hi all, just wondering how long after a c section before you are up and about. able to go to dinner, do some light shopping, walks etc....

About 6 days (4 of which are in the hospital) I was walking around the block. They gave me the okay to drive after my 6 week appointment. Dinner? I haven't been able to go to dinner since my dd was born in August.....

I recommend getting up and walking as soon as you can. Even in the hospital...take laps around the floor. It will help your healing go so much faster. Of course dont over do it, Im not talking miles or anything, just try to get up every two hours or so. It really helped me feel better faster. I went home after only one day in the hospital, and out shopping one week later (but most of that was due to a snow storm).

I wasn't up for shopping or anything that required standing for more then 5 minutes until about 2 weeks after. But I do agree that you should get up and move around for a minute or so.

I was ok after about a week and half total. I got up and moved in the hospital immediately and that helps. But on days I did to much walking, my body would let me know. Incision became very sore.

Hi I had my c-section 2 weeks and 2 days ago and I'm fine! I was pretty sore while in the hospital and I did take the pain medication that they gave me. Once I got home I took motrin for a day or so but I don't need anything now. I did do a little shopping yesterday. My back still hurts from the epidural so I go on short trips for now. Best of luck to you!!

Well... - March 17th, 2006 2:42 AM

I took about a month to really get going and I definately took longer than my vaginal birth friends. My best friend delivered at 1 in the afternoon, left the hospital 22 hours later and stopped at the Mall on her way home! I took slow short walks to my mailbox and back the first few days, then I had my MIL take me to the grocery store at 1 1/2 weeks and by the third aisle I was in excruciating pain. I waited a couple more weeks and was able to do a short grocery trip. After that I could do a few more things everyday. By 1 month I was almost okay, but if I overdid anything I felt incisional pain and extreme fatigue. By 2 months the scar was more a discomfort than actual pain. To this day, however, my clothes can't be tight on my scar nor can I feel my skin over it. It has been a year.

I was up and outside the hospital within 18 hours (needed a ciggie) I was driving within 2 weeks (doctor didn't say I could, but I fely great, and had no problems)....going out for dinner....I was doing after 3 weeks (would have done it sooner, but daughter was in neonatal for 2 weeks after birth)
This was my 4th baby, and 1st c-section, and apart from the pain directly afterwards, which was bareable because of morphine drip, it was no way near as painful as what I had read.....I was refusing pain meds after 3 days, didn't need them......I felt great, and have healed great so far. had daughter just over 5 weeks ago......so please dont be scared, or think you cant, go with what your body says....you know what you can and cant do, as everyone is different.

I had one vaginal birth (a breeze!) and one c-section that was planned due to breech baby. I must say that I could do everything within a day or two after my vaginal birth except have sex. It took about 2-3 weeks before I felt like going out to dinner or things that took longer than an hour with my c-section. I felt pretty good with both, but I did need pain meds after my c-section and didn't even need a motrin after my vaginal. They make you walk as soon as possible after a surgical birth so you don't form blood clots and gas, but it doesn't mean it feels good at all! I walked the halls of the hospital the next day and the day after, but when I did so when a pain med was wearing off it was much more painful than about an hour after one. I took it easy for the first 2 weeks and slowly added activities. Some women do so sooner, and many much later. It depends on the individual. Best of luck.

I was about 10 days before almost back to normal routine. In the hospital I was up around the 12 hour mark and taking very small strolls. I over did it though as I was feeling great and started bleeding vaginally again around the 2 week mark. Although you may feel great- take it easy. A c-section is major surgery and nothing to take lightly, as I learned the hard way. Good luck and rest!

Hi g. It took me one week to get back to my normal routine. When you've got a DH and other kids you really have no choice, but I would have felt ok to do things anyway I think. I felt really good. It was my first c section and definately not as bad as what I thought it would be. Not nice but better than I anticipated. Everyone is different with their recoveries though. For me it was not a drama at all.
