My doctor said she will give me an epideral for the c-section, then let me see the baby, then put me to sleep. I was wondering can"t I stay awake for the hysterectomy? Can my husband stay with me for both? This is my first baby, I was told I have ovarian cancer and it spread. I want to breastfeed the baby before I get put to sleep because the doctor said they will feed the baby before I get out of surgery. I am afraid if I don"t breastfeed the baby will not want to when I try when I wake up.

Hi. With my first baby I ended up with a general anesthesia for the c-section. When I came around several hours later I breastfed him. He was a barracuda and had absolutely no problems nursing. When I had my hysterectomy I was asleep (not done at the c-section though) because they had to cut my bladder away from my uterus (c-section scar tissue) and remove the ovaries, etc. I think your baby will be just fine with nursing after you are in recovery. One caveat though, since my baby also got the general anesthetic he was a bit pukey for the first 48 hours...made me vomit too. If you get the general after the baby is out he/she will probably be ready to go. May I extend my best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and delivery and a successful treatment of your cancer. You have so much on your plate right now and I am praying for you.

I doubt they will let your dh stay for the hysterectomy. I had my 3rd c-section under general anesthesia (no hysterectomy, just a c-section and tubal ligation) and dh wasn't even allowed in for that. Your breastfeeding could still be ok even if you have to wait to feed. With my boys it was over 7 hours until I got a chance to breastfeed. With my daughter... I tried just a few hours after her birth, but she was in NICU and my IV and her wires were crossing, not to mention she was being IV fed and had no desire to eat at all... I actually didn't get to truly feed her until day 3 when she came out of NICU and off of being IV fed... but the good news is she took to it very well after all of that!! I hope that everything goes really well for you... best wishes!!!! When are you due?

This is a questions for greenterry, I realise that it has been sometime but can you tell me more about your experience. I believe I am in the same situation but my Dr. does not want to do the hysterectomy at the time of c-section. I am due Feb. 18, 09. Says the insurance co will not pay as it is not covered. Were you diagnosed before the pregnancy? How did you find out? Did you have any symptoms? How was the surgery? Did your Dr. listen to you? How is the baby and yourself now? Anything more you can tell me I would really appreciate.
