Hey Ya'll. I had an unplanned c-section a week ago. And I was laboring for about 8 hours beforehand, but my girl was too big to turn the right way (she was transverse) and we had to do a c-section. I had the epidural a couple hours before this was decided because the back labor was absolute hell. Right before they wheeled me into the OR, they gave me another dose of the epidural, but it didn't work the way they wanted. I couldn't feel my contractions or my legs, but I could feel my bladder (the catheter, ouch!), so once in the OR they gave me a spinal block in addition to the fresh dose of epidural. I couldn't feel anything from my boobs down. It took me a while to recover from all that, and once we got home a couple days later, I started noticing this weird pain in my back. A dull throbbing kind of pain in the dead center of my back. Sometimes it would radiate out to my sides or my arm, but it would only last a couple seconds then it would be gone. I haven't had it lately. Yesterday was pain free and today has been so far too. But has anyone else had or heard of this kind of pain? Could the epi or the spinal block caused it?

It could be a few things but you should talk to your doctor about it. Mostly what comes to mind is some nerves got damaged during the surgery and you will just need to give it some time to heal. The pain in your back could also be an indication of a bladder infection. It is common for the pain to from those radiate into your kidney area or what feels like the center of your back. This could have been caused by the catheter. Drink lots of water and if it keeps up go get it checked out. If it is nerves they often heal up. My friend had no sensation of having to pee for 3 months following her section due to nerve damage -- but then she was fine. Also the radiating pains can still be trapped gas from your surgery. That can often be in your shoulders, back, and cause that sensation of radiating down your arms. Anyway, lots of ideas but I have no idea which is causing it. Congrats on your new arrival!! Feel better soon!

I'll keep an eye on it, thanks, olivia. I have a doc appt early next week, so I'll mention it then if I'm still having problems. Luckily I do feel it when I need to pee, it just takes a bit longer than it did before everything for me to feel it.

congrats piratesmermaid,i had a c section a week ago 2m and im still getting funny sensations,i had spinal block and epi ,i had trapped wind under my brestbone and pain in my arm shoulder and back at one point it was so bad in the hoapital in my chest that i thought i was having a heart attack,i made such a fuss and drama that they put me on an heart thing, why dont they tell you that u could suffer from awful gas and trapped wind,i was panicking bec i had a pregnancy related liver problem that came 3 weeks b4 and that was why i had my section 2 weeks early [had planned for normal delivery and i had been so stressed out but ive still got the dull throb like uve got and also a funny numb patch on my leg that the midwife said could be due to the epi spinal,he put it in wrongly at 1st and i had this shooting pain down one leg,i think the effects can last a couple of weeks,i cant believe i gave birth a week ago 2m feels like yesterday, how did u find ur op,i only had the epi with my section ten years and didnt get the gas or the pain but sure got it this time,in the morn after one of the midwives empty the cathether bag but didnt put a new one in i woke up in a pool of urine which was so yuck and one of those huge maternity pads between my legs, but i would say the epi spinal def cause your pain, mine is high up near my shoulder,

shelly, that's aweful that they forgot to replace your catheter bag!! Luckily all my nurses were really great. And the nursenesthitist (sp?) was really great to, I didn't even feel her put in my epidural, same with the anesth., didn't feel them put in my spinal block either. Apparently I reacted strongly to the epidural though, because everyone kept saying how floppy I was and I couldn't sit up to get my spinal, I had to lay down and the nurses had to move me into a proper position. After my c section I was so ill. I was dizzy and I kept puking for the rest of the day and night. It was around lunchtime the following day that I started coming around really and actually realized I had a daughter!

Hi i had a repeat c-section 4mos ago and you can see a big spot where they put the spinal in at and sometimes it itches real bad and sometimes my back hurts around that area,im not sure what the cause is but it is still there.

yes its major abdominal surgery, thats rotten that u fel so out of it afterwoods,i couldnt properly hold my baby till the next eve when the numbness had worn off,its a horrible feeling and takes a good while i think for all the anathesia to completly go from ur system ,ive got a numb spot where my scar is but i had a numb spot from my c section ten years ago when i had my first son i dont think it will ever go,i hate having to lift my belly up to check the scar yuck, how long did they make u wait before u could have a shower,i had wait 3 days, one of the side effects that they told me about was itching afterwoods rhonda u sound like u had strong reaction piratesmermaid but at least u idnt feel the epi going in that was the worst bit for me i felt like a corkscrew was going into my back, the recovery time so long with c sect,i havnt even been out of the house yet, have u got dull abdominal pain where the scar site is too, my milk had come in im bottle feed and my boobs slowley going back to normal but ive got a lump in one of them that the midwife said could be a milk duct but to keep an eye on it,my back not as back today, how are u feeling,

my back is doing okay today, now it just hurts when i breastfeed since i slump over slightly (i'm looking for a good nursing pillow to help with that). ....... i had to wait two days for my first shower though that first one was hot water only, no soap until the staples were removed the following morning. ..... i had this weird burning sensation just above my incision early this morning, i'm assuming it came from my internal incision. the pain is gone now though.

I'm so relieved to find this discussion. I had a planned C-section almost two weeks ago and have been troubled by back pain at the injection site ever since. Earlier on, I was having shooting pain that was relatively severe -- much worse than the incision pain. Thankfully, that has appeared to subside and I'm now just having a general ache. I was really worried -- I even feared I was going to be paralyzed. (Ok, maybe I was a bit hormonal!) But it's scary when something is going on with your spine. It sounds like everyone here, found it to be a temporary problem right? I can stand anything for awhile, but I would hate for this to be my life. I don't know if I'd ever be able to lift my older son -- or my baby once he gets just a little bigger.

piratesmermaid - August 29th, 2006 3:26 PM

Temporary problem, yes. By the very first part of August the pain and weird feelings in my back were gone and they haven't returned.
