hi Wailing... I don't think it's mastitis - the breast itself isn't swollen or red, and I don't have fever, chills, etc. I think it's from the compression on the areola/nipple. The nipple is sore - I've had wounds on both nipples for weeks. The baby's latch is still somehow not right (and the lactation consultants at the hospital sort of threw up their hands last time I was in there)... it looks like he's on there right, but I'm still getting "creasing" on the nipple, which I think is contributing to the wounds not healing. Sigh... I've been struggling with this for 11 weeks now. I thought it was getting better when I starting taking the baby off the nipples sooner (after 11-15 minutes, vs 20-25) but it's depressing me that it seems to be getting worse! And now to add to the problems, the baby has been refusing to take a bottle of expressed milk. Aaak... re: measuring for nipple shield, on the Medela site it says that the nipple shouldn't touch the sides of the shield when you pump, but mine just seemed to expand and touch it when I got the bigger size.
