's not significant enough to worry about.

If I smoke a joint one night (for the 1st time since pre-pregancy) while my 2 month old is at his grandma's, how long to pump & dump to get the THC out of my system before nursing the baby again?

jglover - February 12th, 2006 2:01 AM

well too have smoked like i said before, that was two weeks ago and i've finally gotten my supply up but by any smoking standards it stays injyour system for a while even longer depending on your weight, my advice is just to drink plenty of water flushes it out faster pump and dump for like a day if you want than just go back to feeding him.(*substitute with formula ) he'll be fine but i myself want to smoke again but i just feel so guilty and i've just decidedto wait till i'm not breastfeeding anymore(5 more months to go) but hopefully by then the urges will just go away. good luck.
